Download or read book Legacies written by Steven Lubar and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Smithsonian Institution has been America's museum since 1846. What do its vast collections -- from the ruby slippers to a piece of Plymouth Rock, first ladies' gowns to patchwork quilts, a Model T Ford to a customized Ford LTD low rider -- tell Americans about themselves? In this lavishly illustrated guide to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Steven Lubar and Kathleen M. Kendrick tell the stories behind more than 250 of the museum's treasures, many of them never before photographed for publication. These stories not only reveal what America as a nation has decided to save and why but also speak to changing visions of national identity. As the authors demonstrate, views of history change over time, methods of historical investigation evolve and improve, and America's understanding of the past matures. Shifts in focus and attitude lie at the hearth of Legacies, which is organized around four concepts of what a national museum of history can be: a treasure house, a shrine to the famous, a palace of progress, and a mirror of the nation. Thus, the museum collects cherished or precious objects, houses celebrity memorabilia, documents technological advances, and reflects visitors' own lives. Taking examples from science and technology, politics, decorative arts, military history, ethnic heritage, popular culture and everyday life, the authors provide historical context for the work of the Smithsonian and shed new light on what is important, and who is included, in American history. Throughout its history, Lubar and Kendrick conclude, the museum has played a vital role in both shaping and reflecting America's sense of itself as a nation.

Book Synopsis Haunting Legacies by : Gabriele Schwab
Download or read book Haunting Legacies written by Gabriele Schwab and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From mass murder to genocide, slavery to colonial suppression, acts of atrocity have lives that extend far beyond the horrific moment. They engender trauma that echoes for generations, in the experiences of those on both sides of the act. Gabriele Schwab reads these legacies in a number of narratives, primarily through the writing of postwar Germans and the descendents of Holocaust survivors. She connects their work to earlier histories of slavery and colonialism and to more recent events, such as South African Apartheid, the practice of torture after 9/11, and the "disappearances" that occurred during South American dictatorships. Schwab's texts include memoirs, such as Ruth Kluger's Still Alive and Marguerite Duras's La Douleur; second-generation accounts by the children of Holocaust survivors, such as Georges Perec's W, Art Spiegelman's Maus, and Philippe Grimbert's Secret; and second-generation recollections by Germans, such as W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz, Sabine Reichel's What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?, and Ursula Duba's Tales from a Child of the Enemy. She also incorporates her own reminiscences of growing up in postwar Germany, mapping interlaced memories and histories as they interact in psychic life and cultural memory. Schwab concludes with a bracing look at issues of responsibility, reparation, and forgiveness across the victim/perpetrator divide.

Book Synopsis Cosmopolitanism and the Legacies of Dissent by : Tamara Caraus
Download or read book Cosmopolitanism and the Legacies of Dissent written by Tamara Caraus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core idea shared by all cosmopolitan views is that all human beings belong to a single community and the ultimate units of moral concern are individual human beings, not states or particular forms of human associations. Nevertheless, the attempts to ground a political theory on overarching universal principles is in contradiction with the plurality of social, cultural, political, religious interpretative standpoints in the contemporary world. Is dissent cosmopolitan? Is there a legacy of dissent for a theory of cosmopolitanism? This book is a comparative, historical analysis of dissident thought and practice for contemporary debates on cosmopolitanism. Divided into two parts, the editors and contributors explore the contribution of ‘paradigmatic’ dissidents like Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Havel, Sakharov, Mandela, Liu Xiaobo, Aung San Suu Kyi towards a post-universalist cosmopolitan theory. Part Two examines the inherent cosmopolitanism of the seemingly ‘peripheral’ dissent of contemporary forms of protests, resistance, direct action like NO TAV movement and Occupy Wall Street. A timely book which allows for a much needed new engagement in contemporary debates of cosmopolitanism, we learn how practical resistance to totalizing/hegemonic claims is generated, and how dissident thinking might contribute to new, enriched ways of conceiving the non-totalizing foundations of cosmopolitanism. An innovative look at what lessons can scholars of cosmopolitanism learn from dissent/dissident movements, and what the role of dissent in cosmopolitan democracy could be.

This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book In some way or form, this book is unassumingly a nicer and a more logical organization and interpretation of compounding existing religious writings from a variety of walks of life. Herein, they are presented as proof drawn synthetically from those multitude of intellectual sources written over the last 4,000 years evidencing that the central figure of the persona translated as the reincarnation of almighty God of Israel himself in Christian literature is simply another Extraterrestrial Alien visiting Planet Earth for a purpose. Another visitor just like those well-known Anunnaki, the Elohim, the Nephilim, the Sons of God, the Watchers, the renegade Angels or other entities over several millennia ego. And, in the many ways how it is related to the current humanity's most pressing problem of whether we are alone and unique in the Cosmos as it is linked to the much-witnessed UFO encounters phenomenon. It also well outlined the latent consequences resulting from what is presented as postulate. About the Author Raphael-Seraphin Kutota Basisa currently resides in Lynn, Massachusetts. He would consider himself a futurist, a researcher, a world’s concerned citizen, and a great human being. He is a chemical engineer by training and earned an MBA and an ABD in Applied Management and Public Policy. He has written and published several technical and non-technical documents, commentaries, articles, papers, and other books along the subjects of his expertise. He believes in extraterrestrial life in regard to religion. Basisa is a person whose research helped to recognize early on the theory that we are all descendants of Extraterrestrials and Cosmic religiosity should be recognized in modern theology.
