Book excerpt: I have given much thought into what this book is about, but have failed to come up with a answer that I, personally, find fitting. Poetry, in itself, is an expression of how people feel or see a related topic or thought, which is usually never exactly like how another might view the same situation. I started these poems when I was going through a hard time in my life, both within the military and persoanlly. The orders I was forced to carry out in the service didn't help either. So, there are other than just war poems in this book. I guess this book is about something and nothing at the same time. Its about all of us and how we see different phases in out lives. I merely have chosen to write about them, hoping I could help others along the way in some manner. After all, it did help me. Tim Segrest

Book excerpt: On the heels of her acclaimed book In an Instant, the #1 New York Times bestseller she wrote with her husband, ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff, and with the same candor and charm, Lee Woodruff now chronicles her life as wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Woodruff’s deeply personal and, at times, uproariously funny stories highlight such universal topics as family, marriage, friends, and how life never seems to go as planned. From raising teenagers (“Now with a boy and girl on the precipice of serious adolescence, the bathroom door is sealed tighter than a government nuclear testing ground”) to how she copes with tragedy (“Swimming surrounds me in the velvet wet of a bluish green world where I can dive deep down and sob with no trace”), Perfectly Imperfect: A Life in Progress is the testimonial of a woman who embraces the chaos of her surroundings, discovers the splendor of life’s flaws, and accepts that perfection is as impossible to achieve as a spotless kitchen floor.

Download or read book Perf written by Chloe Cullen and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We believe perfectionism is the gift of Oscar-winning directors, self-made millionaires, and valedictorians. Comparing ourselves to the flawlessly accomplished reminds us of how imperfect we personally are. We create a negative loop of constant dissatisfaction and distort reality to say we are nothing. And that, my friends, is the glamor of perfectionism. Perf: The Unspoken Flaws in a "Perfect" Culture explores what it really means to live in a culture that encourages "perfection." This book uncovers the truth beneath the romanticized mindset of a perfectionist and their unrelenting quest to do, have, and be the best in the intersection of perfectionism, mental health, and mainstream culture. While Chloe unpacks The American Dream or socioeconomic institutions such as education and market-based economies, she jabs humor at her own perfectionism as a student, employee, family member, and partner. By exploring everything from celebrity examples like Billie Eilish, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Gordon Ramsay, to chicken parmesan recipes, to stand-up comedy, Perf points out where perfectionism becomes dangerous, despite larger cultural messages that tell us we need to earn our worth. If you are tired of seeking out other people's approval or want to laugh a little bit at someone else's perfectionism, this is the book for you.

Book excerpt: The act of imagining lies at the very heart of children's engagements with literature and with the plots and characters they encounter in their favorite stories. The Courage to Imagine is a landmark new study of that fundamental act of imagining. Roni Natov focuses on the ways in which children's imaginative engagement with the child hero figure can open them up to other people's experiences, developing empathy across lines of race, gender and sexuality, as well as helping them to confront and handle traumatic experience safely. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical approaches from the psychological to the cultural and reading a multicultural spectrum of authors, including works by Maya Angelou, Louise Erdrich, Neil Gaiman and Brian Selznick, this is a groundbreaking examination of the nature of imagining for children and re-imagining for the adult writer and illustrator.

Download or read book Perfectly Imperfect written by Harper Sloan and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Standalone novel** Mirror, mirror ... who's the fairest of them all? I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn't grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all 'mean girls.' And those mean girls were right - it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world - and I knew the answer would never be me. The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests. The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward. Well, that's definitely not Willow Tate. No. That will never be me. Because I'm completely imperfect. And ... I hate myself. I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.
