Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious commitments can be a powerful engine for progressive social change, and in this new book, Raúl E. Zegarra examines the process of articulation of religious beliefs and political concerns that takes place in religious organizing and activism. Focusing on the example of Latin American liberation theology and the work of Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, Zegarra shows how liberation theology advocates have been able to produce a new balance between faith and politics that advances an agenda of progressive social change without reducing politics to faith or faith to politics. Drawing from theologian David Tracy's method of critical correlation, the book focuses on key historical, philosophical, and theological shifts that have allowed liberation theologians to produce a new interpretation of the relationship between faith and politics in the Christian tradition, especially when issues of social justice are at stake. The book further approaches liberation theology's contributions to theorizing social justice through an unconventional path: a critical dialogue with the work of philosopher John Rawls. This dialogue, as Zegarra contends, allows us to see more clearly the contributions of liberation theology to the cause of progressive social change. Ultimately the book stands between "public religion" and "public reason," offering something of a blueprint for theological innovation and for how to remain committed to one's faith while respecting and defending the core values of democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is theology a dead corpse or living organism? For Uruguayan Jesuit Juan Luis Segundo (1925-1996), theology is dynamic. Freedom and existence for central themes. Segundo believed that theology should be transformative in human lives. For a theology to be transformative, there must be a connection to existence. That is, it must be existential. Yet most scholars have overlooked this assumption in critical analyses of liberation theology. This prima facie connection to existence is distinguishable from existentialism as a school of philosophy. By showing the significant existential dimension to Segundo's theology, assessing his work and contribution to twentieth-century theology relates to freedom, ecumenism, the role of faith in society, and the relationship between faith and ideologies.

Book excerpt: Latin American Liberation Theology is perhaps the most dramatic expression of the turn to history and experience in Post-Vatican II Roman Catholic theology. The emphasis on contextuality, socio-historical transformation and the privileged status of the poor are some of the most widely acknowledged features of Latin American Liberation Theology, but the movement represents much more. Liberation Theology, as a common thrust among Latin American theologians, represents a theological movement with a vital ecumenical dynamic that transcends the divides of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. This ecumenical dimension of Liberation Theology is not often adverted to and has been little studied. This book corrects this deficiency. Despite differences in style, theme, and personal vocabulary, Juan L. Segundo and Rubem A. Alves are excellent examples of the fundamental post-sixteenth-century thrust in Liberation Theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: By reaching beneath many contemporary studies, Exodus: A Hermeneutics of Freedom provides a clear, healthy method for others to follow what is happening in liberation theology. We badly needed a book like this one, to forge the links in the intuitive leaps and prophetic visions of other books. Croatto turns to the Bible for models and for procedure, so that the historic events of Scripture not only inspire us but their narrative or 'word' directs us carefully yet vigorously along the same path. Caroll Stuhlmueller, C.P., Catholic Theological Union, Chicago Severino Croatto is one of the most talented biblical scholars of Latin America, and this book is one of the foundational sources in the hermeneutics of Latin American liberation theology. Book excerpt: In the past one hundred years alone, more than 200 million people have been killed as a consequence of systematic repression, political revolutions, or ethnic or religious war. The legacy of such violence lingers long after the immediate conflict. Drawing on the author’s experiences of his native El Salvador, Liberation through Reconciliation builds on Jon Sobrino’s thought to construct a Christian spirituality and theology of reconciliation that overcomes conflict by attending to the demands of truth, justice, and forgiveness.

Book excerpt: In the last decades, many countries in Latin America underwent a transition from dictatorship to democracy. Truth commissions were an essential instrument of uncovering politically motivated crimes and serious human rights violations. However, in many cases truth came without justice, perpetrators were not held accountable, and the reparations policy was rather restrictive. The authors of this volume address the issue from a transdisciplinary perspective. On the one hand, they focus on a past that is shaped by fierce conflicts but also by attempts of fostering reconciliation in the middle of conflict. On the other hand, they address a reconciliation that still lies in the future and has to do with justice.Their first part offers a collection of case studies that approach the topics of reconciliation and conflict resolution during and in the aftermath of dictatorship and civil war from different perspectives and academic disciplines. Their second part is dedicated to experiences with reconciliation, conflict resolution and migration from a global and comparative perspective.Several contributors reflect the Hölderlin perspective of "reconciliation in the middle of dispute". Other contributions aim to deepen our theoretical understanding of reconciliation by exploring the diversity of interpretations of the concept itself and elaborating the specific benefit of reconciliatory approaches for a sustainable peace. Two authors offer an in-depth analysis of particular conflicts, and one article deals with the influence of religion and culture on the social role of Brazilian migrants in Japan.

In this impressive new study, Richard Barcellos shows that the Lord's Supper is a means of grace because of what the Holy Spirit does in the souls of believers when local churches partake of it.
