Download or read book Reactive Inhibition as a Measure of Selective Attention written by Mary Sue Burns and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of reading disabled and control subjects on a continuous performance task of vigilance. The test was designed to explore the hypothesis that reading disabled children manifest a deficit in selective attention related to reading acquisition. It was hypothesized that children who attend vigilantly to the long and boring task, will exhibit a phenomenon labeled "reactive inhibition". Reactive inhibition is defined as systematic decrements in response accuracy to tasks requiring sustained attention over a period of time (i.e. rates and types of errors are stable throughout the first part of the task, with significant increases toward the end). Children who do not selectively attend to relevant stimuli, will not exhibit decrements in response accuracy, rather they will demonstrate different types and rates of errors on the continuous performance task throughout the entire trial. Forty-two subjects, ages eight through thirteen (Xå CA = 11.4), were selected from two local school districts. All had been referred for special education services, however all were not deemed eligible according to Washington State guidelines (WAC 392-171). Criteria for this study did not include placement in resource rooms or self-contained classrooms. Group placement (for this study) was determined by reading grade equivalent scores on the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-educational Battery and full scale IQ scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Subtest scores on the WISC-R were obtained to differentiate the two reading disabled groups. All three groups were equated for age and full scale IQ. Each subject was administered the continuous performance task once, under standardized administration procedures, in their home school. Data collection was accomplished with a computer measuring response time to .01ths of a second for each response made by the child to a stimulus letter presented at one second intervals on the Apple II computer screen. An examination of the continuous performance task results with a 3x3 analysis of variance for two different types of errors; (1) delayed responses and (2) commission and omission errors was performed. Results reached significance (p
