For anyone who hopes to influence what people do or what they buy, Jim's book is required reading." —Keith Reinhard, chairman emeritus of DDB Worldwide and a member of the Advertising Hall of Fame 7 Secrets of Persuasion is the first book to take the latest scientific insights about the mind and apply them to the art of persuasion. It directly translates the revolution in neuroscience that has occurred over the last 40 years into practical new techniques for effective persuasion. Whether your goal is to persuade one person--a husband, child, or boss--or the millions who might purchase an Apple Watch or a Budweiser, 7 Secrets of Persuasion will show you how to: Unearth the motivation that actually changes a behavior like smoking, voting, or buying, even though people don't know why they do what they do. Tap into the mental process that gives religious symbols, political symbols, and commercial logos their power. Make a promise that is delayed, uncertain, and rational more compelling by making it immediate, certain, and emotional. Transform your candidate, service, or product into the one people want by utilizing what psychologists call the "fundamental attribution error."

Book excerpt: For many people the term "persuasion," is synonymous with influencing or, even worse, selling. Often, especially for those of us in the military or government, the very thought is anathema to our concept of leadership and authority. Nevertheless, today's leaders should realize the need for persuasion. In one manner or another, leaders depend on persuasive rhetoric to convince, encourage, and energize superiors, peers, and subordinates. Persuasive argument is a vital aspect of strategic leadership. Any leader faced with the inherent complexities of leading his or her organization through transformational change must be capable of persuading. It has an important role in rallying others to support difficult or potentially controversial decisions. Persuasion is one of many leadership tools that most senior leaders use successfully although perhaps unknowingly. Leaders must use persuasive arguments, which as Majone expresses, "may be more or less technical, more or less sophisticated, but they must persuade if they are to be taken seriously in the Forum of public deliberation." (p. 7). This paper addresses this connection between persuasion and leadership in its first section. Also discussed in this section are persuasion's three cornerstone activities. The latter section, using the example of two different Army Chief of Staffs, discusses how persuasive argument supported or might have supported their efforts as transformational leaders.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller “A powerful coming-of-age story that looks at ambition, friendship, identity, desire, and power from the much-needed female lens." —Bustle “Ultra-readable.” —Vogue From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Interestings, comes an electric novel not just about who we want to be with, but who we want to be. To be admired by someone we admire—we all yearn for this: the private, electrifying pleasure of being singled out by someone of esteem. But sometimes it can also mean entry to a new kind of life, a bigger world. Greer Kadetsky is a shy college freshman when she meets the woman she hopes will change her life. Faith Frank, dazzlingly persuasive and elegant at sixty-three, has been a central pillar of the women’s movement for decades, a figure who inspires others to influence the world. Upon hearing Faith speak for the first time, Greer—madly in love with her boyfriend, Cory, but still full of longing for an ambition that she can’t quite place—feels her inner world light up. And then, astonishingly, Faith invites Greer to make something out of that sense of purpose, leading Greer down the most exciting path of her life as it winds toward and away from her meant-to-be love story with Cory and the future she’d always imagined. Charming and wise, knowing and witty, Meg Wolitzer delivers a novel about power and influence, ego and loyalty, womanhood and ambition. At its heart, The Female Persuasion is about the flame we all believe is flickering inside of us, waiting to be seen and fanned by the right person at the right time. It’s a story about the people who guide and the people who follow (and how those roles evolve over time), and the desire within all of us to be pulled into the light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold re-examination of how political attitudes change in response to information. Many mistakenly believe that it is fruitless to try to persuade those who disagree with them about politics. However, Persuasion in Parallel shows that individuals do, in fact, change their minds in response to information, with partisans on either side of the political aisle updating their views roughly in parallel. This book challenges the dominant view that persuasive information can often backfire because people are supposedly motivated to reason against information they dislike. Drawing on evidence from a series of randomized controlled trials, the book shows that the backfire response is rare to nonexistent. Instead, it shows that most everyone updates in the direction of information, at least a little bit. The political upshot of this work is that the other side is not lost. Even messages we don't like can move us in the right direction.
