This research study examined the perceptions of teachers' preparedness and their efficacy beliefs for teaching English Language Learners. A mixed-method was carried out to address four research questions: 1) What perceptions are held by in-service teachers about teaching practices for ELLs? 2) What is the relationship, if any, between teacher knowledge about teaching ELL students and the instructional practices employed by teachers when instructing ELL students? 3) How effective do in-service teachers feel in teaching ELL students? 4) What factors influence teachers' perceptions of self-efficacy about teaching ELL students? Over 144 teachers participated in the survey questionnaire along with five teachers who participated in focus-groups, interviews, and classroom observations to identify in-depth analysis on their feelings of perceptions and efficacy beliefs. Results from the quantitative study revealed differences in perception and efficacy beliefs for teachers who are bilingual in a second language, teachers who hold a bilingual/ESL certification, and the route in which teachers receive their certification. Qualitative results included the methodologies and cultural competencies that teachers employed in their classroom for English Language Learners. Additionally, participation in professional development activities was found to have an effect in teachers' instructional decisions for teaching ELLs.

Book excerpt: The increasingly diverse population of children in early childhood care and education settings has called attention to the growing demands being placed on teachers to effectively support these students. Current literature has focused primarily on the experiences of teachers of school-aged English language learners (ELLs). This research study builds on this literature by examining the experiences of early childhood education professionals who are teachers of ELLs. The current study analyzed survey data from 62 early childhood care and education teachers in Washington State. Survey items addressed teachers' perceived preparedness and self-efficacy regarding ELLs in their classroom. Teachers were also asked to provide background information about their program, their students, and themselves. This information was then examined in light of its influence on teachers' self-efficacy in teaching ELLs. The quantitative analysis conducted for this study revealed six main significant findings. First, the descriptive analysis revealed notable trends in teachers' self-efficacy and perceived preparedness related to a need for appropriate resources and staffing support as well as concerns about effective communication with parents and guardians of ELLs. Second, inferential statistical analyses showed that teachers' and co-teachers' language characteristics were associated with how self-efficacious respondents felt regarding the ELLs in their classroom. Third, the training experience teachers received outside their teacher preparation programs appeared to have a positive impact on their self-efficacy scores. Fourth, teachers who had received some type of ELL, ESL, TESOL, or bilingual certification/endorsement reported significantly higher levels of self-efficacy regarding ELLs. Fifth, results indicated a notable relationship between self-efficacy scores and ELL achievement levels. Sixth, instructional format appeared to be associated with self-efficacy scores, with mainstream teachers reporting lower levels of self-efficacy than teachers in all other formats. Seventh, self-efficacy scores were strongly related to levels of perceived preparedness to teach ELLs.

Book excerpt: Self-efficacy is an individual's judgment of the relative probability of her or his likely success in attaining desired outcomes (Bandura, 1977). For teachers, efficacy beliefs serve as an assessment of their own abilities to promote student learning. Efficacy beliefs are content-specific and are believed to form early in teachers' professional careers. While studies on teachers' sense of efficacy have examined content areas such as math and science (Mulholland & Wallace, 2001; Riggs & Enochs, 1990), very little research has been conducted to explore the perceived efficacy beliefs of beginning foreign language (FL) teachers. Using a mixed methods approach, this investigation explored factors influencing the teaching efficacy beliefs of FL teachers in a major urban school district in north Texas, as well as the potential relationship between their perceptions of efficacy and professional support. Quantitative data included surveys of FL teachers' efficacy beliefs and perceptions of support. Qualitative data was comprised of case studies, including interviews, observations, and documents collected from four novice FL teachers, all of whom entered the classroom via alternative routes to certification. Cross-case analyses suggest that FL teachers often felt their content area was devalued by administrators, colleagues, and students as a result of its status as a non-tested content area. The efficacy beliefs of the novice FL teachers were influenced in part by contextual factors of their respective schools, including professional isolation as a result of being the only FL teacher on campus, support of colleagues, and the availability of time and resources. Because the four case study participants lacked the benefit of traditional university-based certification, they demonstrated tendencies to rely on their "selected memories," making sense of their role(s) as teacher via the perspective acquired when they were students. Findings of the study suggest that FL teachers often experience "Stepchild Syndrome," marked by professional isolation, a lack of relevant professional development opportunities, and a shortage of pertinent resources for FL teaching. The speculative nature of alternatively certified FL teachers' efficacy beliefs is also examined. The study draws implications for supporting beginning FL teachers, particularly those who enter the profession through alternative routes.

