Previous studies have revealed that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students perceive the campus climate as more hostile and experience more harassment than any other identity group. This case study explores further, utilizing qualitative methods, the perceptions of the campus climate at the University of Missouri by LGBTQ-identified undergraduate students as well as the unmet needs of this population. Five broad themes emerged from the data including (a) discrimination, (b) intersecting identities that influence the perception of discrimination, (c) (dis)comfort, (d) support, and (e) suggestions for improvement. Data analysis shows that while the LGBTQ undergraduate population does experience high levels of harassment and discrimination, these students have created their own supportive communities and networks utilizing existing on and off campus resources. Recommendations for campus improvement are included.

For example, LGBT students face harassment and discrimination at significantly higher levels than their heterosexual peers, and are twice as likely to receive derogatory remarks (Rankin, Weber, Blumenfeld, & Frazer, 2010). As the visibility of LGBT college students and the adversity they face has increased, there is ever more pressure on college and universities to evaluate whether LGBT students' needs are being met. A dependable method of determining this is to conduct an assessment of the campus climate for LGBT students. Campus climate can be consists of the mutually reinforcing relationship between the perceptions, attitudes, and expectations of both individuals and groups, as well as the actual patterns of interaction and behavior between individuals and groups (Cress, 2008). Thus, in order to assess a campus climate, one must determine the current perceptions, attitudes, and expectations that define the institution and its members. Campus climate has a significant impact upon students' academic progress and achievement and their level of satisfaction with their university. Whether or not a student feels as though they matter on their campus is largely a result of the climate. Evaluations of campus climate for LGBT students allow administrations to uncover what inequalities may exist on their campus, which is the first step toward being able to correct them. There have been many methods of improving campus climate that have been effective at a variety of colleges and universities. Administrations that wish to provide LGBT students on their campus with a better experience should invest in as many of these practices as possible. The most important action in improving campus climate is to institute an LGBT resource center or office with a full-time staff member and significant office space. Other impactful strategies include establishing a Safe Zone or Allies program, encouraging LGBT students to form organizations for themselves and their allies, increasing the amount of interaction between LGBT students and faculty - especially LGBT faculty, and establishing a Queer Studies academic program.

Book excerpt: Sexual assault is a persistent problem on college colleges and has been found to impact the health, well-being, and academic success of survivors. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) college students experience sexual assault victimization at disproportionately higher rates compared to their cisgender, heterosexual peers. Federal Title IX legislation in the United States (U.S) requires higher education institutions to have systems in place to respond to reports of sexual assault and support the students affected. However, few students report sexual assault to college officials. This dissertation seeks to contribute to the understanding of campus sexual assault by exploring relationships between perceptions of the campus climate, sexual assault victimization and reporting to campus officials, specifically for LGBTQ students. Data was collected through a survey which was distributed via social media. Ultimately, 1,115 participants met the study criteria. Three empirical articles were developed from this data. The first article explores how different dimensions of the LGBTQ campus climate, race, gender, and sexual orientation impact the odds of experiencing sexual assault victimization in college. The second article investigates how various factors, including circumstances of the crime and campus climate, impact the odds of LGBTQ survivors reporting sexual assault to campus officials. And the third article deals with how the LGBTQ campus climate and reporting behavior contribute to the variance in LGBTQ survivors perceptions of the sexual assault reporting climate. Findings from these analyses are used to make recommendations for policy change at national and state levels and suggestions for how social workers can improve practice with LGBTQ survivors of sexual assault.

Conditions continue to be problematic for LGBTQ students, faculty and staff on college and university campuses, so many institutions are taking active steps to improve climate. There is a void in the literature exploring the impact of change to the perception of campus climate through institutional programming, and this study contributes to that research. Through this study, I examine how recent policy and program changes impact the LGBT campus climate at a large public institution located within a relatively hostile geographic environment. To evaluate potential shifts in campus climate, I conducted in depth interviews of 15 LGBT identified faculty, staff and students who were present before and after institutional changes were implemented. Respondents noted positive changes in campus climate over the last four years, but also stressed that homophobia and homophobic incidences continue to occur despite the improvements in climate. Respondents mentioned several institutional changes as evidence of the university's commitment to support the LGBT community such as the establishment of the LGBT Resource Office, Queer Counseling group, and supportive leadership. I hope to contribute to the literature on LGBT issues in higher education by addressing the degree to which changes in institutional procedures and programs made by administrators can actually influence perceptions of campus climate.

