Book Synopsis Capitalism, Class and Revolution in Peru, 1980-2016 by : Jan Lust
Download or read book Capitalism, Class and Revolution in Peru, 1980-2016 written by Jan Lust and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an analysis of political, economic, and social development in Peru in the years between 1980 and 2016, this book explores the failure of the socialist Left to realize its project of revolutionary social transformation. Based on extensive interviews with leading cadres in the struggle for revolutionary change and a profound review of documents from the principal socialist organizations of the 1980s and 1990s, the volume reveals that the socialist Left did not fully comprehend the deep political and social implications of changes to the country’s class structures. As such, the Left failed to develop and implement adequate strategic and tactical responses to the processes that eroded its political and social bases in the 1980s and 1990s, ultimately leading to its loss of social and political power. Lust concludes that the continued political and organizational agony of the Peruvian socialist Left and the hegemony of neoliberalism in society is a product of the dialectical interplay between the objective and subjective conditions that determine Peruvian capitalist development.
Book Synopsis The Rise and Fall of the Peruvian Military Radicals 1968-1976 by : George D.E. Philip

This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip tackles the major problems posed by military radicalism in Peru between 1968 and 1976. He discusses the ideology of the military, the commitment of the officer corps to reform, the degree of reformism, and the limits of popular participation, and attempts to answer why it was possible for a radical military government to arise in Peru. The answers contribute not only to an understanding of modern Peru but also to the general study of the military in politics.

Book Synopsis Post-revolutionary Peru by : Stephen M. Gorman
Download or read book Post-revolutionary Peru written by Stephen M. Gorman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the nearly twelve years of military rule in Peru--between October 1968 and July 1980--are labelled a revolution, œso-called revolution, or simply a ‘military dictatorship’, one fact remains inescapable: the reforms and programs of the armed forces during that period profoundly altered Peruvian society. This book examines the social, political, and economic legacies of the military government and identifies major areas of tension that are likely to pose problems for the new civilian government. Following a review of the ideology, socio-economic goals, and political performance of the Institutional Revolution of the Armed Forces, the authors analyze the contemporary political economy of Peru and catalog the political and economic policy alternatives available to the Belaúnde regime in the next few years. They discuss the return to partisan politics in Peru, urban and rural conditions, and the way in which real political power has remained with the military forces, despite their surrender of formal authority. Subsequent chapters outline the IMF-imposed stabilization program, revealing its devastating effects on Lima's urban poor, and summarize recent Peruvian foreign policy. A final chapter draws on the prior discussion to present a critical analysis of the transitionary process from military to civilian rule in Peru.

Book Synopsis The Peculiar Revolution by : Carlos Aguirre
Download or read book The Peculiar Revolution written by Carlos Aguirre and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 3, 1968, a military junta led by General Juan Velasco Alvarado took over the government of Peru. In striking contrast to the right-wing, pro–United States/anti-Communist military dictatorships of that era, however, Velasco’s “Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces” set in motion a left-leaning nationalist project aimed at radically transforming Peruvian society by eliminating social injustice, breaking the cycle of foreign domination, redistributing land and wealth, and placing the destiny of Peruvians into their own hands. Although short-lived, the Velasco regime did indeed have a transformative effect on Peru, the meaning and legacy of which are still subjects of intense debate. The Peculiar Revolution revisits this fascinating and idiosyncratic period of Latin American history. The book is organized into three sections that examine the era’s cultural politics, including not just developments directed by the Velasco regime but also those that it engendered but did not necessarily control; its specific policies and key institutions; and the local and regional dimensions of the social reforms it promoted. In a series of innovative chapters written by both prominent and rising historians, this volume illuminates the cultural dimensions of the revolutionary project and its legacies, the impact of structural reforms at the local level (including previously understudied areas of the country such as Piura, Chimbote, and the Amazonia), and the effects of state policies on ordinary citizens and labor and peasant organizations.
Book Synopsis Continuity Despite Change by : Matthew E. Carnes
Download or read book Continuity Despite Change written by Matthew E. Carnes and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the dust settles on nearly three decades of economic reform in Latin America, one of the most fundamental economic policy areas has changed far less than expected: labor regulation. To date, Latin America's labor laws remain both rigidly protective and remarkably diverse. Continuity Despite Change develops a new theoretical framework for understanding labor laws and their change through time, beginning by conceptualizing labor laws as comprehensive systems or "regimes." In this context, Matthew Carnes demonstrates that the reform measures introduced in the 1980s and 1990s have only marginally modified the labor laws from decades earlier. To explain this continuity, he argues that labor law development is constrained by long-term economic conditions and labor market institutions. He points specifically to two key factors—the distribution of worker skill levels and the organizational capacity of workers. Carnes presents cross-national statistical evidence from the eighteen major Latin American economies to show that the theory holds for the decades from the 1980s to the 2000s, a period in which many countries grappled with proposed changes to their labor laws. He then offers theoretically grounded narratives to explain the different labor law configurations and reform paths of Chile, Peru, and Argentina. His findings push for a rethinking of the impact of globalization on labor regulation, as economic and political institutions governing labor have proven to be more resilient than earlier studies have suggested.
