Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between adolescents' perceptions of parental psychological control and adolescents' psychological well-being, academic achievement, and delinquency. One hundred and fourteen high school students completed a survey packet which included scales that measured these constructs. Analyses revealed that parental psychological control was significantly and positively related to delinquency, significantly and negatively related to psychological well-being, and not significantly associated with academic status. Moreover, maternal and paternal psychological control individually predicted delinquency and psychological well-being. It was concluded that parental psychological control is related to both internalization (defined in this study as psychological well-being) and externalization (defined in this study as delinquency and academic achievement).

Book excerpt: Perceived parental psychological control (PPC) is a specific subdimension of the broad construct of parental control which involves intrusive parenting practices, such as guilt induction, to influence a child’s behavior. These covert strategies contain undertones of controllingness on behalf of the parent and subsequent withdrawal of love if a child fails to comply with parental expectations. However, there may be a potential moderating role found within the culture of the child, with the assumption that adolescents from diverse cultures may interpret parental discipline and control differently. Through a systematic review of the literature, adolescents from collectivistic versus individualistic cultures were compared based on their perception of experienced parental psychological control. Results reflected PPC comparably predicted an adolescent’s decreased emotional well-being and dampened emotional functioning. Additionally, a negative association between PPC and autonomous self-regulation, perceived competence, and academic engagement was found. Therefore, an adolescent’s culture did not appear to moderate their perception of PPC, given the universally unfavorable effects illustrated throughout the extant literature.

Book excerpt: AbstractIn the last two decades the demographic composition of the United States has witnessed extraordinary changes in the numbers of ethnic minorities, and no where is this more evident than in our nation's public school system. Due to this proliferation of changes in the demographics of our country, serious issues and concerns have been raised with regard to the mental health and academic achievement of school-age children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The major purpose of the study was to examine the implications of the relationship of psychological well-being variables (life satisfaction, self-esteem and ethnic identity), mental health depression, and Intergroup interactional competence and academic achievement of school- age adolescents. In group assemblies of varying sizes, seven measures were explained to students to fill out either in school or at home and return to be collected. These measures have been previously utilized and have been found to have adequate reliability and validity (Crumly & Hyers, 2004). The reliability of all the measures was also assessed in this study and was found to have moderate to high range. The study utilized a total sample of 119 African American adolescents from low social economic status ranging in grades from ten through twelve. The findings indicated significant intercorrelations among some selected psychological variables and objective and self-reported measures of achievement. Gender differences were noted in the predictability of achievement of reading. The perceived caring, inter-group anxiety, and psychological sense of membership measures were found to be the best predictors of academic achievement. Implications of the study as well as recommendations for future research in this area are discussed.

Multiple social, structural, and psychological variables have been presented to try to explain the achievement gap. Researchers have also considered an individual's racial-ethnic identity (REI) as an important variable that contributes to achievement outcomes. Oyserman and colleagues developed a model of REI that emphasizes three key factors of ones racial-ethnic identity that have a direct impact on achievement. Further, her model posits that the interaction between two key REI variables, feelings of connectedness to one's REI group (connectedness) and the perception that one's racial-ethnic group values achievement (embedded achievement), contributes to positive achievement outcomes. Although research has suggested that REI significantly impacts achievement, the specific processes by which this occurs are less known. Considering the social-cognitive literature, it is plausible that different psychological and motivational beliefs mediate the relationship between REI and achievement-related outcomes. This dissertation study examines the mediating effect of sense of school belonging and perceived sense of school engagement on the relationship between REI (embedded achievement and connectedness) and academic achievement of minority middle school students longitudinally through the use of structural equation modeling. Results indicate that embedded achievement significantly predicts academic achievement. Furthermore, sense of belonging to school mediates this relationship for all racial and gender groups. Results also revealed that embedded achievement significantly predicted student perceived engagement for Hispanic students. Strategies to promote sense of belonging and embedded achievement at the personal, structural, community, peer, and family levels are discussed. Due to changes in demographic scene of our country, serious concerns have been raised with regards to mental health and academic achievement of school-age children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The major purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between a set of psychological well-being variables (life satisfaction, self-esteem, and ethnic identity), mental health (depression), intergroup interactional competence, and academic achievement. A total number of 131 subjects in grades 9th through 12th were sampled to participate in the study. All sampled subjects came from low social economic status families of Mexican-American ethnic background. Seven measures were administered to each student in small groups of 10-12 students each. These measures have been found to have adequate reliability and validity in previous studies (Suzuki-Crumly & Hyers, 2004). However, the reliability of all the measures was also assessed in this study and was found to be in the moderate to high range. Implications of the study as well as recommendations for future research in this area are discussed.

Book excerpt: A review of literature has revealed that there is great inconsistency in findings on immigrant adolescents' psychological well-being and academic performance. For example, one group of studies argues that, despite the commonly held belief that the immigration and acculturation process are stressful, immigrant children fare as well as, if not better than, U.S.-born children; but with generational progression from first to second to third generation, they tend to lose their relative advantage. Another group of studies contends that immigrant children in general suffer lower self-esteem, worse psychological health, and other associated adaptive problems in contrast to their native counterparts. I propose that the discrepancy is mainly due to the lack of an ethnic contextuality perspective in researching immigrant families and immigrant children. Each ethnic immigrant group has its specific historical, cultural, and social backgrounds in both their pre- and post-immigration settings. These ethnic-specific contextual factors will then operate on individual ethnic members to form ethnic-specific behavioral and psychological outcomes. Based on this theorization, I predict that children of each ethnic group have their own unique passage of integration into U.S. society. Particularly, due to such ethnic specific mechanisms, the ways in which family functioning impacts on immigrant adolescents' adaptation outcomes should also vary according to national origin. In order to have a reasonable sample of the leading immigrant ethnic groups, I have used the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health data (Add Health) for analysis. I have selected Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Mexican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican families and adolescents for comparison. The hierarchical regression analyses indicate that there are significant ethnic variations in the degrees to which immigrant status, family socioeconomic background, family structure, and family relations impact on adolescent's psychological well-being and academic performance. In addition to this, the data analysis also reveals the disadvantage that all the minority adolescents encounter in comparison with the non-Hispanic white adolescents in terms of psychological well-being. Specifically, when immigrant status, family SES, family structure, and family relations remain constant, adolescents from black, all Asian subgroup, and all Hispanic subgroup backgrounds have higher depression level and lower scores on positive psychological state than non-Hispanic white adolescents. Moreover, the extent to which closeness with parents mediates or moderates the stresses of assimilation varies by ethnic group. This study suggests that, to fully understand ethnic variations, future research needs to examine the larger systems that the ethnic groups are embedded in.

In many decades of work, researchers have continually identified three central dimensions of parenting: support, behavioral control, and psychological control, all of which have been associated consistently with either positive or negative indicators of adolescent functioning. Notwithstanding its volume, the research has been non specific as to the effects of these dimensions and has otherwise been limited by a predominant concentration on western families. This monograph reported on research that addressed these limitations by testing specific effects of the parenting dimensions and by doing with multiple analytic techniques on data from adolescents in 11 cultures across the world. In al sites, it was found that support was associated with higher adolescent social competence and lower depression; psychological control with higher depression and antisocial behavior; and behavioral control with lower antisocial behavior. Recommendations included considering that these dimensions are the parental contribution to relationship types or socialization conditions that, when achieved, (with parents or other significant person) are responsible for the effects.
