The research is based on recent theoretical developments which suggest that a cultural identity need not be exclusive. Instead, a person may develop in such a way as to make possible identification with more than one culture and in the process acquire a wide range of competencies and sensitivites. If so, biculturalism could prove a highly significant asset with regard to development to the levels of intra- and interpersonal sophistication required of persons who staff settings characterized by ethnic diversity, complex team work, and recurrent problems of a human relations nature. The bicultural person may be a superior candidate for a variety of organizational and social roles. Confirmation of this possibility awaits development and validation of a comprehensive instrument for measuring biculturalism and, more specifically, particular personality, life history, and behavioral correlates of biculturalism that predict career and leadership potential in different settings, personal and social adjustment in those settings, and satisfaction in living. Initial efforts at developing an instrument suited to this purpose are summarized in this report. A selection instrument for identifying bicultural persons was developed from intensive interviews of a small sample of bicultural adults. Revisions and refinements, combined with field testing, yielded a three part instrument suited to identifying individual's exposure to, or involvement in, primary institutions (family, religion, politics, education) of Chicano and Anglo cultures.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the complexities of successful attainment and achievement of 10 Mexican American males in a rural Southwest community college. This study strives to offer insights concerning the questions: (a) what behavioral patterns of current family, peers, and conditions in school have influenced the educational decisions of these Mexican American males? and (b) what social conditions motivate these Mexican American males to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity? This qualitative research was also aimed at establishing and understanding how a selected number of Mexican American males have achieved academic success. The researcher chose 10 men with either an associate of arts or an associate of science degrees for an in-depth interview and used a semi-structured interview guide in an effort to prompt oral discourse. The interviewer posed questions concerning academic conditions, family impact, college environment, and financial issues. The responses to the questions led to similar themes involved in these students' course completion and graduation. The researcher used a theoretical framework using Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) in which he suggests that not only environmental factors, but motivational factors along with self-regulatory mechanisms affect an individual's behavior. This research illustrated the conditions that facilitated reaching the participant's educational goal and mission, which was to complete a two-year degree at the community college. The inquiry examined the behavioral patterns that have been an influence on the educational decisions of these Mexican American males, and what social conditions have motivated them to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity.

The first goal is to define domains that comprise the thousands of personal characteristics that make a person unique. And the second is to examine the generalizability of dimensions across cultures and languages, that is, to observe whether personality domains are universal or culture-specific. Following the steps of personality psychologists the first goal of this dissertation was to define dimensions of personality of Americans and Mexicans, and the second was to observe if dimensions were equivalent or unique across these two cultures. Typically personality researchers, in order to identify the most relevant aspects of human personality, have turned to a questionnaire method whereby people rate themselves along dimensions of traits most often described in natural language. These trait terms are derived from various dictionaries within the researchers' culture. Multiple ratings are then factor analyzed yielding a smaller group of broad traits that then serve to define the culture's primary personality dimensions. In this investigation, personality terms were culled from open-ended personality descriptions. Relying on a new text analytic procedure called the meaning extraction method, it was possible to define dimensions of personality in Americans and Mexicans. The factoranalytically derived results showed that there were seven relevant dimensions of personality for Americans and six dimensions for Mexicans. Using qualitative and quantitative analyses it was possible to observe which dimensions were equivalent and which dimensions were unique to each culture. Specifically, for both Americans and Mexicans, the most important dimensions were Sociability, Values, Hobbies/Activities, and Emotionality. Three dimensions were unique to Americans (i.e., Fun, Existentialism, and College Experience), and two for the Mexicans (Relationships and Simpatía). Other analyses were done to explore the universality and uniqueness of the dimensions. For example, dimensions were correlated with self-reports that measure dimensions wellestablished by personality researchers. The challenge of establishing dimensions across cultures and languages are discussed, along with the limitations of the approach.

Book excerpt: This study represents the third phase of continuing research on the psychodynamics of biculturalism/multiculturalism in Mexican American college students. A biculturalism inventory was administered to 284 Mexican-American college students in Texas and California. Based on scores obtained in the inventory, 55 subjects (28 from Texas, 27 from California) who could be easily classified as traditional, atraditional, or bicultural were selected. A test battery was administered to these students along with a life history interview. Results showed that biculturals scored significantly more internal on the Rotter I-E Scale than either traditionals or atraditionals. Biculturals also achieved higher scores on leadership, interethnic facilitation, and multicultural participation dimensions of the life history. Of three bicultural identity types (Synthesized, Functional Bicultural/Chicano Orientation, and Functional Bicultural/Anglo Orientation), Synthesized Biculturals obtained the highest scores on interethnic facilitation, multicultural participation, and positive interpersonal experiences with peers and authorities who were both Mexican American and Anglo in the domains of school, home and community. It was concluded that the above findings support the major assumptions of the Flexibility, Synthesis and Expansion Model of biculturalism/multiculturalism.
