Download or read book China's Transition from Communism - New Perspectives written by Guoguang Wu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As China moved from a planned to a market economy many people expected that China’s political system would similarly move from authoritarianism to democracy. It is now clear, however, that political liberalisation does not necessarily follow economic liberalisation. This book explores this apparent contradiction, presenting many new perspectives and new thinking on the subject. It considers the path of transition in China historically, makes comparisons with other countries and examines how political culture and the political outlook in China are developing at present. A key feature of the book is the fact that most of the contributors are China-born, Western-trained scholars, who bring deep knowledge and well informed views to the study.

Book Synopsis China’s Challenges and International Order Transition by : Huiyun Feng
Download or read book China’s Challenges and International Order Transition written by Huiyun Feng and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s Challenges and International Order Transition introduces an integrated conceptual framework of “international order” categorized by three levels (power, rules, and norms) and three issue-areas (security, political, and economic). Each contributor engages one or more of these analytical dimensions to examine two questions: (1) Has China already challenged this dimension of international order? (2) How will China challenge this dimension of international order in the future? The contested views and perspectives in this volume suggest it is too simple to assume an inevitable conflict between China and the outside world. With different strategies to challenge or reform the many dimensions of international order, China’s role is not a one-way street. It is an interactive process in which the world may change China as much as China may change the world. The aim of the book is to broaden the debate beyond the “Thucydides Trap” perspective currently popular in the West. Rather than offering a single argument, this volume offers a platform for scholars, especially Chinese scholars vs. Western scholars, to exchange and debate their different views and perspectives on China and the potential transition of international order.

Book Synopsis Understanding the Growth and Development of Contemporary China from Multiple Perspectives by : Yunhuan Zhu

This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses economic development of contemporary China from multiple perspectives. China was historically the world's largest economy and enjoyed one of the most splendid civilizations. China's GDP consisted of about one third of the world's total by 1820. However, because of the stagnation in national science and technology development and the impact of war, China fell behind the world economic development soon after. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China and especially since the initiation of the Reform and Opening Up, China's strong economic growth and development has made the country the focus of world attention. People all over the world are curious to know more about contemporary China and its economic development: how the Chinese economy is and where it is going. Such issues not only concern everyone's vital interests, but also have important influences on the whole world economy. This book discusses related issues and strives to suggest answers to a host of important questions. The book is divided into eleven connected chapters that collectively provide a comprehensive and coherent discussion of the book's central focus. Each of the eleven chapters is also sufficiently self-contained and can be read on its own, which potentially enhances the usefulness of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is one of the fastest growing religions in China. Despite its long history in China and its significant indigenization or intertwinement with Chinese society and culture, Christianity continues to generate suspicion among political elites and intense debates among broader communities within China. This unique book applies socio-cultural methods in the study of contemporary Christianity. Through a wide range of empirical analyses of the complex and highly diverse experience of Christianity in contemporary China, it examines the fraught processes by which various forms and practices of Christianity interact with the Chinese social, political and cultural spheres. Contributions by top scholars in the field are structured in the following sections: Enchantment, Nation and History, Civil Society, and Negotiating Boundaries. This book offers a major contribution to the field and provides a timely, wide-ranging assessment of Christianity in Contemporary China.

Book Synopsis The Culture of Leadership in Contemporary China by : Paul Michael Linehan
Download or read book The Culture of Leadership in Contemporary China written by Paul Michael Linehan and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism in the context of Chinese leadership values has emerged as a foundation for a new generation of leaders. The once-in-a-decade transition of China’s leadership witnessed the ascendency of a consensus-oriented fifth generation of leaders supporting a central authoritative figure whose priority will likely include the reconciliation of a waning communist ideology juxtaposed with its ostensible embrace of capitalism. How will Chinese Communist Party authority, ideology, and control address the encroachment of Western values that are centered on Roman law, Greek philosophy, and Christian religion which prioritizes individual freedom and democracy? This book examines the role of traditional Chinese values, ideology, and philosophy as a key determinant in modern China’s leadership succession. The author asserts that, as communist ideology wanes, Chinese leaders will turn to their own traditional values found in Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism to establish legitimacy to rule as they seek to promote Chinese prominence and greatness in the world. The author’s research assesses China’s promotion of its own traditional values in rejecting foreign value influence. Since the inception of modern China at the beginning of the 20th century, China’s leadership transition has evolved from an authoritarian, cult-like dictatorship to a consensus-oriented process. In researching this metamorphosis, this book offers social, political, cultural, and historical perspectives to demonstrate that Chinese human values and character factors have risen in prominence as key elements in the mandate of Chinese governance and leadership. The author concludes that Chinese leadership values and its study and diffusion across sectors of Chinese leadership—including business, organizations, and government—have become a means to accentuate Chinese values as a viable alternative to Western claims of absolute and universally accepted values.
Book Synopsis Cultural Nationalism in Contemporary China by : Yingjie Guo
Download or read book Cultural Nationalism in Contemporary China written by Yingjie Guo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vast majority of literature on 'Chinese nationalism' the distinction between nation and state is rarely made, consequently nationalism usually appears as loyalty to the state rather than identification with the nation. Yet, since 1989, both the official configuration of the nation and the state's monopolized right to name the nation have come under rigorous challenge. Cultural Nationalism in Contemporary China relocates the discussion of nationalism to within a more contemporary framework which explores the disjunction between the people and the state and the relationship of each to the nation. With its challenging exploration of one of the most neglected aspects of identity in China, this book should appeal to Asianists, China watchers and all of those with an interest in cultural and sociological phenomena in East Asia.
