Book excerpt: Within this research, a version of the person-environment fit model, adapted for use in higher education, was tested. It was postulated that stable personality characteristics (represented by the Big-Five personality traits) interact with engagement with the college environment, resulting in good or bad fit, as measured by semester-tosemester persistence and cumulative grade point average (GPA). Data were collected via a self-report online survey containing questions about personality characteristics, degree of academic effort made, degree and quality of perceived campus support, number and quality of faculty-student interactions, and number and quality of college peer relationships. The final sample was comprised of 129 students from San Diego area postsecondary institutions. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the degree to which personality characteristics interacted with level of engagement with the college environment to predict cumulative GPA. The degree to which various biodemographic variables (e.g., ethnicity, gender, level of parental education) predicted GPA was also examined using ANOVA. Due to small sample size (n = 6), all results reported represent findings for a sample of students who intended to persist in college. Results indicated that agreeableness, conscientiousness, and engagement with faculty, peers and campus environment significantly predicted cumulative GPA for students who intended to enroll in the upcoming semester of college. Institutions are encouraged to employ this person-environment fit model in pinpointing students who are at greater risk of academic failure and devise strategies to assist them in attaining academic goals based on the strategic assessment of personality and environment interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Kenneth Feldman and Theodore Newcomb review and synthesize the findings of more than 1,500 studies conducted over four decades on the subject. Writing in 1991, Ernest Pascarella and Patrick Terenzini maintained that The Impact of College on Students not only provided the first comprehensive conceptual map of generally uncharted terrain, but also generated a number of major hypotheses about how college influences students. They also noted that Feldman and Newcombe helped to stimulate a torrent of studies on the characteristics of collegiate institutions and how students change and benefit during and after their college years from college attendance. The Impact of College on Students is now a standard text in graduate courses as well as a standard and frequently cited reference for scholars, students, and administrators of higher education. Much of what we understand about the developmental influence of college is based on this work.

Book excerpt: College and Student: Selected Readings in the Social Psychology of Higher Education is a collection of papers that provides a sociological analysis of higher education. The title empathizes on in-depth analysis of topics rather than covering a wide variety of higher education topics. The text first covers the structure and process in higher education, and then proceeds to tackling the transition from high school to college. Next, the selection deals with the change and stability during college years. The fourth part talks about the assessment of the influence on different college environments. Part Five discusses the students and college substructures, while Part Six tackles the students, student culture, and teachers. The text talks about recommendations, innovations, experimentations, and reform. The book will be of great use to educators, sociologists, and behavioral scientists.

The current study looks further into how the big five personality traits (Koseoglu, 2016) impact vocational choices based on Hollands' vocational scale (RIASEC). Intention to persist based on academic satisfaction and fit were also variables analyzed throughout this study. A survey was used to collect data on personality types among various majors at a single urban research institution in Northeast Ohio. The survey also included environmental fit measures regarding students' academic satisfaction and fit, and whether this predicted intention to persist. Results showed that some personality types were correlated with specific vocational interests. If a personality type was positively correlated with a vocational choice, it could be more likely a student would choose majors within that vocational path. If a personality type was negatively correlated with a vocational choice, that student may not be as likely to choose a major within that vocational path. It was also found that students were more likely to persist within their major if they felt satisfied both academically and environmentally within their major.

Book excerpt: Life goals, values, vocational interests, and personality traits are important factors that influence career and everyday life decision-making. This dissertation presents a framework for how personality traits, interests, and values relate to life goals. There were two studies conducted using structural equation modeling. Study 1 was a cross-sectional study investigating the domain-specific relationship among major life goals, personality traits, interests, and values. The results showed that personality traits are the most fundamental disposition and can predict vocational interests, values, and then goals. Moreover, in certain domains, interests serve as a mediator between personality traits and life goals; values serve as a mediator between personality traits and goals, and between interests and goals. Study 2 is a longitudinal study examining how relationships among major life goals, interests, and personality traits may change over time. The results indicated that personality, interests, and major life goals are stable across time. Both personality and interests are enduring psychological dispositions that can predict future major life goals. The models also show that some variables are more capable of explaining and predicting major life goals when other variables were controlled. Combining these two studies, this dissertation contributes to the deeper understanding of how important psychological dispositions influence individuals0́9 goal settings during emerging adulthood. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies together provide a broader picture of the trajectory of these dispositions0́9 development.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and academic major change in two samples of college undergraduates. Utilizing a field study design, a total number of 859 undergraduates completed an online inventory that included the "Big Five" and other -related, narrow personality traits, as well as academic major change and various demographic variables. A number of expected and unexpected findings emerged. As hypothesized, the traits of Sense of Identity and Extraversion were significantly and negatively related to decisions to change major, but only for certain grade levels. Contrary to expectations, Career Decidedness and Optimism were significantly and positively related to academic major change across groups, regardless of class ranking. When parsing the data by college year, additional and significant relationships appeared. Extraversion and Sense of Identity were positively related to academic major change among freshmen, sophomores and seniors, which was a significant and unexpected finding. Conscientiousness, and Emotional Stability were unrelated to academic major change overall, but were significantly and positively related to students changing major at least one time. Among non-directional hypotheses, Work Drive was negatively associated with academic major change across all groups, as well as among juniors and sophomores. Openness was both positively (sophomores) and negatively (juniors) related to major change. A final analysis that looked at students who changed majors two or more times, both Self-directed Learning and Work Drive significantly and positively correlated with the dependent variable. Both Career Decidedness and Optimism increased the odds of being a major changer in a logistic regression analysis of a residence hall sample. Implications for career planning and advising are discussed, along with future research recommendations.
