Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perrin's History of Illinois This is an attempt to present the outline of Illinois history in such a form as to furnish a system, which will secure to the student a convenient index for the further ance of his studies and will enable the historian to avail himself of the groundwork upon which he may build. Quite a number of voluminous historical works, contain ing data concerning the various events which have trans pired in this state, have been issued and these may be con sulted for detailed information. This work aims simply at a brief arrangement, in systematic and chronological form, of leading events, in order to furnish a convenient indicator for those who are desirous of being assisted in pursuing their investigations systematically. The task of writing a full and detailed account of the happenings, which have occurred upon the soil of Illinois within the last two hundred and thirty-two years, will be left to more ambitious historical compilers and commentators. The ambition of the author of this work will be realized and gratified if he may succeed in infusing a spirit of re search into others'by indicating to them'the' importance of the history of our state through this brief recital. Hence, it has been deemed adequate to the scope of this work to give solely that important chain of incidents, which in itself is sufficient to enlist the attention of those Who are interested in the history of a people who have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Illinois It is believed that teachers who use the book will be able to make the study of Illinois history more interesting and instructive if they correlate it with the history of the United States, using the history of the nation as a background for the study of state history. It will be easy to show pupils how the state history fits into the story 'of the nation, especially in chapters of state history on such subjects as Joliet and Marquette, La Salle, George Rogers Clark, The French and Indian War, Slavery in Illinois, Railroads, lincoln-douglas Debates, and Outbreak of the Civil War. It is wonderful to think that long before Rome was built, or the Pyramids rear-cd their lof-ty heads by the banks of the Nile, there may have been dense-ly crowd-cd cit-ies all over this fair land; and that on the fruit-ful plains of Ill-in ois, men and women, by thou-sands, lived and loved, suf-fer-ed and died, of whose ex-ist-ence there is scarcely the faint-est trace. All this seems very strange; but the men who tell us these things are much too wise and care-ful to make such state-ments with-out good rea-son. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Illinois: From Earliest Settlement to the Present Time The want here indicated is now about being sup plied; and, as the task of doing so is no light or superficial one, the publishers have given into the hands of the two gentlemen whose names appear in the title-page, the work of preparing a series of cabi net histories, embracing a volume for each state in the Union. Of their ability to perform this well, we need not speak. They are no strangers in the literary World. What they undertake the public may rest assured will be performed thoroughly; and that no sectarian, sectional, or party feelings will bias their judgment, or lead them to violate the integrity of history. The importance of a series of state histories like those now commenced, can scarcely be estimated. Being condensed as carefully as accuracy and interest of narrative will permit, the size and price of the volumes will bring them within the reach of every family in the country, thus making them home-read ing books for old and young. Each individual will. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of the Illinois Most of us think of the Revolution as being fought only in the Colonies stretched along the Atlantic Seaboard. Yet out in what is now Illinois and Indiana a frontiersman by the name of George Rogers Clark carried on a campaign for American supremacy that for enterprise, daring and determination, is equal to any in our history. To his foresight and success is due the fact that the great country lying west of Pittsburgh, north of the Ohio and stretching to the Mississippi, was saved for the Colonies, and did not fall to the lot of Canada under the Treaty of Paris.
