This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance tests using an 11 kW single cylinder diesel engine were made to determine the effects of three different micronized coal-fuel oil slurries being considered as alternative fuels. Slurries containing 20, 32, and 40%-wt micronized raw coal in No. 2 fuel oil were used. Results are presented indicating the changes in the concentrations of SO/sub X/ and NO/sub X/ in the exhaust, exhaust opacity, power and efficiency, and in wear rates relative to operation on fuel oil No. 2. The engine was operated for 10 h at full load and 1400 rpm on al fuels except the 40%-wt slurry. This test was discontinued because of extremely poor performance.

Book excerpt: It has been difficult to obtain stable experimental slurries of coal or solvent-refined coal for testing in diesel engines. Attempts to burn the 40 percent by weight raw coal-fuel oil slurry were hampered from the outset. First the transfer pump would not deliver the slurry to the injection pump. This problem was overcome by raising the slurry storage tank to increase the positive head on the pump inlet. With the engine running on the slurry blow-by of gases into the crank case increased considerably; the engine ran erratically; and when operating under its own power produced approximately 20 percent of what was expected. Thus, the test was ended after one hour of operation instead of ten hours as was the case with the 20 and 32 percent slurries. The immediate loss of power is thought to be a result of poor penetration, dispersion, and atomization of the injected fuel. A request to revise the scope of the work so that an investigation of this power loss can replace the work required to operate on the 40 percent slurries has been submitted. Inspection of this test engine indicates wear occurs at an excessive rate, although thermodynamic changes are not drastic with 20 and 32 percent by weight coal in the slurries.

Download or read book Characterization of Coal-water Slurry Fuel Sprays from Diesel Engine Injectors written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to characterize coal-water slurry fuel sprays from diesel engine injectors. Since the combustion event is a strong function of the fuel spray, full characterization of the spray is a necessity for successful engine design and for modeling of the combustion process. Two experimental facilities were used at TAMU to study the injection of coal slurry fuels. The first experimental facility incorporates General Electric locomotive engine components (injection pump, fuel line, and nozzle) and a specially designed diaphragm to separate the abrasive coal slurry fuel from the moving parts of the pump. The second experimental facility is based on an accumulator injector from General Electric. Instrumentation includes instantaneous needle lift and fuel line pressure. A pressurized visualization chamber was used to provide a spray environment which simulated the engine gas density and permitted the use of spray diagnostic techniques. The study was divided into two phases: (1) overall characterization of the spray, and (2) detailed droplet size and size distribution characterization. In addition to this overall characterization of the spray, the second phase of this study characterized the details of the atomization quality.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the sponsorship of the US Department of Energy, Morgantown Energy Technology Center, GE Transportation System has been conducting a proof of concept program to use coal water slurry (CWS) fuel to power a diesel engine locomotive since 1988. As reported earlier [1], a high pressure electronically controlled accumulator injector using a diamond compact insert nozzle was developed for this project. The improved reliability and durability of this new FIE allowed for an improved and more thorough study of combustion of CWS fuel in a diesel engine. It was decided to include a diesel pilot fuel injector in the combustion system mainly due to engine start and low load operation needs. BKM, Inc. of San Diego, CA was contracted to develop the electronic diesel fuel pilot/starting FIE for the research engine. As a result, the experimental combustion study was very much facilitated due to the ability of changing pilot/CWS injection timings and quantities without having to stop the engine. Other parameters studied included combustion chamber configuration (by changing CWS fuel injector nozzle hole number/shape/angle), as well as injection pressure. The initial phase of this combustion study is now complete. The results have been adopted into the design of a 12 cylinder engine FIE, to be tested in 1992. This paper summarizes the main findings of this study.