Due to the minimal extant literature related to K-12 teachers’ preparedness and training, specifically regarding English language learners, the purpose of this qualitative, interpretive study was to examine the perceptions of Tennessee K-12 teachers related to preparedness and training to provide instruction and support to English language learners in the general education classroom. I emailed the questionnaire to 63 potential participants and received questionnaire responses from 44 (69.84%) K-12 teachers. I analyzed the data using open, axial, and selective coding to generate three themes for my first research question and two themes for my second research question. K-12 teachers believed college coursework fell short of providing strategies, knowledge, and skills on instruction to English language learners in the general education classroom. Teacher preparedness could be improved with additional coursework and focused professional development related to English language learners in the general education classroom. Results also included K-12 teachers reported the need for more professional development to feel adequately prepared to provide instruction and support to English language learners.

One hundred seven K-12 teachers from seven suburban school districts with less than a five-percent demographic of ELs shared their perceptions of self-efficacy through multiple measures. Online surveys with multiple choice, Likert-scale, and open-ended questions allowed all participants to rate their level of professional preparedness as well as their perceived level of support from administrators and teachers. In addition, personal interviews afforded five participants who had personally experienced a demographic shift of cultural and linguistic diversity in their classrooms the opportunity to expound upon the impact that professional preparedness had on their self-efficacy as teachers. Although a higher percentage of teachers perceived themselves as more prepared than teachers in past studies, Walker, Shafer, and Iiams (2004) and Reeves (2006), the results of this study revealed that the quality and frequency of pre-service training and professional development opportunities encompassing the instruction of diverse students remained substandard today. A majority of the teachers perceived their knowledge, skills, and abilities to instruct ELs in their classrooms as less than effective and suggested better pre-service and professional development training not only to help enhance their sense of self-efficacy but to help them increase their effectiveness in the classroom. Furthermore, the results showed that teachers valued collaboration and observation as possible options to help improve professional preparedness, and in turn, their self-efficacy as teachers of ELs.

Undergoing a greater makeover is the culture of classrooms and American teachers who have seen, firsthand, an increase of more than 60% of English language learner (ELL) students over the past decade (Ballantyne, Sanderman, & Levy, 2008). The purpose of this study was to develop a more in-depth understanding as to whether mainstream teachers from a school district located in upstate South Carolina perceived themselves to be able to effectively teach ELLs. The first of two research question addressed by the study asked about the identifiable differences in the perceived levels of self-efficacy of secondary mainstream teachers with ELLs pertaining to classroom culture. The second research question addressed the components of professional development for teachers with diverse classrooms have had the most impact on the classroom cultures that contain diverse learners. -- A mixed methods research design was utilized to conduct the study. Quantitative data was collected and analyzed with the Teaching Efficacy for Teaching the English Language Learner (TETELL) scale (Yough, 2008). Qualitative data was collected using open-ended response questions added to the survey instrument as well as from a focus group of survey participants facilitated by the researcher. Book excerpt: The United States of America is experiencing a demographic change as dramatic as in the early 20th century when thousands of immigrants entered Ellis Island. Ballantyne, Sanderman, and Levy (2008) reported over the past decade that the number of English Language Learner (ELL) students in this country has increased more than 60%. The purpose of this study was to explore this phenomenon from the perspective of the teachers and their perception of their efficacy in educating ELL students. This study, which included 212 educators from three different school districts in rural Missouri, utilized the Teacher Efficacy of Teaching English Language Learners (TETELL) survey. Participants also had the opportunity to share their experiences with ELL students. The study found that teachers expressed the lowest efficacy in the area of instruction, expressing that they had "Some" feelings of efficacy in the areas of academic expectations, interclassroom dynamics, and social cohesion. In the area of teachers' experiences with ELL students, a theme emerged that teachers expressed frustration with the lack of time, resources, and preparation to instruct these ELL students.
