Book excerpt: Educational literature indicates that approximately half of all doctoral students persist to degree completion. The literature indicates persistence rates among the social sciences are even lower. This study examined factors influencing doctoral student persistence in education administration programs. Tinto's theory of graduate student persistence framed four research questions: Do the demographics of doctoral students persisting to degree completion in education administration differ from those not completing their programs? Do doctoral students in education administration programs articulate experiences of academic integration as influencing their persistence? Do doctoral students in education administration programs articulate experiences of social integration as influencing their persistence? Do doctoral students in education administration programs attribute commitments to external obligations as influencing their persistence? The design of the study was interpretive and exploratory in nature and utilized constant comparative analysis techniques. Survey and interview were used to collect participant views of doctoral student experiences. Participants (N = 30) for the study included those who had completed their dissertations (N = 15) and those who were All But Dissertation (N = 15) and attended two comprehensive research universities in the southeastern United States. The major findings from the study were that (a) no differences existed in demographics reported by degree completers and ABO participants; (b) degree completers described experiences related to academic integration, social integration, and external obligations as having sustaining effects on their perSistence to degree completion; (c) and ABO participants described experiences related to academic integration, social integration, and external obligations as having restraining effects on their perSistence. Findings indicated that students having positive academic and social integration experiences and the ability to negotiate shared responsibility for duties related to external obligations were more likely to complete their programs. Findings also supported that students having negative academic and social integration experiences and an inability to negotiate shared responsibility for duties related to external obligations were less likely to complete their programs.

Book excerpt: Student persistence, which is student's progress towards graduation through achieving or meeting educational goals, is widely studied. The focus of a majority of the studies on student persistence is on students at the K-12 and undergraduate levels. Furthermore, while persistence of graduate student population was studied, such studies focused on domestic student, and not international students. International graduate students are important for educational institutions. The pedagogical and financial impact of international graduate students on educational institutions is significant, yet their retention and persistence is understudied. The current study was an attempt to enhance our understanding surrounding student retention and persistence. Research on student retention and persistence is greatly influenced by the works of Vincent Tinto, one of the earliest researchers to incorporate sociological research into their work on student persistence and, who in the early 1970s, developed what is probably the very first predictive model of student persistence. Tinto's (1993) model of student persistence, known as Tinto's Institutional Departure Model (TIDM), suggests that a student's integration into the academic and social fabric of the educational institution (i.e., academic integration and social integration) predicts their persistence. Subsequent research, across different student populations and at different levels of education, has shown that academic integration and social integration play an important role in determining persistence of students, validating the core finding of Tinto's model. Student persistence decisions are complex and are influenced by a variety of factors. For example, finance plays an important role in not only access to education but also influences academic integration and social integration. This was highlighted by the works of Pascarella and Terenzini (2005), and Cabrera and colleagues (Cabrera, Nora, & Castañeda, 1992; Nora, Cabrera, Hagedorn, & Pascarella, 1996) who have shown that while financial aid can help, the effectiveness of the assistantship varies, depending on the type of financial aid awarded to individual students.

Book excerpt: The foundational theory on student retention was presented 30 years ago, and since then researchers have queried learners about how universities affect their decision to withdraw or persist. Absent from the previous literature is research which explores the personal and institutional factors related to persistence of a doctoral learner's ability to complete their degree in online asynchronous programs. Many factors have been found to influence the decision of a learner to continue or to quit pursuing a doctorate degree. This phenomenological study began with four key research questions, related to personal and institutional factors, which guided the research and defined the study. This study utilized the phenomenological research described by Moustakas and the modification of the model of Van Kamm's research method of analysis to explore the contributing personal and institutional factors related to the persistence of a doctoral learner's ability to graduate in an online asynchronous program. Eight learners who graduated from asynchronous online programs participated in this research. The analysis of the raw data was conducted by utilizing the modified van Kaam technique. Ten themes emerged from the analysis. The participants stated that situational and dispositional factors such as intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, spirituality, and situational factors were more related to their ability to persist to graduate in an asynchronous online doctoral program. This study may assist university administrators, current learners, and future students with identifying factors that can enhance persistence to graduate and evidence-based interventions that may improve retention.

Book excerpt: Involving two or more academic subjects, interdisciplinary studies aim to blend together broad perspectives, knowledge, skills, and epistemology in an educational setting. By focusing on topics or questions too broad for a single discipline to cover, these studies strive to draw connections between seemingly different fields. Cases on Interdisciplinary Research Trends in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics: Studies on Urban Classrooms presents research and information on implementing and sustaining interdisciplinary studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for students and classrooms in an urban setting. This collection of research acts as a guide for researchers and professionals interested in improving learning outcomes for their students.

Book excerpt: Collaborative approaches to special education that seek to provide innovative, creative, and novel ways to disrupt current structures and practices are necessary to move the field towards a more inclusive model for educating students with disabilities. Multiple professionals are involved in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, extending the pool of stakeholders in special education far beyond the special education teacher. Achieving a strong understanding between the multiple professions involved in IEP development and implementation will improve data-based individualization, the fidelity of program implementation, and the sustainability of practices and services. The Handbook of Research on Interdisciplinary Preparation for Equitable Special Education explores and highlights interdisciplinary personnel preparation to advance special education and enhance outcomes for students with disabilities. This book also provides theories and frameworks, examples, and discussions around innovations and lessons learned from interdisciplinary preparation programs and practices. Covering key topics such as educator preparation models, equity, diverse students, and educator competencies, this premier reference source is ideal for administrators, principals, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

Book excerpt: For the past 40 years, American college and university administrators have registered record low retention and high attrition rates. Education experts and researchers have claimed the problems are embarrassing to the United States’ higher education institutions. Based on the problems, graduate school administrators are unable to graduate doctoral students at U.S. population growth rates. Currently, only 1% of Americans hold PhD degrees. Compared to other industrialized countries such as Japan, China, and Mexico, the rate is insignificant. The purpose of the mixed methods case study was to investigate if there was a relationship between motivation and retention rates at the doctoral level. The goal of the study was to determine if extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors and constraints were associated with persistence in a graduate doctoral program. Data were collected from 193 doctoral and graduate students for the quantitative study, while 20 doctoral and graduate students participated in a qualitative study followed by a thorough semi-structured interview. Inductive and deductive analyses were performed, transcribed, and opened, while axial coding provided emergent themes and sub-themes. The research showed a direct relationship between financial implications, attrition and retention rates, and motivation in doctoral level students. Many doctoral students believed the primary reason they were unable to pursue doctoral programs was based on financial hardship. Doctoral students who responded to the survey added that motivation was the second significant variable that helped them continue their studies.

Book excerpt: Despite considerable research that has provided a better understanding of the challenges of doctoral education, it remains the case that only 57% of all doctoral students will complete their programs. This groundbreaking volume sheds new light on determinants for doctoral student success and persistence by examining the socialization and developmental experiences of students through multiple lenses of individual, disciplinary, and institutional contexts. This book comprehensively critiques existing models and views of doctoral student socialization, and offers a new model that incorporates concepts of identity development, adult learning, and epistemological development. The contributors bring the issues vividly to life by creating five student case studies that, throughout the book, progressively illustrate key stages and typical events of the socialization process. These fictional narratives crystallize how particular policies and practices can assist or impede the formation of future scholars. The book concludes by developing practical recommendations for doctoral students themselves, but most particularly for faculty, departments, universities, and external agencies concerned with facilitating doctoral student success.
