Book excerpt: The communications based in LEO constellations show to be an adequate option to achieve a worldwide communication network. The demand of communication services in broadband (data, voice, and video) is growing and the solutions of wireless access are attractive since they offer to the user an unrestricted communication. Within this research, some important aspects from networks in LEO satellite systems are analyzed, principally, the long distance traffic; route using ISLs and. the most recently developed concept for global communication, being ATM selected like switching principle therefore the routing in the network will be defined over the virtual path (VP) concept. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the performance and analice the behaviour of a satellite communication system, introducing variant traffic according to the model of positional traffic over a topology scheme with priorities of end to end routes, keeping the QoS required and maintaining link continuity in the presence of topological changes. This investigation work can be divided into two main parts: the first part researches on the real scenario of LEO satellite networks. The characteristics of Iridium system and the concept of positional traffic behaviour are investigated. The second part deals witli the specific problem of searching for communication paths through a dynamic network, based on the concept developed in the first part of the work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellite Network Robust QoS-aware Routing presents a novel routing strategy for satellite networks. This strategy is useful for the design of multi-layered satellite networks as it can greatly reduce the number of time slots in one system cycle. The traffic prediction and engineering approaches make the system robust so that the traffic spikes can be handled effectively. The multi-QoS optimization routing algorithm can satisfy various potential user requirements. Clear and sufficient illustrations are also presented in the book. As the chapters cover the above topics independently, readers from different research backgrounds in constellation design, multi-QoS routing, and traffic engineering can benefit from the book. Fei Long is a senior engineer at Beijing R&D Center of 54th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation.

Book excerpt: We are delighted to introduce the proceedings of the 13th edition of the 2020 European Alliance for Innovation (EAI) International Conference on Mobile Multimedia Communications (MOBIMEDIA). This conference has brought researchers, developers and practitioners around the world who are leveraging and developing multimedia coding, mobile communications and networking fields. Developing and leveraging multimedia coding, mobile communications and networking fields requires adopting an interdisciplinary approach where multimedia, networking and physical layer issues are addressed jointly. Basic theories, key technologies and Artificial Intelligence for next-generations wireless communications, intelligent technologies for subspace learning and clustering of high-dimensional data, security and safety, communication networks and coding analysis, electromagnetic and media access control, D2D and IoT, multimedia platform and analysis, new energy and smart city, vision and images analysis, systems and applications, case studies and prediction and educational application are research challenges that need to be carefully examined when designing new mobile media architectures. We also need to put a great effort in designing applications that take into account the way the user perceives the overall quality of the provided service. Within this scope, the MOBIMEDIA 2020 was intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia to study new technologies, applications and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications.

Private LAN connection facilities could also be made available to the corporate user, offering the possibility to establish broadband internet access within a closed user group. Such a scenario could be of interest to the financial sector. By gathering the knowledge and experiences of well-known satellite systems experts from different parts of Europe this comprehensive volume provides detailed analysis on technical aspects for interconnecting local area network using satellite. Starting from traffic source modelling for different types of applications and services to different types of transmission techniques and networking functions for supporting such services, different case studies are presented to analyse the performance of such technologies. By providing an insight to current and future developments in satellite communications systems and by covering a broad.

Book excerpt: Dynamic Routing in Broadband Networks focuses on routing in broadband networks based on MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). The routing methods are based on the theory of Markov decision processes which forms a very accurate framework for on-line route optimization. The author shows the issue of performance optimization and scalability with respect to dynamic routing of logical connections in broadband networks. The methods used are applicable to routing virtual path connections (VPC) and virtual channel connections (VCC) in ATM networks as well as label switched paths (LSP) in MPLS networks. Simulation results and a performance comparison with reference routing are given for the different schemes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential threat posed by Leonid meteroids to orbiting spacecraft over the next several years calls for new dynamic mitigation strategies to assist the satellite community in reducing the danger to its vehicles. This book offers deliberate dynamic mitigation strategies to complement the traditional shielding strategies, providing mission operators additional ways to decrease the danger. Five different attitude control and orbit maneuvering options are examined in detail. The information is presented in algorithmic form to allow technically competent, but meteoroid inexperienced, operators to easily understand the phenomena, assess the danger, and implement procedures. Although general in scope, the book emphasizes the Leonid meteor events of the 1998-2002 timeframe.

Book excerpt: During recent years a great deal of progress has been made in performance modelling and evaluation of the Internet, towards the convergence of multi-service networks of diverging technologies, supported by internetworking and the evolution of diverse access and switching technologies. The 44 chapters presented in this handbook are revised invited works drawn from PhD courses held at recent HETNETs International Working Conferences on Performance Modelling and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Networks. They constitute essential introductory material preparing the reader for further research and development in the field of performance modelling, analysis and engineering of heterogeneous networks and of next and future generation Internets. The handbook aims to unify relevant material already known but dispersed in the literature, introduce the readers to unfamiliar and unexposed research areas and, generally, illustrate the diversity of research found in the high growth field of convergent heterogeneous networks and the Internet. The chapters have been broadly classified into 12 parts covering the following topics: Measurement Techniques; Traffic Modelling and Engineering; Queueing Systems and Networks; Analytic Methodologies; Simulation Techniques; Performance Evaluation Studies; Mobile, Wireless and Ad Hoc Networks, Optical Networks; QoS Metrics and Algorithms; All IP Convergence and Networking; Network Management and Services; and Overlay Networks.

Book excerpt: Multi-media networks based on ATM LAN technology can provide integrated transmission of voice, data and visual information direct to the workstation. Such networks are of strategic importance to organisations which depend upon electronic transactions. The smooth operation of these networks is therefore of critical importance. The aim of this special theme is to investigate the state of corporate networks and provide a view of how emerging new technology will improve communications efficiency. Book excerpt: Routing and Quality-of-Service in Broadband LEO Satellite Networks describes mechanisms for supporting Quality-of-Service (QoS) strategies that consider properties of low earth orbit satellite networks and their effects on link handover. A graph model representing the dynamic topology of a satellite constellation is introduced based on a new parameter, lifetime. Novel routing and resource reservation algorithms as well as connection admission control strategies are proposed to minimize the handover blocking probability while maintaining QoS requirements. The author also discusses the roles of satellites in an all-IP mobile network architecture and the problems of mobility, QoS provisioning, and routing. This work will be of particular interest to researchers and professionals working on mobility networking in next generation networks.
