Book excerpt: Perhaps it's Love, the original element, which gives this book its name, concerns four young adults that play a vital role to follow their hearts; sometimes without adequate preparation, or the appropriate equipment as a test of the will. This of course, nearly crushes each person's spirit. In one-way or another, each youth is linked to each other (ages between 18 and 21). The novel is primarily concerned with choices in love, in some cases a manifesto about its dangers. At the end it, it must be said, nothing was tolerable but the best. No one was without sin. Four youths [l96768], while being in the process of growth get stirred up quite a lot, some even lost in the commotion of events, while feelings become nourished and intensified, all aching for love, in their own way. A lesson might well be learned if they can only harness their crying hearts; but first unhappiness has to be conquered (part of the theme and plot). The story has a shy-charm to it, a quick gaiety, and objective tenderness. It is dramatic; it has an exploring inner mind. Many parts of this book are based on actual events, transformed into historical fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to analytical interpretation of seminal writings and thinkers in the history of political thought, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Bible, Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli, Bacon, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Tocqueville, Marx, and Nietzsche. Chronologically arranged, each chapter in the book is devoted to the work of a single thinker. The selected texts together engage with 2000 years of debate on fundamental questions, which include: What is the purpose of political life? What is the good life, for us as individuals, and for us as a political community? What is justice? What is a right? Do human beings have rights? What kinds of human virtues are there and which regimes best promote them? The difficulty of accessing the texts included in this volume is the result not only of their subtlety but also of the dramatic change in everyday life. The authors shed light on the texts' vocabulary and complexities of thought and help students understand and weigh the various interpretations of each philosopher's thought. • Accessible interpretive essays on the greatest texts in the history of political thought, from Plato to Nietzsche. • Includes key passage plus a succinct discussion that glosses the text, examines later-day interpretations, and guides students in forming their own interpretations. • Allows students to learn from, rather than only about, each thinker, and to apply their thought to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a meditation on the idea of Love. There is a long, arduous ideational search that the main character undertakes, which takes him from the depths of the subconscious to the heights of heaven in order to find the true purpose of Love. He is aided in this search by a rather shadowy figure that seems to be someone he has been in love with for a very long time. He will eventually reach the conclusion that Love, when all is said and done, is really Love of the higher Self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bodies and Machines is a striking and persuasive examination of the body-machine complex and its effects on the modern American cultural imagination. Bodies and Machines, first published in 1992, explores the links between techniques of representation and social and scientific technologies of power in a wide range of realist and naturalist discourses and practices. Seltzer draws on realist and naturalist writing, such as the work of Hawthorne and Henry James, and the discourses which inform it: from scouting manuals and the programmes of systematic management to accounts of sexual biology and the rituals of consumer culture. He explores other mass-produced and mass-consumed cultural forms, including visual representations such as composite photographs, scale models, and the astonishing iconography of standardization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At first listen, music is conspicuously absent from Somaliland's public soundscapes. The lingering effects of a war that devastated the artistic community and the increasing presence of Salafist groups, which see music as incompatible with Islamic principles, have muted musical practice. Nonetheless, as Christina Woolner undertook research in postwar peacebuilding in Somaliland's capital, Hargeysa, she continually heard snippets of songs. Many of these, she learned, were about love. In a time and region riddled with precarity, hees jacayl permits singers to "sing from the heart," a mode of voicing songs that Woolner calls envocalization, which allows the possibility of dareen-wadaang (feeling sharing). Despite their intense intimacy, that is, hees jacayl transcend the connection between the lover and the beloved, becoming also, perhaps paradoxically, an outward-facing, unifying force that powerfully draws together those "suffering" from love, poets, composers, singers, and listeners, in both private and public spaces. Taking us from 1950s recordings preserved on dusty cassettes to contemporary, often improvisatory performances in a scandalous venue where the author herself eventually performs, Woolner offers an understanding of love songs across time and space that opens new realms of possibility, for relating to others and for local reconciliation, which are otherwise closed off by overwhelming conditions of precarity"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17th century writer Thomas Traherne is increasingly being recognised and studied as a theologian as well as a poet. The discovery, in 1997, announced by the author of this volume, of five new prose works and a poetic work has given huge impetus to the study of Traherne in literature and theology. This affordable, concise introduction to Traherne's life and work concerns Traherne primarily as a theologian and places him in an historical and intellectual context he has thus far lacked. It demonstrates his distinctive contribution to Anglican theology. Consisting of a 10,000 word introductory essay and biography it is followed by extracts from Traherne's work under the following headings: Creatures and Powers, Holiness and Happiness, Sin and Salvation, Christian Liberty, Advice on Ministry, and Prayers.
