This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, Peruvian Victor Raul Haya de la Torre (1895–1979) was one of Latin America's key revolutionary leaders, well known across national boundaries. Inigo Garcia-Bryce's biography of Haya chronicles his dramatic political odyssey as founder of the highly influential American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), as a political theorist whose philosophy shifted gradually from Marxism to democracy, and as a seasoned opposition figure repeatedly jailed and exiled by his own government. Garcia-Bryce spotlights Haya's devotion to forging populism as a political style applicable on both the left and the right, and to his vision of a pan-Latin American political movement. A great orator who addressed gatherings of thousands of Peruvians, Haya fired up the Aprismo movement, seeking to develop "Indo-America" by promoting the rights of Indigenous peoples as well as laborers and women. Steering his party toward the center of the political spectrum through most of the Cold War, Haya was elected president in 1962—but he was blocked from assuming office by the military, which played on his rumored homosexuality. Even so, Haya's insistence that political parties must cultivate Indigenous roots and oppose violence as a means of achieving political power has left a powerful legacy across Latin America.

Book Synopsis Gastropolitics and the Specter of Race by : María Elena García
Download or read book Gastropolitics and the Specter of Race written by María Elena García and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Peru has transformed from a war-torn country to a global high-end culinary destination. Connecting chefs, state agencies, global capital, and Indigenous producers, this “gastronomic revolution” makes powerful claims: food unites Peruvians, dissolves racial antagonisms, and fuels development. Gastropolitics and the Specter of Race critically evaluates these claims and tracks the emergence of Peruvian gastropolitics, a biopolitical and aesthetic set of practices that reinscribe dominant racial and gendered orders. Through critical readings of high-end menus and ethnographic analysis of culinary festivals, guinea pig production, and national-branding campaigns, this work explores the intersections of race, species, and capital to reveal links between gastronomy and violence in Peru.
Book Synopsis The United States and Peru by : Cynthia McClintock
Download or read book The United States and Peru written by Cynthia McClintock and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early 1990s were a critical turning point in the relationship between the United States and Peru, as historically contentious relations dramatically improved. During President Alber to Fujimori's rule, he sought to cooperate with the U.S. government on most issues, including security threats, free-market reform, and narcotics control. Fujimori's government did not meet international standards for democracy and human rights, but relations with the U.S. were more cooperative than they had been since the beginning of the Cold War. Why did the Clinton administration place a relatively low priority on democracy and human rights in Peru? The United States and Peru traces the changes in the relationship between the two countries from the 1980's through the 1990's, examining economic, political, and military issues. Attention is given to the problems of drug-trafficking, guerrillas, human-rights violations, and to the 1995 war between Peru and Ecuador and the U.S. role in the resolution of the conflict.
Download or read book To Be a Worker written by Jorge Parodi and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-06-19 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contemporary classic in Peru, where it was first published in 1986, this book explores changes in the political identity and economic strategies of the Peruvian working class in the 1970s and 1980s. Jorge Parodi uses a case study of Metal Empresa, a large factory in Lima, to trace the surge and decline of the labor movement in Peru--and in Latin America more generally--through the successes and frustrations of the members of a once-powerful union as they coped with the nation's deteriorating economic situation. By the early 1970s, Metal Empresa was the site of one of the most radical and aggressive unions in Peruvian industry. But as the decade drew to a close, political and economic crises soured the environment for trade unionism and rendered unions less able to produce palpable benefits for their members. Through in-depth, often poignant interviews, including an extensive oral history of one of the workers, Jesus Zuniga, Parodi shows how workers desperate to support themselves and their families were increasingly forced to seek opportunities outside the industrial sector. In the process, he shows, they began to question their very identities as workers.
