Recent research has focused on gender differences and there is increasing evidence that estrogens exert protective effects in schizophrenia. Hormonal fluctuations or lack of estrogen may increase the risk of depression among vulnerable women. Treatment of depression with estrogen may stabilize and restore disrupted homeostasis – as during post-partum, premenstrual, or perimenopausal conditions – and act as a psychomodulator to offset vulnerability to dysphoric mood when estrogen levels are significantly decreased, as in the case of postmenopausal women. Studies on the effect of estrogens on Alzheimer’s Disease are still rather controversial, they do, however, facilitate the hypothesis that estrogens may have a modifying effect on the onset and course of AD, at least in subgroups of patients.

In the 1960s, the regulation of endocrine function was considered to rest primarily in the feed back system between the pituitary and the secretions of various target organs. In R. H. Williams' Fourth Edition of the Textbook of Endocrinology published in 1968, the chapter on neuroendocrinology did refer to the median eminence gland with a relatively brief mention of various releasing factors that were the subject of ongoing studies. Only six years later, in the Fifth Edition published in 1974, Seymour Reichlin's chapter on neuroendocrinology listed nine specific hypothalamic releasing factors of which three had already been isolated and purified and thus were referred to as hormones. Most recently in the current Sixth Edition, published in 1981, the chapter on neuroendocrinology contains a detailed description of the physiology of the various hypothalamic releasing factors and hormones, but also significant emphasis is given to the various neurotransmitters that have been shown to regulate the synthesis and release of these important hypothalamic hormones. In addition, there appeared for the first time in this classic textbook a chapter on psychoendocrinology. One may wonder why there is so much interest not only in endocrinology but more recently in psychology and psychiatry about psychoneuroendocrine It has been known for some time function. Several reasons may be suggested.

Only somebody who has lived through most of the explosive develop ment - over the last 25 years or so - in the neuroscience in general, and in hypothalamic functional neuroanatomy in parti cular, can fully appreciate the remarkably consistent picture emerging from this study. The writer of this foreword was (alas!) an active participant in the very early and premature, and also largely naive, attempts to penetrate the "jungle" of hypothalamic connections with degeneration methods when they first became available in the late 1930s. (I have told a part of this rather pathetic story is an autobiographical sketch in Pioneers in Neuroendocrinology [Meites et aI., (eds) (1975), Vol I. Plenum] because I was sufficiently self-critical not to publish my early results.) Even with the suppressive Nauta-type silver stains, introduced in the mid-1950s, studies of hypothala mic connections had only marginal results, which the reader will certainly appreciate if he compares the relevant figures in the first edition of Hypothalamic Control of the Anterior Pituitary [Szentagothai et al. (1962) Akademiai Kiad6, Budapest], with Dr. Zaborszky's concluding diagrams. The approach used by Dr. Zaborszky of combining the more advanced Fink-Heimer type degeneration techniques, and some of their most recent modifications by Gallyas et al.
