Book excerpt: The most common comorbid disorder for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is depression, with more severe symptoms demonstrated in those with high cognitive ability. Feelings of loneliness are associated with depression. There is a dearth of information regarding pertinent variables for loneliness of friendship quality, friendship motivation, and social skills in high ability adolescents with ASD. This study employs a multiple case study design with 10 twice-exceptional adolescent males with high cognitive ability and ASD (ages 13-9 to 18-11) to investigate these variables. Adolescent, parent, and teacher interviews were completed, transcribed, and analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR). Results describe friendship quality for these youth, with particular contributions to current understanding of companionship, security, help, closeness and balance. Findings inform friendship motivation, as well, and etiologies of amotivation are documented. Results indicate positive and negative influences of high intelligence on interpersonal functioning, along with immaturity and symptoms of rigidity affecting friendships, as well. Pathway analyses reveal twice-exceptional youth with insecure friendships experience loneliness and introjected motivation for friendships, along with increases in peer dyadic relationships and decreases in loneliness. Those with insecure friendships and perseverative interest in peers also present with suicidal ideation and/or attempts. Future research should expand the use of individual therapies (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy for depression) for these twice-exceptional teens, particularly in middle school, with modifications to accommodate difficulties with perseveration on negative emotions, as well as explore coping strategies of engaging with fictional characters when lonely.

Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are social communication disorders often categorized by impaired social interaction (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). While the nature and severity of these symptoms vary widely across individuals, most individuals with ASD have difficulties with social relationships, including building and maintaining friendships (Carter, Davis, Klin, & Volkmar, 2005; Kuo, Orsmond, Cohn, & Coster, 2011). Such impairments in childhood have been associated with long-term struggles including academic and occupational underachievement, and mood and anxiety problems later in development (Tantam, 2003). Friendship in adolescents with ASD has not been widely studied (Bauminger, et al., 2008). Research examining friendships in adolescents with ASD, especially the interpretation of friendship from the point of view of the individual with ASD, is needed in order to advance our understanding of the concept, role and importance of friendship within this population of individuals. The current study aimed to present research related to the perception of friendship that adolescents with ASD have, as well as how these perceptions relate to the existing research on typically developing adolescents' view of friendship in order to better understand and explain friendship in this population. This study indicates that to a large degree, adolescents with ASD describe friendship using common themes outlined in the existing literature. The data further indicated that adolescents with ASD experience peer relationships differently than their typically developing peers, particularly surrounding victimization and bullying. There did not appear to be significant differences in perceptions or experiences of friendship based on participant functioning characteristics including FSIQ and SRS scores. The results of this study highlight the importance of developing interventions and curriculum that address the true needs and wants of this population, such as protection from victimization.

Studies have shown that there are adverse academic consequences (Wentzel et al., 2004; Baumister & DeWall, 2005) when students do not have strong peer relations as well as increased vulnerability to stressors such as peer victimization (Junoven & Gross, 2005) or financial adversity (Becker & Luthar, 2002). Students with ASD experience particular social difficulties because of their symptomatology: social communication deficits and restrictive and repetitive behavior (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Although these core deficits constitute the general population of those with ASD, the population is extremely heterogeneous, especially when considering individual developmental trajectories. For example, some children with ASD maintain sustainable social networks and are highly involved with their peers (Kasari, Locke, Gulsrud & Rotherham-Fuller, 2010). Despite increased enrollment in regular classrooms, there is insufficient research analyzing the heterogeneity of peer relations or social networks for students with ASD. The present study explored differences of self-perceptions of friendship quality and loneliness between students with high functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) and those with typical development (TD) and whether these perceptions differentiate students with HFASD who have higher social involvement and are more engaged from those who do not. Results indicate that those with HFASD are consistently reporting poorer friendship quality and fewer friends. However, students with HFASD also are reporting less loneliness compared to peers with TD. Self-perceptions did not significantly predict peer network involvement or engagement. Current findings prompt future research into students with HFASD and their conceptions of friendship and loneliness.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to examine the contributing factors to depression in young adult males with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (HFASD) and controls. Specifically, this study examined the relationship between recalled relational peer victimization, self-perceived social competence, global self-worth, and symptoms of depression in individuals with HFASD compared to normal controls. Depression is one of the most prevalent comorbid conditions in the HFASD population. Individuals with autism are also subjected to high rates of peer victimization. Given that social abilities are impaired in individuals with autism, it was hypothesized that their experiences with victimization by peers, along with their self-perceived social competence and global self-worth, would help explain levels of depression. It was expected that higher levels of peer victimization, lower levels of self-perceived social competence, and lower levels of global self-worth would explain higher levels of depression. Additionally, it was expected that self-perceived social competence would mediate the effect of peer victimization on depression, global self-worth would mediate the effect of peer victimization on depression, and global self-worth would mediate the effect of self-perceived social competence on depression. Variables were measured with self-report questionnaires. Multiple regression and bootstrapping measures of indirect effects were used to examine the presumed effects. Participants included 40 males, ages 18-26; there were 21 control participants and 19 individuals with HFASDs. Individuals with HFASD had significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms, lower levels of self-perceived social competence, lower levels of global self-worth, and a trend towards higher reports of peer victimization. Multiple regression analyses determined that peer victimization, global self-worth, and self-perceived social competence significantly predicted depressive symptoms in the total sample. Also, peer victimization significantly predicted self-perceived social competence and global self-worth. Additionally, self-perceived social competence significantly predicted global self-worth. Tests of indirect effects indicated that global self-worth mediated the effect of peer victimization on depression, self-perceived competence mediated the effect of peer victimization on depression, and global self-worth mediated the effect of self-perceived competence on depression. As a follow-up, this study also examined select HFASD participants' responses about how they defined bullying, as well as their perceived experiences with victimization.
