Book excerpt: We provide a long-run perspective on neutral interest rates with new estimates for 16 advanced economies since the 1870s using the Laubach and Williams approach. Our estimates differ substantially from commonly used proxies. We find that, while cross-country heterogeneity was significant in the past, since the 1980s the decline has been common to many countries. Traditional determinants such as population aging and productivity growth are strongly correlated with the changes in neutral rates, while others like the relative price of capital and inequality exhibit weak relationships with r*. We also find that neutral rates co-vary negatively with public debt-to-GDP ratios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age sixteen, Bill German began publishing a Rolling Stones fanzine out of his bedroom in Brooklyn. And when he presented an issue to the band on a street in New York, he obviously made an impression: before he knew it, the Stones had hired him to document their career, inviting him in to the studio and to their private jam sessions. He traveled the world with them, stayed at their homes, and, for almost two decades, witnessed their wild parties and nasty feuds. Yet through it all, he never lost his identity as that “nice boy from Brooklyn.” Under Their Thumb is a fish-out-of-water tale about a fan who wanted to know everything about his favorite rock group—and suddenly learned too much. This updated edition, published to mark the Stones’ sixtieth anniversary, features forty new pages of text and more than thirty never-before-seen photos.

Book excerpt: The 25th issue of ICOM Education that I have the pleasure to introduce has two new features: – it is sponsored by the European Union; – all CECA members were invited to present a contribution. The European Union sponsored our journal through EMEE EuroVision - Museums Exhibiting Europe, a project led by the University of Augsburg, whose purpose is to explore an innovative, interdisciplinary approach for museums to re-interpret their objects. Therefore the core of the project is the change of perspective (COP). The project partners all considered CECA as an outstanding platform to disseminate the project, which is a further proof of the reputation of our Committee. […] (Emma Nardi)

Book excerpt: This book is the first of two volumes that look at the changed landscape of higher education and the academic profession. This volume focuses on academic work, examining the significant changes that have taken place in the backgrounds, specialisations, expectations and work roles of academic staff. The academic profession is ageing, and becoming increasingly insecure, more accountable, more internationalised and less likely to be organised along disciplinary lines. The private sector is more prominent, expectations from society are different and increasing, professional roles are evolving, and there is a new devotion to knowledge. This leads to questions about the attractiveness of an academic career and the quest for greater relevance of research. This book discusses in detail the themes that are common in this changed arena, such as the context for change, the relation of teaching to research, research productivity, applied and commercial research, and the relevance of teaching and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atonement has been described as the central doctrine of Christianity and yet, surprisingly, the church has never insisted on a particular understanding of how redemption in Christ was achieved. Instead, a miscellany of metaphors has been employed, each picturing “something” of Christ’s work. Recent debate within Reformed Evangelicalism has been characterized by claims for hegemony to be granted to penal substitution versus counter-arguments for a kaleidoscopic, multi-model understanding. Notably absent in these discussions, however, are two considerations. One is any common nexus to draw atonement thought together. The other is any positive theological contribution deriving from God’s preexisting relationship with Israel (the presumed role of which has rather been to provide a negative contrast of law-versus-grace and works-versus-faith, as the dark background against which the light of Christ may shine more brightly). Recent scholarship, however—particularly the “new perspective on Paul”—has comprehensively dismantled the old stereotypes concerning first-century Judaism. This book asks how differently we might think about the atonement once it is brought into conversation with the new scholarship. It concludes by proposing a “new perspective” on atonement in which Christ is central, Israel and Torah are affirmed, and the traditional metaphors continue to find their place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive Development from a Strategy Perspective recognises the outstanding scientific legacy of Robert S. Siegler as a pioneer of modern research on cognitive development throughout the lifespan. This volume presents a collection of essays written by leading scholars in the field, using cutting-edge research to illustrate how Siegler’s work and ideas lay the groundwork for much of the modern studies on cognitive development. The collection includes chapters which examine strategic aspects of lifespan cognitive development, change mechanisms underlying cognitive development, and numeracy acquisition with emphasis given to the application of new strategies for education. It explores conceptual and methodological frameworks to best study and understand development during childhood and adulthood, and the role of foundational core knowledge on development and acquisition. These foundational issues are examined from various angles and finally integrated in a concluding panoramic chapter written by Siegler himself. Cognitive Development from a Strategy Perspective offers valuable reading for graduates and researchers in cognitive development and mathematical cognition, as well as those at the interface of psychology and education.
