Destruction of property, loss of lives, damage to homes, and complete failure of infrastructure affected the city and citizens in a variety of ways. The highly visible plight of victims and the major losses suffered by residents became a very visible subject in mass media, and a great deal of research has been aimed at measuring impact of damage caused by this disaster. In addition to significant financial, property, and personal losses, Hurricane Katrina had a profound social impact on population in the city of New Orleans. One important consideration is the effect of risk and crisis communications on public perceptions of information regarding Hurricane Katrina. Using a participant survey consisting of Likert-type scaled responses and open-ended responses, this research analyzed confidence in risk and crisis communication and the effects on public perceptions.
