Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-hop wireless networks have been extensively studied and are widely deployed for various networks. These networks include mobile Ad-hoc networks, sensor networks, mesh networks, space communication networks and delay-tolerance networks. In multi-hop wireless networks the end-to-end performance, in terms of throughput and delay, degrades exponentially with hop counts. Several factors contribute to this degradation including network topology, node distance, media access control protocol, application and the source and aggregate traffic characteristics. In this thesis we studied the impact of various factors that determine the performance of an end-to-end connection for various applications in multi-hop wireless networks. We have developed various simulation models to study the dynamics of the above mentioned factors for different media access control including IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.11s and TDMA under different traffic source conditions, such as constant bit rate, file transfer protocol and general traffic. Our study shows that multi-hop networks have significant limitations for delay-sensitive traffic and significant limitation in quality of service provisioning.

Book excerpt: In these exciting times of quotidianly progressing developments in communication techniques, where more than ever in the history of a technological progress, society's reliance on communication networks for medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours dominates the human's everyday life, the optical networks are certainly one of the most promising and challenging networking options. Since their commercial arrival in the nineties, they have fundamentally changed the way of dealing with traffic engineering by removing bandwidth bottlenecks and eliminating delays. Today, after the revolutionary bandwidth expansion, the networking functionality migrates more and more to the optical layer, and the need to establish fast wavelength circuits and capacity-on-demand for the higher-layer networks, in particular data networks based on Internet Protocol (IP), has become one of the central networking issues for the new century. The unifying trends toward configurable all-optical network infrastructure open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices dealing with networks' interoperability and common platforms for control and management. The Fifth Working Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling, held in the Austrian capital Vienna, February 5-7, 2001, aims at presenting the most recent progress in optical communication techniques, new technologies, standardisation process, emerging markets and carriers. A short look at the Table of Contents of this book tells us, in fact, that this year's conference program reflects the current state of the art precisely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The huge bandwidth of optical fiber was recognized back in the 1970s during the early development of fiber optics technology. For the last two decades, the capacity of experimental and deployed systems has been increasing at a rate of 100-fold each decade - a rate exceeding the increase of integrated circuit speeds. Today, optical communication in the public communication networks has developed from the status of a curiosity into being the dominant technology. Various great challenges arising from the deployment of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have attracted much effort from many researchers. Indeed, optical networking has been a fertile ground for both theoretical research and experimental studies. This monograph presents contributions from the author's past and ongoing research in the field of optical networking. The ideas presented focus more on graph-theoretical and algorithmic aspects of optical networks. Although this book is limited to the author's own research, there are many outstanding achievements made by other individuals which are cited throughout. Without the inspiration of their efforts, this monograph would never have been possible. Audience: Research workers and professionals from mathematics, computer science, and engineering with an interest in algorithms, graph theory, telecommunications, networking and optical devices.
