Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Control comprises twenty-one essays by leading experts in the field of control. Most of these were presented as plenary lectures at the colloquium erspectives in Control held at Paris, June 1998, and organised by the GdR-Automatique to mark the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of its founder, Ioan Dori Landau. The book provides a unique opportunity to report the views of the world-renowned authorities on some of the directions in which control disciplines might evolve in various areas at the threshold of the twenty-first century. The variety of essays, which includes advanced methodological contributions and overview tutorials as well as more philosophical reflections, contributes to the richness of the book. Many aspects of the field are discussed , including: - adaptive control; - passivity concepts; - nonlinear control; - system identification; - supervisory control; - diagnosis; - emerging applied fields such as mechatronics, air traffic control, power plants, and educational devices. Many of the pioneering aspects of Professor Landau's work are covered. The book will be of interest to scientists as a guide to challenging research subjects, and of value to applied researchers as a survey of the current state of the art and potential of the field.

Book excerpt: Control Theory is a field of applied mathematics and engineering that deals with the basic principles underlying the analysis and design of control systems. "Controlling a system" means to influence the behavior of the system in order to achieve a desired goal. Control theory deals with the use of a controller to achieve this purpose. Control theory has been recognized as a mathematical subject since the 1960's; it has contributed to scientific and technological progress in many areas over the last few decades. Control theory has been extensively used in modern society, from simple applications such as temperature devices to sophisticated systems in space flight. The aim of this book is to solve different problems concerning control systems. This book joins a number of recent works in control theory and is useful as a source for researchers in this field concerning control systems.

Book excerpt: A look at wargaming’s past, present, and future—from digital games to tabletop games—and its use in entertainment, education, and military planning. With examples from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Harpoon, Warhammer 40,000, and more! Games with military themes date back to antiquity, and yet they are curiously neglected in much of the academic and trade literature on games and game history. This volume fills that gap, providing a diverse set of perspectives on wargaming’s past, present, and future. In Zones of Control, contributors consider wargames played for entertainment, education, and military planning, in terms of design, critical analysis, and historical contexts. They consider both digital and especially tabletop games, most of which cover specific historical conflicts or are grounded in recognizable real-world geopolitics. Game designers and players will find the historical and critical contexts often missing from design and hobby literature; military analysts will find connections to game design and the humanities; and academics will find documentation and critique of a sophisticated body of cultural work in which the complexity of military conflict is represented in ludic systems and procedures. Each section begins with a long anchoring chapter by an established authority, which is followed by a variety of shorter pieces both analytic and anecdotal. Topics include the history of playing at war; operations research and systems design; wargaming and military history; wargaming’s ethics and politics; gaming irregular and non-kinetic warfare; and wargames as artistic practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the text of the plenary lectures and the mini-courses of the European Control Conference (ECC'93) held in Groningen, the Netherlands, June 2S-July 1, 1993. However, the book is not your usu al conference proceedings. Instead, the authors took this occasion to take a broad overview of the field of control and discuss its development both from a theoretical as well as from an engineering perpective. The first essay is by the key-note speaker ofthe conference, A.G.J. Mac Farlane. It consists of a non-technical discussion of information processing and knowledge acquisition as the key features of control engineering tech nology. The next six articles are accounts of the plenary addresses. The contribution by R.W. Brockett concerns a mathematical framework for modelling motion control, a central question in robotics and vision. In the paper by M. Morari the engineering and the economic relevance of chemical process control are considered, in particular statistical quality control and the control of systems with constraints. The article by A.C.P.M. Backx is written from an industrial perspec tive. The author is director of an engineering consulting firm involved in the design of industrial control equipment. Specifically, the possibility of obtaining high performance and reliable controllers by modelling, identifi cation, and optimizing industrial processes is discussed.

