Download or read book Made in Italy written by Grace Lees-Maffei and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goods made or designed in Italy enjoy a profile which far outstrips the country's modest manufacturing output. Italy's glorious design heritage and reputation for style and innovation has 'added value' to products made in Italy. Since 1945, Italian design has commanded an increasing amount of attention from design journalists, critics and consumers. But is Italian design a victim of its own celebrity? Made in Italy brings together leading design historians to explore this question, discussing both the history and significance of design from Italy and its international influence. Addressing a wide range of Italian design fields, including car design, graphic design, industrial and interior design and ceramics, well-known designers such as Alberto Rosselli and Ettore Sottsass, Jr. and iconic brands such as Olivetti, Vespa and Alessi, the book explores the historical, cultural and social influences that shaped Italian design, and how these iconic designs have contributed to the modern canon of Italian-inspired goods.

Book Synopsis Itinerari di storia sociale dell’educazione occidentale - Volume Secondo by : Rita Minello
Download or read book Itinerari di storia sociale dell’educazione occidentale - Volume Secondo written by Rita Minello and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Italian graphic design by : Chiara Barbieri
Download or read book Italian graphic design written by Chiara Barbieri and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian graphic design offers a new perspective on the subject by exploring the emergence and articulation of graphic design practice, from the interwar period through to the appearance of an international graphic design discourse in the 1960s. The book asks how graphic designers learned their trade and investigates the ways in which they organised and made their practice visible while negotiating their collective identity with neighbouring practices such as typography, advertising and industrial design. Attention is drawn to everyday design practice, educational issues, mediating channels, networks, design exchange, organisational strategies and discourses on modernism. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources and placing an emphasis on visual analysis, this book provides a model for a contextualised graphic design history as an integral part of the history of design and visual culture.

Book Synopsis The Place of Silence by : Mark Dorrian
Download or read book The Place of Silence written by Mark Dorrian and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Place of Silence explores the poetics and politics of silence in architecture. Bringing together contributions by internationally recognized scholars in architecture and the humanities, it explores the diverse practices, affects, politics and cultural meanings of silence, silent places and silent buildings in historical and contemporary contexts. What counts as silence in specific situations is highly relative, and the term itself carries complex and varied significations which make it a revealing field of study. Chapters explore a range of themes, from the apparent 'loss of silence' in the contemporary urban world; through designed silent spaces; to the forced silences of oppression, catastrophe, or technological breakdown. The book unfolds a rich and complementary array of perspectives which address – through the lens of architecture and place – questions of sound, atmosphere, and attunement, together building a volume which will form the key scholarly resource on architecture and silence.

Book excerpt: Walkscapes deals with strolling as an architecture of landscape. Walking as an autonomous form of art, a primary act in the symbolic transformation of the territory, an aesthetic instrument of knowledge and a physical transformation of the 'negotiated' space, which is converted into an urban intervention. From primitive nomadism to Dada and Surrealism, from the Lettrist to the Situationist International, and from Minimalism to Land Art, this book narrates the perception of landscape through a history of the traversed city.

Book Synopsis Trust in Early Modern International Political Thought, 1598–1713 by : Peter Schröder
Download or read book Trust in Early Modern International Political Thought, 1598–1713 written by Peter Schröder and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can there ever be trust between states? This study explores the concept of trust across different and sometimes antagonistic genres of international political thought during the seventeenth century. The natural law and reason of state traditions worked on different assumptions, but they mutually influenced each other. How have these traditions influenced the different concepts and discussions of trust-building? Bringing together international political thought and international law, Schröder analyses to what extent trust can be seen as one of the foundational concepts in the theorising of interstate relations in this decisive period. Despite the ongoing search for conditions of trust between states, we are still faced with the same structural problems. This study is therefore of interest not only to specialists and students of the early modern period, but also to everyone thinking about ways of overcoming conflicts which are aggravated by a lack of mutual trust.

Book excerpt: This volume sets up a dialogue between the 'historical' and the 'contemporary' Tocqueville. How does a contextualization of Tocqueville, or a focus on his embeddedness in nineteenth-century political culture, add to our understanding of his political thought? How has the use of his writings in political debate influenced the reception of his work?
