Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perez and Columbus, or the Franciscans in America Capistrano and St. Laurence of Brindisi, cross In' hand, led Christian hosts to victory against infidel armies. Father John Perez was a worthy member of this illustrious order. His was a grand mission, and he proved equal to the occasion that called him forth. He and Columbus were chosen by Divine Providence to find a way on the pathless ocean to the land without a name. They had a common purpose, and they were the principal figures in a providential plan. To them we owe the discovery of America, and one could not have succeeded without the other. The undertaking was entirely Catholic, inspired by Catholic faith, revealed by Catholic genius, supported by a Catholic government and made a success by the bravery of Catholic hearts. The grand design was not less Franciscan, for as the great historian Cesare' Cantu aptly remarks: columbus always found among the children of St. Francis that aid which was constantly denied him by kings. The man' of Providence cannot be separated from the Seraphic Order. He found therein a shelter encouragement, assistance to carry out his design, comfort when persecution came, a peacful death and, in the end, an honored grave. Book excerpt: The first part of this study explores the extent to which Dante’s Divine Comedy contributed to Christopher Columbus’s perception of the cosmos and the eschatological meaning of his journey to what he called an ‘other world.’ The second considers how Italian writers and artists of the late Renaissance and Counter Reformation received the news of the ‘discovery’ and the extent to which they used the figure of Dante and the pseudo-prophecy of the Commedia to interpret its significance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Columbus: Early American History for Children It was a bad time for Columbus to make his proposals, for everybody, including -the king and queen, was thinking only of war. When the king was away with the army, Isabella was busy sending him troops and supplies. They were continually mov ing from place to place, and as Columbus was poor, he could not follow them. He supported himself, as he had done before, in making maps and charts, while the good Juan Perez took care of and educated his son Diego. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America It is, however, wholly aside from my purpose to enter into any controversy over Columbus. It is enough to say that the part he played in the great drama of the discovery and subsequent development of America was no less important than it was dramatic; but, as it is my purpose to show, the real impor tance of his part in the discovery was due not to the man him self, but to those he represented, the company, so to speak, he carried with him to America. Himself a Genoese adven turer, just as ready to sail in the service of France or England as of Portugal or Spain, it so chanced he did sail in the service of Spain, with results for Spain, Europe, the New World, and indeed for the whole human race, to some of which I now propose to refer. It is necessary to say only one word more in regard to the discovery of America. Before doing so I want to repeat and emphasize the belief that nothing which scholars can unearth or critics suggest can, or in my judgment should, detract from the brilliancy of the exploit of Columbus, or the admiration it exacts. He sailed due West into the unknown in order to reach the East. He did it; and he alone did it. The fact that the Norsemen had five centuries before done what he now did in no wise detracts from the splendor of the achievement. The scientific result was his he is entitled to all credit for it. But it was no fair maiden who so eu chained his attention. His features, larger and of a sterner mould than his brother's, were contracted in a frown of intense thought. His eyes, clear and piercing, gazed straight before him, but it is doubt ful if he noticed any of his surroundings. At length the service was at an end, and the congregation prepared to depart. The slight young girl with her companion, a stout, plainly dressed lady of middle age, passed directly in front of the two brothers, the girl with eyes demurely low ered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Columbian Jubilee, or Four Centuries of Catholicity in America, Vol. 1: Being a Historical and Biographical Retrospect From the Landing of Christopher Columbus to the Chicago Catholic Congress of 1893 The honest American citizen possesses two things which he may leave to his children, and these two things are more precious than gold - they are love of God and love of country. The child that learns from his father or mother that he, being a Catholic, can be no alien on American soil, is rich - for he has the best of all knowledge in his possession, and knowledge makes him the equal of any other man. Knowledge is power. Knowledge is strength. Knowledge is the key opening all doors; and in this book lies that knowledge which causes our children to know and love their freedom, and which will give them the weapons necessary to defend their right to enjoy all the blessings of a land which their ancestors in the faith of the Catholic Church discovered, and in which other ancestors of theirs in the Catholic faith proclaimed freedom of conscience for the first time. "Your father was a foreigner," the descendant of the Mayflower pilgrims may say, "therefore