Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived physical competence and actual motor skill performance. Thirty male and female young children with a mean age of 68.72 months from a private religious school for grades pre-kindergarten to fifth grade participated in this study. The Test of Gross Motor Development-2 and the Modified Pictorial Scale of Perceived Physical Competence were administered to each participant. The results indicate that children tend to have inflated self-perceptions of their motor skills as a whole. Total composite scores indicated that children who had an average to above average motor skill performance were more accurate in their self-perceptions. This study may help educators to identify children who are at risk of having inappropriate or negative motivational guides that may direct future behaviors in physical activity.

In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements.
