Book Synopsis Understanding Deviance by : Tammy L. Anderson
Download or read book Understanding Deviance written by Tammy L. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of 48 reprinted and completely original articles, Tammy Anderson gives her fellow instructors of undergraduate deviance a refreshing way to energize and revitalize their courses. [36 are reprints; 12 are original to this text/anthology] First, in 12 separate sections, she presents a wide range of deviant behaviors, traits, and conditions including: underage drinking and drunk driving, doping in elite sports, gang behavior, community crime, juvenile delinquency, hate crime, prison violence and transgendered prisoners, mental illness, drug-using women and domestic violence, obesity, tattooing, sexual fetishes, prostitution, drug epidemics, viral pandemics, crime control strategies and racial inequality, gay neighborhoods, HIV and bugchasers, and (lastly) youth, multicultural identity and music scenes. Second, her pairing of "classic" and "contemporary" viewpoints about deviance and social control not only "connects" important literatures of the past to today’s (student) readers, her "connections framework" also helps all of us see social life and social processes more clearly when alternative meanings are accorded to similar forms of deviant behavior. We also learn how to appreciate and interact with those who see things differently from ourselves. This may better equip us to reach common goals in an increasingly diverse and ever-changing world. Third, a major teaching goal of Anderson’s anthology is to sharpen students’ critical thinking skills by forcing them to look at how a deviant behavior, trait or condition, can be viewed from opposing or alternative perspectives. By learning to see deviance from multiple perspectives, students will better understand their own and other’s behavior and experiences and be able to anticipate future trends. Balancing multiple perspectives may also assist students in their practical work in social service, criminal justice and other agencies and institutions that deal with populations considered "deviant" in one way or another.

Derived from the same author team’s successful text/reader version, this concise and student-friendly resource uses sociological theories to illuminate a variety of issues related to deviant behavior and societal reactions to deviance. The authors briefly explain the development of major sociological theoretical perspectives and use current research and examples to demonstrate how those theories are used to think about and study the causes of deviant behavior and the reactions to it. Focusing on the application—rather than just the understanding—of theory, the Second Edition offers a practical and fascinating exploration of deviance in our society.

Book Synopsis Marginality and Modernity by : Mauro Giardiello
Download or read book Marginality and Modernity written by Mauro Giardiello and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the major stages in the evolution of the sociological concept of marginality, highlighting in particular the contribution made by Gino Germani. Its purpose is to analyse, starting with the sociological theory of the early 1960s, the progressive maturation of the scientific status of the concept of marginality, and to test the theoretical premise that gave rise to Germani's theory of marginality. The author begins by examining the contribution of the Chicago School. He explores the complex relationship between the theory of marginality and modernization by analysing North American theses and the criticisms mainly generated in Latin America. The goal is to reconstruct Germani's theoretical model of marginality, addressing its application to contemporary social and economic conditions.Giardiello's analysis is intertwined with two themes that are central to Germani's thought about marginality. The first concerns the origin of the concept of social exclusion within sociological thought. The second shows how marginality is clearly a phenomenology connected to the contradictions of modernity. Germani's paradigm of marginality enables the social scientist to resolve the contradictions between the analytical perspectives that deal with marginality in an objective way and the one that observes it subjectively.
Book Synopsis Marginality, Power and Social Structure by : Rutledge M. Dennis
Download or read book Marginality, Power and Social Structure written by Rutledge M. Dennis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-04-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book are intended to be a much-needed corrective to the literature on marginality. In the recent past, and at present, the concept of marginality has been used with little specificity, and when used with specificity, the delineation of the complex dimensions of the term has been less than satisfactory. To illustrate the many ways in which marginality exists and operates in many societies Rutledge Dennis has assembled a rich array of articles designed to highlight the history and evolution of the concept of marginality along with the theorists, issues and situations which prompted the use of the term, and the issues for which the term is applicable today. The very title of the volume comes into play here because, though many of the early marginality theorists took the term into the realm of psychology, the contributors to this volume who discussed the theory highlighted the social structural foundation of marginality. Dennis sought a marriage of theory and research while assembling the articles for this volume. For this reason he actively sought papers which used divergent research strategies to uncover the existence of marginality in its various forms and contexts. Thus, some of the papers utilize ethnographic and life history approaches, whereas others use statistical analysis and historical data analysis. In addition to theoretical and methodological concerns a major theme for this volume is the combination of both theory and method towards an investigation of issues and problems emanate from the social structure, and are closely linked to power and domination.
Book Synopsis Critical Perspectives on Social Control and Social Regulation in Canada by : Mitch Daschuk
Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Social Control and Social Regulation in Canada written by Mitch Daschuk and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-25T00:00:00Z with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does social regulation shape who is “deviant” and who is “normal”? Critical Perspectives on Social Control and Social Regulation in Canada is an introduction to the sociology of what has traditionally been called deviance and conformity. This book shifts the focus from individuals labelled deviant to the political and economic processes that shape marginalization, power and exclusion. Class, gender, race and sexuality are the bases for understanding deviance, and it is within these relations of power that the labels “deviant” and “normal” are socially developed and the behaviours of those less powerful become regulated. This textbook introduces readers to theories and critiques of traditional approaches to deviance and conformity. Using vivid and timely examples of contemporary social regulation and control, this textbook brings to life how forces of social control and marginalization interact with social media, sex work, immigration, anti-colonialism, digital surveillance and social movements, and much more. Theories and critiques are clarified with summaries, definitions, rich illustrative examples, discussion questions, recommended resources and test banks for instructors.

Book Synopsis Race, Gender, and Deviance in Xbox Live by : Kishonna L. Gray
Download or read book Race, Gender, and Deviance in Xbox Live written by Kishonna L. Gray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race, Gender, and Deviance in Xbox Live provides a much-needed theoretical framework for examining deviant behavior and deviant bodies within one of the largest virtual gaming communities—Xbox Live. Previous research on video games has focused mostly on violence and examining violent behavior resulting from consuming this medium. This limited scope has skewed criminologists' understanding of video games and video game culture. Xbox Live has proven to be more than just a gaming platform for users. It has evolved into a multimedia entertainment outlet for more than 20 million users. This book examines the nature of social interactions within Xbox Live, which are often riddled with deviant behavior, including but not limited to racism and sexism. The text situates video games within a hegemonic framework deploying whiteness and masculinity as the norm. The experiences of the marginalized bodies are situated within the framework of deviance as they fail to conform to the hegemonic norm and become victims of racism, sexism, and other types of harassment.
