Book excerpt: For the past decade the attainment gap in college admission and graduation rates between Black males and their White counterparts has continued to grow. A growing body of research has held that there is a negative correlation between educational attainment and the decline of the Black family structure. As the structure of the Black family has deteriorated due to the lack of a male presence, so have participation rates in higher education for African American males. It is established that environmental and cultural factors have a profound influence on human behaviors, including academic performance. What is less understood is how environmental and cultural factors influence the way in which Black males come to perceive education and how those perceptions influence not only their behavior but their performance in school. It is unknown why being African American and male causes this segment of the population to stand out in the most negative and disheartening ways, both in school and in society. This study measures the perceived influence of four factors (societal dissonance, self-efficacy, African American male mentorship, and institutional support) on the academic success of African American male students at a predominantly White institution of higher education.

Even though there is bountiful research on the deficiencies in the lives of African American males, it is still unclear what conditions lead African American men to higher educational attainment. The goal of this study was to also add to the deficient, ever-emerging body of research in the area of African American male educational attainment, while providing viable solutions that speak to the plights of African American males from all educational backgrounds and experiences. Using a basic interpretive qualitative inquiry format, the research questions focused on (a) how professional and familial social capital is related to academic success, (b) the participant's perception of the role of resilience in the pursuit of academic attainment, and (c) how does self-efficacy influence academic success for these African American male participants? This research analyzed recurring themes from these participants, who were solicited because they can provide expert testimony on how an African American male can achieve academically. The inquiry produced three recurring themes: Self-Belief and Identity, Social Network and Support, and Faith, Spirituality, and Inspiration. After a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the themes, the following categories emerged: Resilience Over Faulty Mindsets; Competition; Above Mediocrity; Social Network and Support; Family; Positive Influences, Mentors, and Peers; Opportunities; Faith, Spirituality, and Inspiration; Faith in a Higher Power; and Historical Responsibility. All the participants identified Social Network and Support as a major factor in their academic success. Most participants credited a parent, peer, mentor, or teacher as the most influential person that helped them throughout their educational pursuits.

Twelve randomly selected African American males completed a Demographic Questionnaire and one face-to-face interview. The Demographic Questionnaire and interview transcripts were analyzed for cultural themes and a Mentor Taxonomy was developed. The results suggested that mentors help successful African American males in their transition adjustment to college and improves upon their academic, social and emotional development.

How does an action research process help key stakeholders make meaning of social learning theory, mentoring, and enhancing achievement among African-American males? The findings from this study indicate that the middle school students and mentors who participated in this action research felt the CMS Mentoring Program positively affected the academic, structural, and personal barriers of the students. Survey and interview methods were applied to help determine if the young men's participation in the program impacted their academic performance in middle school. Precisely, when answering the questions related to this particular area of the study, the participants overwhelmingly acknowledged the benefits of the mentoring experience on their middle school academics and behavior. Social learning theory was the theoretical framework that guided this study. This theory has evolved to suggest that if there is a close identification between the observer and the model and if the observer has a good deal of self-efficacy learning will most likely occur (Bandura, 1989). This study sought to answer how an action research process helps key stakeholders make meaning of social learning theory, mentoring, and enhancing achievement among African-American males. The official academic mentorship model that was developed included training mentors, identifying mentor requirements, and developing and implementing survey instruments to answer this question. The findings indicate critical to the success of a mentoring program is recognizing the importance of building positive relationships with group members through a show of commitment, clearly defined boundaries with consequences, and a willingness to listen to feedback from program participants (Bailey, 2005). The results of this study supported previous research and revealed that a mentoring program positively impacted the young men who participated in the program academically and behaviorally.

Data collected through semi-structured interviews addressed the overarching research question: What are the perceptions of African American male college students regarding the impact of same race mentor relationships on their college experience? and the two sub-questions related to this study: 1) To what extent did having a same race mentor affect the African American male college students’ persistence in college?; 2) To what extent did having a same race mentor affect the African American male college students’ self-efficacy regarding feeling as though they belong in the higher education environment? The participants shared that same race mentor relationships improved their college experience through providing intentional guidance and support.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the enrollment of African American students in higher education has steadily increased. Furthermore, the community college system and specifically the California community college system has seen the highest rise in the enrollment of African American students. Despite the rise in their numbers, African American male students who have relied on the California community college system as a conduit to a better life continue to have the lowest academic achievement outcomes and are the most likely to leave college. Although research shows that the persistence and academic achievement of college students is linked to the interactions they have with faculty and their peers, little is known about whether these relationships are also connected to the academic achievement of African American males attending California community colleges, nor is it understood how psychosocial factors influence the achievement. This dissertation built on a study conducted by Reid (2007) in which Tinto's institutional integration theory (e.g., Tinto, 1993) was extended by assertion that African American males who are academically successful (and not just persistent) are also well integrated in the academic and social milieu of their college campuses. Reid's study also hypothesized that their level of institutional integration which influenced their academic achievement was linked to their racial identity attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach in which twelve African American male students, who were recruited from one Southern California community college, were interviewed to learn about their educational experiences and perceptions. The goal of the study was to provide a voice to this student subgroup which continues to under-perform academically. The findings of the study highlight the importance of race, faculty connections and intrinsic motivation factors in reaching academic goals. The study provides recommendations, based on the findings, for educators, administrators and other community college stakeholders to better assist African American males attending community colleges in California to attain their educational goals.

In addition, the most confident and successful students also reported being satisfied with their opportunities to interact with faculty. A two-way interaction exists between measures of institutional integration and certain racial identity attitudes. Black males with higher GPAs in college also report higher levels of faculty and peer integration, though the relationship is moderated by certain racial identity attitudes. These results suggest that predominantly White research universities can improve the outcomes of Black male undergraduates by facilitating opportunities for them to meet and interact with faculty and by developing their academic self-efficacy and racial identity beliefs. The dissertation subsequently introduces a multidimensional achievement model for African American males and applies this model to explain why certain university programs are successful. It ends by suggesting specific ways universities can foster the achievement of African American male undergraduates.

The aim is to help unearth the marginalized topics of manhood, gender, and masculinity in males generally but, more specifically among African American males, a marginalized student group in education. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book draws upon literature in history, African American studies, gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, psychology, and anthropology.