Although institutions are committed to student growth and development, LGBTQ students are often treated with religious stigmatization and discrimination. This qualitative phenomenological research gave LGBTQ students a voice to share experiences that impact perceptions of campus climate, strategies that lead to persistence, and recommendations to strengthen institutional inclusiveness. The interview results from six LGBTQ students at various Christian institutions associated with the Council for Christian College and Universities provided in-depth considerations for faithbased institutions, specifically Christian, to increase enrollment, build more inclusive spaces, and improve student retention as it relates to this population. Through this research, institutions will be able to balance their religious ideals with LGBTQ student needs to promote an affirming campus climate without compromising missions. Study participants were recruited through a vast network of higher education professionals who have preestablished, trusted relationships with participants. Professionals were contacted through Facebook posts and outreach to network connections to share the research opportunity. As LGBTQ students communicated interest in the research, they were scheduled for one-on-one interviews to share their stories. The interviews showed that LGBTQ students often lack institutional support, no policies can positively or negatively embolden campus personnel, there is no one path from enrollment to graduation for LGBTQ students, and that vital support systems are essential to navigating campuses. Despite many of the participants sharing that an organization existed on their campus, these students continue to contend with conservative views on LGBTQ identities, feel they are used to understand issues but without resolution, and that institutional personnel seem unequipped to address campus or personal LGBTQ struggles. Book excerpt: To counter heterosexism, homophobia, and gender binarism in higher education, "safe zone" or "ally" programs are efforts by American universities to create a welcoming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) members of the campus community. This study describes perceptions of campus climate for LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff and examines the impact of ally training and safe zone stickers at a large, public university in California during the 5-year period of 2002-2007. It used a mixed-methods research design: a survey was collected from predominantly-Latino/a students through an LGBT student organization, another survey was collected from faculty and staff who participated in the training, and a focus group was conducted among a subset of training participants. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to provide descriptive statistics and content themes. Findings show LGBT students perceive faculty and staff as accepting, especially those who have taken an ally training, but do not feel safer in the presence of safe zone stickers. Faculty and staff perceive campus climate as barely tolerant of LGBTQ persons. They did report affective and social benefits from both the ally training and safe zone stickers. The study shows that such programs can improve understanding of LGBTQ persons but cannot advance the campus climate beyond mere tolerance without administrative support and additional resources. It also confirms the importance of training before the issuance of stickers, primarily to eliminate those who cannot serve as effective allies due to prejudice. Six specific recommendations for improving the training and campus climate are identified. The Ally/Safe Zone sticker at California State University, Northridge is appended. (Contains 3 tables.).

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of campus climate at the University of South Florida, Tampa Campus for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender students. Specifically, the study determined if there was any relationship between level of homosexual identity development acquired and perceptions of campus climate. If a relationship existed, it would influence the way that campus climate perceptions would be analyzed in future studies. The population was the undergraduate student body at the University of South Florida taking at least six credit hours in the fall semester 2007. An online survey was created with two instruments that have been validated in previous studies, one on campus climate and one that identified identity level. The campus instrument was completed by all respondents, while only those self identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or questioning were directed to the identity level instrument. Of the 31,030 email solicitations sent out to eligible students, 2345 students responded and completed the survey. Of those, 228 were from gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning students. Research questions sought to reveal the campus climate perceptions of GLBTQ students; to determine if perceptions varied between gay, lesbian, bisexual, questioning, and heterosexual students; and to determine if there was a relationship between homosexual identity development and perceptions of campus climate. Conclusions of the study include perceptions of campus climate at USF are more positive than those reported in the results of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Study conducted by Rankin (2003). Additionally, administrative responses to GLBT issues are not visible to students. The research also noted that significant differences exist between the perceptions of campus climate for GLBTQ students between the heterosexual and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning students. Finally, the level of homosexual identity development attained has a significant relationship with perceptions of campus climate The results of this study will impact the focus and delivery of student services, training, and diversity initiatives at the university. Future opportunities for advancing the knowledge of the subject matter include further development of the GIQ identity development instrument, and expanding the question of identity development and campus climate perceptions to a nationwide study.

Book excerpt: This study examined the insight and perceptions of students regarding inclusive/exclusive curricula and campus climate for LGBTIQ and OTHER individuals with multiple intersectional identities. The study examined the diverse demographics of student identities and inclusionary or exclusionary opportunities in educational settings to have systems of support that are reflective of that diversity. Two sources of data were analyzed. A 28 question six point Likert scale survey of statements concerning seeing oneself in curricula and the climate on campus in terms of diverse identities In addition, seven open ended questions were used measuring students personal experiences of inclusion or exclusion in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, age and socio-economic status. Literature review of LGBTIQ engagement or lack of engagement creates an incomplete picture of the community college experience. Much of the literature on LGBTIQ and OTHER students discusses overt and covert forms of discrimination failing to show academics and climate in terms of intellectual and emotional connection. Throughout the research and study of identities the issue of oppression is very clear, with dominant narratives showing a picture of hierarchy; how is the story told, from whose perspective. Kougl (1997) offers that the implications in learning and teaching occurs through a process of actively connecting networks of existing knowledge and networks of new information. Education expansion must have direct opportunities to relate to materials that address the histories, lives and experiences of those involved. A commitment to critical social science, is an attempt to understand in a rationally responsible manner the oppressive features of a society such that this understanding stimulates its audience to transform their society and thereby liberate themselves (Fay, 1987). Educational institutions have made great strides towards more inclusive practices. However the ideal of epistemological equality, empowerment and affirming content for all students continues to fall short. In order to promote this epistemological equality, educational practices may need to include a dismantling dominant narratives that are anything less than inclusive and creating affirming narratives inclusive of Lesbian, Gay Bi-sexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer/Questioning individuals and OTHER individuals with intersectional identities.

Book excerpt: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) college students face discrimination, harassment, and oppression throughout university campuses, consequently leading to a different set of experiences than those of their heterosexual counterparts. In order to better under-stand these experiences, this study examined the perceptions of eight LGBTQ college students on a Southern Californian university campus and the various factors that influenced their well being. In order to analyze LGBTQ students’ perceptions, queer theory and the concept of “doing gender and sexuality,” were used to analyze participant interviews about their time as a university student. Findings indicate that participants had a complex set of experiences that influenced their ability to navigate an institution of higher education. These complexities arose from having to negotiate their multiple identities inside and outside of campus, appreciating LGBTQ representation on campus and within their classrooms, and simultaneously facing multiple forms of oppression that highlight the need for additional forms of LGBTQ advocacy. The findings of this research demonstrate the importance of representation and support from peers, faculty and from the university itself in order to combat the hardships that the queer student community faces.
