Book Synopsis The Report: Peru 2014 by : Oxford Business Group
Download or read book The Report: Peru 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade Peru has seen a period of transformative growth, effectively positioning it as one of the leading economic performers in Latin America. Posting growth rates in excess of 6% from 2010-12, the economy expanded by a further 5.1% in the first half of 2013. A major metals and minerals exporter with a burgeoning agricultural sector, Peru’s rapid economic growth has been the result of elevated global demand for commodities and key exports, as well as prudent fiscal planning and the expansion of non-primary sectors. With an investor-friendly legal framework, Peru has become a prime destination for foreign direct investment and was recently ranked the second-best country for doing business in Latin America by the World Bank. Despite ongoing social conflict related to extractive industries and a sizeable infrastructure gap, Peru’s stable macroeconomic environment and its efforts to diversify and guard against price volatility should ensure continued growth for this Andean economy.

Download or read book Peru written by John Crabtree and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While leftist governments have been elected across Latin America, this ‘Pink Tide’ has so far failed to reach Peru. Instead, the corporate elite remains firmly entrenched, and the left continues to be marginalised. Peru therefore represents a particularly stark example of ‘state capture’, in which an extreme concentration of wealth in the hands of a few corporations and pro-market technocrats has resulted in a monopoly on political power. Post the 2016 elections, John Crabtree and Francisco Durand look at the ways in which these elites have been able to consolidate their position at the expense of genuine democracy, with a particular focus on the role of mining and other extractive industries, where extensive privatization and deregulation has contributed to extreme disparities in wealth and power. In the process, Crabtree and Durand provide a unique case study of state development, by revealing the mechanisms used by elites to dominate political discussion and marginalize their opponents, as well as the role played by external actors such as international financial institutions and foreign investors. The significance of Crabtree’s findings therefore extends far beyond Peru, and illuminates the wider issue of why mineral-rich countries so often struggle to attain meaningful democracy.

Book Synopsis From the Plate to Gastro-Politics by : Raúl Matta
Download or read book From the Plate to Gastro-Politics written by Raúl Matta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an interdisciplinary examination of Peruvian cuisine’s shift from a culinary to a political object and the making of Peru as a food nation on the global stage. It focuses on the contexts, processes and protagonists that have endowed the country’s cuisine with new meaning, new coherence and prominence, and with the ability to communicate what was important for Peruvians after decades of political violence and economic decline. This work unfolds central processes of the culinary project ranging from the emergence of gastronomy, to the refiguring of indigenous people as producers, to the use of cultural identity as an authenticating force. From the Plate to Gastro-Politics offers a critical reading of what has been called a “gastronomic revolution”, highlighting the ways in which claims to national unity and social reconciliation smooth over ongoing inequalities. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of food studies, cultural anthropology, heritage studies and Latin American studies.