What started as a graduate student' s curiosity about individual differ ences in need for personal control led to a personality scale, a few pub lications, some additional questions, and additional research. For reasons I no longer recall, I named this personality trait desire for control. One study led to another, and questions by students and colleagues often spurred me to apply desire for control to new areas and new questions. At the same time, researchers around the globe began using the scale and sending me reprints of articles and copies of papers describing work they had done on desire for contro!. In the past decade or so, I have talked or corresponded with dozens of students who have used the scale in their doctoral dissertation and master's thesis research. I have heard of or seen translations of the Desirability of Control Scale into German, Polish, Japanese, and French. There is also a children's version of the scale. I estirnate that there have now been more than a hundred studies conducted on desire for contro!.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent introduction to feedback control system design, this book offers a theoretical approach that captures the essential issues and can be applied to a wide range of practical problems. Its explorations of recent developments in the field emphasize the relationship of new procedures to classical control theory, with a focus on single input and output systems that keeps concepts accessible to students with limited backgrounds. The text is geared toward a single-semester senior course or a graduate-level class for students of electrical engineering. The opening chapters constitute a basic treatment of feedback design. Topics include a detailed formulation of the control design program, the fundamental issue of performance/stability robustness tradeoff, and the graphical design technique of loopshaping. Subsequent chapters extend the discussion of the loopshaping technique and connect it with notions of optimality. Concluding chapters examine controller design via optimization, offering a mathematical approach that is useful for multivariable systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of consent and criminal law commonly focuses on consent in sports, sexual activity, and medical treatment. The notion of consent and the influence of state control in this context, however, are pervasive throughout the criminal justice process from the pre-trial stage to rehabilitation. This edited collection charts an important and original pathway to understanding these important issues, pre-, during, and post-trial, from a range of perspectives, including doctrinal, socio-legal, intersectional, medico-legal, feminist, critical legal, and queer theoretical viewpoints. The collection addresses the complex inter-relationship between consent and state control in relation to private authorisation and public censure; sexual behaviour; the age of consent; queering consent; Pro-LGBTI Refugee cases; rape by fraud; male rape; undercover policing; prisons and consent; compulsory treatment for sex offenders; sex offenders with high functioning autism and the suitability of sex offender treatment programmes; and, the criminalisation of HIV transmission. This multi-disciplinary approach draws together a variety of experts from legal and medical academia and practice in order to confront the issues raised by these subjects, which are likely to remain controversial and in need of reform for years to come.

Book excerpt: In the midst of an international crisis in migration policy – widely referred to as a ‘refugee crisis’ – this book brings together timely analyses of the manifold and yet specific ways in which migration affects globalized societies, set against the background of the rise of nationalist and populist movements. The voices of migrants and refugees are rarely heard in this context: usually, they are debated about, summarized and reported but their agency is denied. Each contribution to this volume adds an empirical perspective to our understanding of how language relates to migration in a specific national context. The chapters use innovative combinations of multimodal, qualitative and quantitative analyses to examine a broad range of genres and data related to the voices of migrants and reporting about migrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a variety of perceptions of and perspectives on infection prevention and control. In doing this, the chapters will reflect upon challenging and controversial new ways of looking at infection prevention and control aimed at generating both discussion and debate as well as practical solutions. With this in mind, the book will aim not only to challenge the existing status quo but also push the frontiers of knowledge, thinking and practice where infection prevention and control is concerned. This is vital when considered in the light of cross infection rates, the number of healthcare providers who are being identified by the Care Quality Commission as falling below acceptable standards of infection prevention and control and the almost compulsive persistent non-adherent behaviours of those involved in the provision of medicine, health, social care and other disciplines related to caring with regards to the undertaking of safe and appropriate standards of infection prevention and control. There is no doubt that this book will be challenging with regards to the readers' perceptions and perspectives of infection prevention and control. Where this topic is concerned however, such a challenging approach is vital if the health, safety and well being of individuals is to be positively promoted among all those involved in the health and wellbeing of others.

The book contains contributions from a number of 1eading academics; some were close c- leagues of Ken's at the University of Southampton, some have been at other universities but knew Ken fair1y well, and still some who never met Ken but who knew of him through bis work. The unifying motivation for all of them, however, was their immense sense of loss of an extremely proactive and excellent academic. Having led the research group on the Southampton Econometric Model project for three years, Ken was appointed to the Chair of Financia1 Control at the University of Southampton in 1970; at that time this was one of only a handful of similar Chairs in the UK. Most of Ken's subsequent academic career was devoted to contributing to the study of financial control, initially in the private sector and subsequently in the public sector. The breadth of bis interests was demonstrated by bis enviable ability to contribute to the areas of industrial economics, accounting, and management science. We hope therefore that this volume which embraces contributions from leading academics in each of these three fields is a fitting tribute to Ken's work.

Critical Perspectives on Social Control and Social Regulation in Canada is an introduction to the sociology of what has traditionally been called deviance and conformity. This book shifts the focus from individuals labelled deviant to the political and economic processes that shape marginalization, power and exclusion. Class, gender, race and sexuality are the bases for understanding deviance, and it is within these relations of power that the labels “deviant” and “normal” are socially developed and the behaviours of those less powerful become regulated. This textbook introduces readers to theories and critiques of traditional approaches to deviance and conformity. Using vivid and timely examples of contemporary social regulation and control, this textbook brings to life how forces of social control and marginalization interact with social media, sex work, immigration, anti-colonialism, digital surveillance and social movements, and much more. Theories and critiques are clarified with summaries, definitions, rich illustrative examples, discussion questions, recommended resources and test banks for instructors.
