Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Peru IT can hardly be said that a town of a popula tion of three thousand six hundred and fifty-two souls, dating back but about twenty years to its first rude tenement and solitary family, can have any history. The events of any public interest are so few, and their importance so small, that no reasonable hepe can be entertained that their re cital will be any thing but a matter of indifi'enr ance to others than the present or former resi dents, or those connected with them by ties of consanguinity, or having an interest in its advance ment and prosperity. It is true that at some future time, the record may be useful to the historian, if it should be so fortunate as to survive. The statistics have been collected with care and con siderable labor, and are believed to be correct and reliable. Beyond this the writer claims no merit for the work. The anecdotes and events related. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peru of the Twentieth Century My anxiety is to awaken some interest among the thinkers in Great Britain, by showing to them - as far as my modest abilities will permit - some of the many diplomatic errors which our responsible rulers, of both political parties alike, have committed, and to assist in urging the demand that these errors be no longer perpetuated. Book Synopsis Peruvian Antiquities (Classic Reprint) by : Mariano Edward Rivero
Download or read book Peruvian Antiquities (Classic Reprint) written by Mariano Edward Rivero and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peruvian Antiquities In the prosecution of researches made in the preparation of a work on the antiquities of America generally, it became necessary to examine the book of which a translation is here presented to the reader. On its perusal, it was found to contain, with much that has already been placed in the hands of the English reader, by Mr. Prescott, in his History of the Conquest of Peru, much also that did not fall within the design of his admirable work, and is not generally accessible in our language. The book possessed also additional interest from the fact that it was, in part at least, the production of a native Peruvian of Spanish origin, who, it is believed, had no native predecessor in any similar work but Garcilasso de la Vega, who published the first part of his Commentaries in 1609, and finished the latter in 1616. We have then here the last account of Peru by a native, at a date as late as 1851; and a more particular description of its most ancient architectural remains than is to be found elsewhere. These circumstances led the translator to think that the book would possess an interest for his countrymen, and induced him to devote such leisure as he could snatch from more serious employments to the task of clothing the original in an English dress. Download or read book The Treasure of the Incas written by G. A. Henty and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treasure of the Incas: A Story of Adventure in Peru Two men were sitting in the smoking-room of a London club. The room was almost empty, and as they occupied arm-chairs in one corner of it, they were able to talk freely without fear of being overhead. One of them was a man of sixty, the other some five or six and twenty. "I must do something," the younger man said, "for I have been kicking my heels about London since my ship was paid off two years ago. At first, of course, it didn't matter, for I have enough to live upon; but recently I have been fool enough to fall in love with a girl whose parents would never dream of allowing her to marry a half-pay lieutenant of the navy with no chance in the world of getting employed again, for I have no interest whatever." "It is an awkward case certainly, Prendergast," the other said; "and upon my word, though I sympathize with you, I cannot blame Fortescue. He is not what you might call a genial man, but there is no doubt that he was a splendid lawyer and a wonderful worker. For ten years he earned more than any man at the bar. I know that he was twice offered the solicitor-generalship, but as he was making two or three times the official salary, he would not take it. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peru Its Story, People and Religion The spiritual needs of Latin America, that continent of paganized Christianity and of ecclesiastical tyranny, have been strangely overlooked by the various missionary societies of Protestant Europe and Anglo-Teutonic America. That our British organizations have done comparatively little work in this field is perhaps not surprising when we remember the share of the White Man's burden which they have to bear in the non-Christian sections of the many British dependencies in other continents, and in those countries with which we are so closely connected by ties of commerce. To bring nations and peoples into contact, to cause them to know and appreciate one another, is to favor the cause of civilization, by promoting their intellectual, commercial and social advancement. We hope that the impartiality and sincerity of purpose which we bring to this task, may merit the benevolent attention of our rea ders, and their forbearance for involuntary errors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old and the New Peru: A Story of the Ancient Inheritance and the Modern Growth and Enterprise of a Great Nation In the preparation of this work, I found that the knowledge I had previously gained through close association with the people of Latin America during more than fifteen years' journeying in these countries was of the greatest advantage. Travelling in Peru was more like Visiting among friends than studying the manners and customs of a foreign people, and the uniform kindness and hospitality everywhere Shown me made my experience in this beautiful land one of constant pleasure and of enduring memory. I sincerely appre ciate the great assistance rendered me in securing information from government sources, from the public libraries and from many kind friends in every part of Peru, and I take this opportunity of expressing my thanks, from my heart. It is impossible to live in Peru without learning to love the country and its people, and while I have tried to allow no partiality to influence my judgment in writing this book, I cannot do otherwise than present to the reader what I found most interesting in my own study of the Old and the New Peru.
