Book excerpt: Total hip replacement (THR), or total hip arthroplasty, is a common orthopedic procedure used to restore function to patients with damaged or degenerated hips and chronic pain. Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is another option for treating degenerative hip disease, particularly in younger patients with active lifestyles. During THR, the head of the femur is removed and replaced with a prosthesis that has a protruding ball. The ball fits into an acetabular cup that is secured to the pelvis with cement or by promoting bone ingrowth. The inside of the cup may contain a lining to reduce friction and decrease wear. Different models of hip prostheses are comprised of varying combinations of metal, ceramic or polyethylene balls, cups and liners. Implant type and mode of fixation are based on patient needs and surgeon preference. During HRA, a metal cap is placed on the femoral head to cover damaged bone and a metal shell is placed in the acetabulum. MOM hip implants, made of stainless steel, titanium or cobalt chrome, may erode and gradually release metal ions into the bloodstream resulting in toxicity. Due to adverse reactions to metal debris, MOM hips have also been associated with high failure rates and surgical revisions. This review evaluates the comparative clinical and cost-effectiveness of MOM total hip replacement versus MOP (cross-linked polyethylene) total hip replacement. The comparative clinical effectiveness of hip resurfacing versus total hip replacement in adults is also examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribo-Behaviors of Biomaterials and Their Applications enables the reader to make an informed choice in the selection of biomaterials that aid the creation of safe and long-lasting surgical devices. Looking at metals, ceramics, and polymers with craniofacial, cardiovascular, spinal, dentistry, and orthopedic applications, this book is an essential guide to tribology in biomaterials. Handling wear within biodevices is a pressing issue due to the continuous friction and corrosion within the body. It is further complicated by the involvement of body fluids, which can lead to revision surgery to relieve pain. In order to lessen this, engineers can choose a biomaterial better suited to the application. Including detailed discussion of the properties of each biomaterial, this book covers the behaviors of implants, along with the methods and standards applied to devices. It has chapters on metals, ceramics, and polymers. It also covers body fluid lubrication and the physiological effects they have on implants, along with their tribo-corrosion behaviors. This book will be of interest to engineers and researchers in the field of biomechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, and manufacturing engineering, alongside all those researching tribology and nanocomposites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book was to offer an overview of recent insights into the current state of arthroplasty. The tremendous long term success of Sir Charnley's total hip arthroplasty has encouraged many researchers to treat pain, improve function and create solutions for higher quality of life. Indeed and as described in a special chapter of this book, arthroplasty is an emerging field in the joints of upper extremity and spine. However, there are inborn complications in any foreign design brought to the human body. First, in the chapter on infections we endeavor to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date analysis and description of the management of this difficult problem. Second, the immune system is faced with a strange material coming in huge amounts of micro-particles from the tribology code. Therefore, great attention to the problem of aseptic loosening has been addressed in special chapters on loosening and on materials currently available for arthroplasty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook describes several current trends in the development of bioceramics and biocomposites for clinical use in the repair, remodelling, and regeneration of bone tissue. Comprehensive coverage of these materials allows fundamental aspects of the science and engineering to be seen in close relation to the clinical performance of dental and orthopaedic implants. Bioceramics and biocomposites appear to be the most dynamic area of materials development for both tissue engineering and implantable medical devices. Almost all medical specialties will continue to benefit from these developments, but especially dentistry and orthopaedics. In this Handbook, leading researchers describe the use of bionanomaterials to create new functionalities when interfaced with biological molecules or structures. Also described are technologies for bioceramics and biocomposites processing in order to fabricate medical devices for clinical use. Another important section of the book is dedicated to tissue regeneration with development of new matrices. A targeted or personalized treatment device reduces drug consumption and treatment expenses, resulting in benefits to the patient and cost reductions for public health systems. This authoritative reference on the state-of-the-art in the development and use of bioceramics and biocomposites can also serve as the basis of instructional course lectures for audiences ranging from advanced undergraduate students to post-graduates in materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering.
