Sa prise en charge fait partie intégrante de la pratique orthophonique depuis ses débuts et revêt de nombreux aspects. Les troubles du langage oral peuvent être développementaux (trouble du développement du langage, dyspraxie) ou acquis (aphasie, dysarthrie, etc.), voire consécutifs à diverses pathologies et pouvant souvent nécessiter un suivi spécifique (trouble du spectre de l'autisme -TSA-, surdité, maladie génétique, pathologie neurologique ou neurodégénérative, etc.). Les troubles du langage oral touchent tous les âges de la vie, nécessitant parfois un suivi ou accompagnement, souvent long, en fonction des besoins du patient. En effet, l'atteinte du langage oral affecte la communication dans sa globalité et par conséquent le parcours de vie. Au coeur de la pratique orthophonique en matière d'évaluation et de prise en soins, mais aussi des conséquences sur le patient, l'atteinte du langage oral et de la communication suscite une multitude de recherches scientifiques dont le praticien sait se saisir pour rendre sa prise en charge probante dans une démarche qui se veut la plus proche de l'« Evidence-based practice » (EBP). Les 23èmes Rencontres Internationales d'Orthophonie de décembre 2023 ont pour thématique le « langage oral ». Les travaux présentés se focalisent sur les dernières actualités concernant ces troubles en matière de profils sémiologiques, de diagnostics orthophoniques, ainsi que des nouvelles approches thérapeutiques aussi bien chez l'enfant, l'adolescent et l'adulte, dans le cadre de troubles neurodéveloppementaux mais également dans les troubles acquis du langage. La première journée débute par la présentation du développement du langage oral et des caractéristiques cliniques des troubles neurodéveloppementaux de la communication orale. Les interventions exposent l'actualité terminologique mais également l'effet des écrans sur le développement précoce du langage et l'actualité sur les effets du trouble développemental du langage à l'âge adulte. La deuxième partie de la journée traite de l'évaluation à la prise en charge orthophonique des troubles neurodéveloppementaux du langage oral. Ces aspects sont développés chez l'enfant et l'adolescent, à travers la présentation de nouvelles approches comme l'évaluation dynamique, l'évaluation de l'enfant bilingue et les prises en soins dans le cadre d'enfants rencontrant des difficultés en résolution de problème. Cette première journée se consacre aussi aux nouvelles approches thérapeutiques utilisant la stimulation des habiletés langagières et l'éveil à l'écrit par la lecture interactive ou encore l'utilisation du dialogue devant une image animée avec des enfants souffrant de TSA. La première partie de la deuxième journée traite de l'évaluation des troubles du langage oral dans les pathologies acquises, notamment dans le cadre de l'anomie (dans le cadre de la maladie d'Alzheimer, mais aussi des populations bilingues). La deuxième partie de la journée se consacre à la présentation de travaux sur l'efficacité des réhabilitations des troubles du langage oral, aussi bien sur les troubles neurodéveloppementaux que dans les pathologies acquises. Les intervenants proviennent d'univers différents et complémentaires puisqu'il s'agit d'orthophonistes cliniciens (cliniciens, docteurs, doctorants) mais aussi de chercheurs (neuropsychologues, maîtres de conférences, maîtres d'enseignement et de recherche, professeurs) provenant de divers horizons francophones (Belgique, Canada, France, Liban, Suisse).
