Book excerpt: A viscous/inviscid interaction method for predicting the effect of viscosity on the performance of wetted and cavitating propulsors is presented. The emphasis is placed on steady wetted and cavitating propulsor flows. A three-dimensional low order potential based boundary element method is strongly coupled with a two dimensional integral boundary layer analysis method based on the strip theory assumption. The influence of viscosity on the outer inviscid flow is modeled through the wall transpiration model by distributing "blowing" sources on the propulsor blade and trailing wake surfaces. The boundary layer edge velocities are expressed as the sum of the inviscid edge velocity and a correction which depends only on the boundary layer variables. The influence of outer potential flow on the inner boundary layer flow is considered through the edge velocities. In the case of sheet cavitation, a "thin" cavity approach is employed and the viscous/inviscid interaction method is applied on the blade surface underneath the cavity. On the cavity surface, the friction force coefficient is forced to be zero. Numerical predictions by the present viscous/inviscid interaction method are presented for open, ducted, and water-jet propulsors. For water-jet propulsors, the flow is solved in an iterative manner by solving the rotor and stator problems separately and by considering the time-averaged effects of one component on the other. Predicted forces, pressure distributions, and boundary layer variables are compared with those predicted by other numerical methods and experimental measurements.

Book excerpt: In this study, a robust and efficient flow separation model coupled with the viscous/inviscid interaction method (VII) is presented to predict the performance of propulsors with blunt trailing edges (TEs) in steady and fully wetted flow. The VII method is used to solve the flow around hydrofoils, three-dimensional wings and propellers with sharp TEs. The pressure distributions and open water characteristics are compared with either Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations or with existing experimental data. It is shown that compared with the potential flow methods, the 3D VII method can improve the accuracy of the results significantly. A flow separation model is proposed so that the VII method can be applied to hydrofoils, ducts and propellers with blunt TEs. The criteria of zero lift and zero moment are adopted to determine the end of the extension, and flow separation criteria are used to determine the starting points on either side of the section. The pressure distributions and skin friction along the hydrofoils and ducts correlate well with those from the RANS method. The thrust and torque of the propeller agree much better with experimental measurements when the extension is determined from this model rather than choosing random locations. This model requires much less computational effort while preserving high accuracy, and thus can be used reliably in designing and analyzing hydrofoils, open and ducted propellers with blunt TEs. The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and computationally efficient tool to model the effects of the viscosity on the propulsor performance and pressure distributions for engineering purpose, and also to extend the capability of the VII method in predicting the flows around hydrofoil, duct and propeller sections with blunt TEs

This thesis presents MATLAB(registered) executables that interface with a modified version of XFOIL for determining the minimum pressure of a foil operating in an inviscid fluid. The code creates minimum pressure envelopes, similar to those published by Brockett (1965). XFOIL, developed by Mark Drela in 1986, is a design system for Low Reynolds Number Airfoils that combines the speed and accuracy of high-order panel methods with fully-coupled viscous/inviscid interaction. XFOIL was altered such that it reads in command line arguments that provide operating instructions, rather than operator interaction via menu options. In addition, all screen output and plotting functions were removed. These modifications removed XFOIL's user interface, and created a black box version of XFOIL that would perform the desired calculations and write the output to a file. These modifications allow rapid execution and interface by an external program, such as MATLAB. In addition, XFOIL's algorithms provide a significant improvement in the accuracy of minimum pressure prediction over the method published by Brockett. Development of the modified XFOIL and MATLAB interface contained in this thesis is intended for future interface with Open-source Propeller Design and Analysis Program (OpenProp). OpenProp is an open source MATLAB-based suite of propeller design tools. Currently, OpenProp performs parametric analysis and single propeller design, but does not perform cavitation analysis. Minimum pressure envelopes provide the propeller designer information about operating conditions encountered by propellers. The code developed in this thesis allows the designer to rapidly assess cavitation conditions while in the design phase, and make modifications to propeller blade design in order to optimize cavitation performance. A methodology for design is discussed outlining future integration with OpenProp.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.