I am more of an American than you." "You are a foreigner," that living libel on American institutions, the modern Know-nothing may sneer, "You are a Catholic; this is a Protestant country." Without a knowledge of the truth, your child may blush and hang his head and be ashamed of his father. Without a knowledge of the truth, you may be unable to meet the sneers of your neighbor, though your heart may be bitter within you, and you may desire with all your might to assert your right to the country in which you live. But how powerless will you and your child be without the knowledge that this book contains. In truth, it holds your title-deeds to your land. Moreover, it is an education in itself; and, though you may not be able to send your son to college, here he will gain the substance of the lectures of many professors. And, if your children are too small to read, you or their mother may be their instructor in their rights and liberties. No man with a sensitive heart and high aspirations can fail to find himself thrilled and elevated by the recital of the deeds of his spiritual ancestors. And Columbus, the Christ-bearer, and Las Casas, the saintly priest, and Father Marquette, and Father Jogues, and Charles Carroll, and Roger Taney, and a hundred other illustrious men who helped to create and to preserve American liberties, were nurtured in that faith which is our most precious treasure. The Catholic Church produced them; the Catholic Church nourished them - for that Church in all ages has taught that the sweetest of all things is freedom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voyages of Christopher Columbus: The Story of the Discovery of America, as Told by the Discoverer And this brings us to the second purpose Of our publica tion. The broad facts that constitute the history of the dis covery of the New World, are not and have never been a matter of controversy. There may be variations in minor details, but they affect neither the nature of the achievement nor the character of the hero. Winsor and Fisk, for instance discredit the romantic story of Columbus' reception by Fray Juan Perez at the convent of La Rabida, an incident which as told in Irving's pages, so moves and stirs the reader. But blot out the incident and neither the originality of Columbus' conception, nor his resourcefulness, skill, and learning as a navigator, neither his unwavering firmness of purpose, nor hisiii introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franciscans in California IT has long been the desire of their successors in the missionary field to possess accurate and more extensive information regarding the old missions and their founders. Unfortunately the Seraphic Pioneers of the West were more fond of work than of record ing what they accomplished. Little they cared what later generations thought of their individual share in the wonders effected, provided the Master took no tice of them, and marked them down in the Book of His Remembrance hence comparatively little is record, and much of this must be accepted upon the authority of writ ers not in sympathy with the aims of the missionar ies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four hundred years--from the first Spanish assaults against the Arawak people of Hispaniola in the 1490s to the U.S. Army's massacre of Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee in the 1890s--the indigenous inhabitants of North and South America endured an unending firestorm of violence. During that time the native population of the Western Hemisphere declined by as many as 100 million people. Indeed, as historian David E. Stannard argues in this stunning new book, the European and white American destruction of the native peoples of the Americas was the most massive act of genocide in the history of the world. Stannard begins with a portrait of the enormous richness and diversity of life in the Americas prior to Columbus's fateful voyage in 1492. He then follows the path of genocide from the Indies to Mexico and Central and South America, then north to Florida, Virginia, and New England, and finally out across the Great Plains and Southwest to California and the North Pacific Coast. Stannard reveals that wherever Europeans or white Americans went, the native people were caught between imported plagues and barbarous atrocities, typically resulting in the annihilation of 95 percent of their populations. What kind of people, he asks, do such horrendous things to others? His highly provocative answer: Christians. Digging deeply into ancient European and Christian attitudes toward sex, race, and war, he finds the cultural ground well prepared by the end of the Middle Ages for the centuries-long genocide campaign that Europeans and their descendants launched--and in places continue to wage--against the New World's original inhabitants. Advancing a thesis that is sure to create much controversy, Stannard contends that the perpetrators of the American Holocaust drew on the same ideological wellspring as did the later architects of the Nazi Holocaust. It is an ideology that remains dangerously alive today, he adds, and one that in recent years has surfaced in American justifications for large-scale military intervention in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. At once sweeping in scope and meticulously detailed, American Holocaust is a work of impassioned scholarship that is certain to ignite intense historical and moral debate.
