Download or read book Neural Interfacing written by Thomas D. Coates,Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 50 years there has been an explosion of interest in the development of technologies whose end goal is to connect the human brain and/or nervous system directly to computers. Once the subject of science fiction, the technologies necessary to accomplish this goal are rapidly becoming reality. In laboratories around the globe, research is being undertaken to restore function to the physically disabled, to replace areas of the brain damaged by disease or trauma and to augment human abilities. Building neural interfaces and neuro-prosthetics relies on a diverse array of disciplines such as neuroscience, engineering, medicine and microfabrication just to name a few. This book presents a short history of neural interfacing (N.I.) research and introduces the reader to some of the current efforts to develop neural prostheses. The book is intended as an introduction for the college freshman or others wishing to learn more about the field. A resource guide is included for students along with a list of laboratories conducting N.I. research and universities with N.I. related tracks of study. Table of Contents: Neural Interfaces Past and Present / Current Neuroprosthesis Research / Conclusion / Resources for Students

Book Synopsis The Nano-Micro Interface by : Marcel Van de Voorde
Download or read book The Nano-Micro Interface written by Marcel Van de Voorde and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling the properties of materials by modifying their composition and by manipulating the arrangement of atoms and molecules is a dream that can be achieved by nanotechnology. As one of the fastest developing and innovative -- as well as well-funded -- fields in science, nanotechnology has already significantly changed the research landscape in chemistry, materials science, and physics, with numerous applications in consumer products, such as sunscreens and water-repellent clothes. It is also thanks to this multidisciplinary field that flat panel displays, highly efficient solar cells, and new biological imaging techniques have become reality. This second, enlarged edition has been fully updated to address the rapid progress made within this field in recent years. Internationally recognized experts provide comprehensive, first-hand information, resulting in an overview of the entire nano-micro world. In so doing, they cover aspects of funding and commercialization, the manufacture and future applications of nanomaterials, the fundamentals of nanostructures leading to macroscale objects as well as the ongoing miniaturization toward the nanoscale domain. Along the way, the authors explain the effects occurring at the nanoscale and the nanotechnological characterization techniques. An additional topic on the role of nanotechnology in energy and mobility covers the challenge of developing materials and devices, such as electrodes and membrane materials for fuel cells and catalysts for sustainable transportation. Also new to this edition are the latest figures for funding, investments, and commercialization prospects, as well as recent research programs and organizations.

Book Synopsis Microcomputers and Laboratory Instrumentation by : David J. Malcolme-Lawes
Download or read book Microcomputers and Laboratory Instrumentation written by David J. Malcolme-Lawes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The invention of the microcomputer in the mid-1970s and its subsequent low-cost proliferation has opened up a new world for the laboratory scientist. Tedious data collection can now be automated relatively cheaply and with an enormous increase in reliability. New techniques of measurement are accessible with the "intelligent" instrumentation made possible by these programmable devices, and the ease of use of even standard measurement techniques may be improved by the data processing capabilities of the humblest micro. The latest items of commercial laboratory instrumentation are invariably "computer controlled", although this is more likely to mean that a microprocessor is involved than that a versatile microcomputer is provided along with the instrument. It is clear that all scientists of the future will need some knowledge of computers, if only to aid them in mastering the button pushing associated with gleaming new instruments. However, to be able to exploit this newly accessible computing power to the full the practising laboratory scientist must gain sufficient understanding to utilise the communication channels between apparatus on the laboratory bench and program within the computer. This book attempts to provide an introduction to those communication channels in a manner which is understandable for scientists who do not specialise in electronics or computers.

Book Synopsis Interface Oral Health Science 2011 by : Keiichi Sasaki
Download or read book Interface Oral Health Science 2011 written by Keiichi Sasaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface oral health science was founded on the concept that healthy oral function is maintained by biological and biomechanical harmony between three systems: oral tissues, parasitic oral microorganisms, and biomaterials. On that basis, dental caries, periodontal disease, and temporomandibular joint disorders may be regarded as interface disorders that result from a disruption in the intact interface of these systems. Interface oral health science encompasses the fields of dentistry and dental medicine, but also extends to general medicine, agriculture, biomaterials science, bioengineering, and pharmacology. This book is a compendium of the research presented at symposiums held in 2011 by the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry and by the Forsyth Institute. Its publication is intended provide further impetus for the progress of oral science and health, pointing the way for dental research for future generations.
