Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 19th-century self-defense manual—written by a master swordsman—will appeal to fencers and martial artists as well as fans of Victorian-era culture, steampunk, and American history Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery was a master swordsman who participated in more than fifty duels, fought under twelve flags, battled gangsters, and was constantly involved in the great conflicts and upheavals of his time. In the 1870s, he began writing his magnum opus—a series of newspaper articles that are now collected here for the first time in Self-Defense for Gentleman and Ladies. In this book, Colonel Monstery presents a unique look into the Victorian-era fighting world. He describes styles such as British “purring” (shin-kicking), Welsh jump-kicking, and American rough-and-tumble fighting, in addition to providing illustrated instruction in the art of gentlemanly self-defense with a cane, staff, or one’s bare hands. Fifty rare drawings and photographs from the period illuminate Monstery’s world, while an extensive glossary of terms and an introductory biography of Colonel Monstery—including fascinating details of his many duels as well as his groundbreaking devotion to teaching fencing and self-defense skills to women—update his text to make it accessible and useful to gentlemen and ladies of any era. Contents Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery: The Unknown American Martial Arts Master I. Introduction. II. The Logic of Boxing. III. Standing and Striking. IV. Advancing to Strike and Feinting. V. I would say that 99% of women who know how to handle a gun or who are engaged in practical shooting as a sport, were influenced by a male in their lives whether it is the father, husband, brother, boyfriend, uncle or a male friend. Gun ownership, inarguably, is a man’s world. But, it did not say that women cannot dip their fingers to it, if it is necessary, or even if she was just plain interested. In my case, the guilty party was my husband who suavely got my nod, first, for him to own a gun and later on, to join him on his shooting practice, tournaments and gun shows. I have to admit that in the beginning, I would cringe whenever I would see him working on his gun (and later on guns). I always have this thought that it will discharge accidentally and someone could get hurt. At that time, I could not even hold a gun. But then, gradually, I warmed up to it ---- I started holding the gun (no bullets, of course) until later on, my husband would be training me on how to hold it properly, how to get the right stance and eventually how to fire it. Believe it or not, within months, I was going with him on his practice shooting and tournaments. At first, I was the photographer and videographer. Eventually, I would be doing my own practice sessions and would join him on tournaments.

Book excerpt: When it comes to home security and defense, nobody takes on the topics of Awareness, Prevention and Defense like Suzy Meyer. In At Home in the Real World: A Manual for the Modern Woman in an Unstable World, she uses personal narrative and illustrations, to capture her transformation from Queen of Denial to a stronger, more grounded individual capable of defending her home and herself. Meyer boldly exposes 5 dangerous myths about police protection and restraining orders, and uncovers the shocking extent of unreported crimes against people and property. Each reader is shown how to assess the safety of her or his home and how to strengthen weak areas. These lessons are based on three tenets: Eliminate Surprise, Deter Access, and Have a Plan! Meyer also encourages each person to tap into their primal instincts and get strong, both physically and mentally. In Defense, she gives careful consideration to unarmed self defense, improvised weapons, pepper spray, and firearms. The treatment on guns for home defense is deeply researched, thoughtful and articulate. The combination of narrative, images, quotes and humor make it a compelling read that's been called "a manual to live by." The book includes: 5 Dangerous Myths 3 "Think Like a Predator" Exercises 20 Home Security Products; 3 DIY Projects 4 Case Studies on Strengthening Doors & Windows 4 Lessons in Badassery 12 Improvised Weapons 10 Body Weapons & 15 Body Targets 3 Considerations for New Gun Buyers 3 Recommended Firearms for Home Defense 8 Legal Terms Home Defenders Need to Know and more.
