Book Synopsis The Impact of Community Embeddedness on Turnover by : Sharon Gibson Heilmann
Download or read book The Impact of Community Embeddedness on Turnover written by Sharon Gibson Heilmann and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation tested the effects of community embeddedness on predicting turnover decisions of members of an organization characterized by frequent relocation and limited discretionary organizational exit. The theoretical premise was that the organization's members would value the links and fit to their community such that thoughts of leaving or actually leaving the organization would be lessened by their desire to remain enmeshed in their communities. Community embeddedness was believed to account for significant incremental variance, beyond that of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, job search, and job alternatives, in predicting turnover of members of the U.S. Air Force using an archival data set. The moderating effects of perceptions of career plateauing, perceived occupational portability, and occupational commutability on intent to turnover and actual turnover also were tested, but no significant findings resulted. The author confirmed that community embeddedness did increase the prediction of actual turnover when considered in conjunction with turnover intentions, but community embeddedness did not increase the prediction of intent to turnover. Results suggested that reconsideration of process models of turnover that identify intent to turnover as the direct antecedent of actual turnover is necessary to evaluate the proper alignment of community embeddedness within the models. Theoretical refinement is necessary to refine the boundary conditions of community embeddedness.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Work Ability and Aging by : Clas-Håkan Nygård
Download or read book Sustainable Work Ability and Aging written by Clas-Håkan Nygård and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many industrialized countries, there is a sharp increase of the aging population due to a decrease in fertility rate and an increase in life expectancy. Due to which, the age dependency ratio rises and may cause increased economic burden among working age population. One strategy to combat this problem is to prolong peoples working career. A sufficient work ability is a requirement for a sustainable and prolonged employment. Work ability is primarily a question of balance between work and personal resources. Personal resources change with age, whereas work demands may not change parallel to that, or only change due to globalization or new technology. Work ability, on average, decreases with age, although several different work ability pathways exist during the life course. Work-related factors, as well as general lifestyle, may explain the declines and improvements in work ability during aging. A sustainable work ability throughout the life course is a main incentive for a prolonged working career and a healthy aging. Work ability and work-related factors, are therefore important occupational and public health issues when the age of the population increases. This Special Issue, “Sustainable Work Ability and Aging”, includes in all 16 original articles and one opinion paper, organized in three sections. The research topics cover wide aspects of work ability, from determinants, older employee´s coping with their work, methodological issues as well as results of interventions on promoting work ability.

Book Synopsis Emerging and Re-Emerging Organizational Features, Work Transitions and Occupational Risk Factors: The Good, the Bad, the Right. An Interdisciplinary Perspective by : Giulio Arcangeli
Download or read book Emerging and Re-Emerging Organizational Features, Work Transitions and Occupational Risk Factors: The Good, the Bad, the Right. An Interdisciplinary Perspective written by Giulio Arcangeli and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The labor market is evolving very rapidly in recent years, in Europe and worldwide. The fast and deep changes brought a brand-new context of challenges and occupational risks to the attention of stakeholders. The current global financial crisis has increased the economic pressures on companies and they in turn have intensified the effects on employees, particularly in terms of new competition contexts and a lot of stress and mental health issues. Concurrently, social, political, and environmental problems generate under-employment, over-qualification, over-education, low wages for skilled workers, and unmet demand for education. Consequently, both high skilled and low skilled immigrant workers are increasing. In addition, workplaces are continually changing in step with the introduction of new technologies, materials, and work processes, together with the changes in the labor market, the new forms of employment, and the new work organizations. These changes lead to new opportunities for employees and employers – but also to new risks or re-actualization of old organizational risks. According to the EU-OSHA, the key points that describe the evolution that is currently ongoing in the world of work are globalization, the technical innovation, and the aging population. On one hand, some older potential risks are reappearing in organizations: intensive fear and worries, organizational anxiety, boredom, physical violence, alienation, segregation, loneliness, and isolation. On the other hand, re-emerging perceived organizational features seem vital for organizations and more important today than ever. Central constructs in the study of organizational behavior and organizational health such as perceived organizational support, commitment in organizational context, socialization processes, change capacity of organizations, perceived organizational justice, ergonomics, and motivation, nowadays seem increasingly important and renewed.

Book Synopsis Research and Theory on Workplace Aggression by : Nathan A. Bowling
Download or read book Research and Theory on Workplace Aggression written by Nathan A. Bowling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace aggression is a serious problem for workers and their employers. As such, an improved scientific understanding of workplace aggression has important implications. This volume, which includes chapters written by leading workplace aggression scholars, addresses three primary topics: the measurement, predictors and consequences of workplace aggression; the social context of workplace aggression; and the prevention of workplace aggression. Of note, the book encompasses the various labels used by researchers to refer to workplace aggression, such as 'abusive supervision', 'bullying', 'incivility' and 'interpersonal conflict'. This approach differs from those of previous books on the topic in that it does not focus on a particular type of workplace aggression, but covers an intentionally broad conceptualization of workplace aggression - specifically, it considers aggression from both the aggressors' and the targets' perspectives and includes behaviors enacted by several types of perpetrators, including supervisors, coworkers and customers.
Book Synopsis Teachers Under Pressure by : Cary Cooper
Download or read book Teachers Under Pressure written by Cary Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our education system has undergone a process of enormous and rapid change, and all too often teachers have found that insufficient support has been offered to help them cope with this. As a result, most teachers now find that they experience stress of one sort or another at some point during their careers. As a direct reaction to this, the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) have commissioned a comprehensive study of the issue of teacher stress. This book reports on the findings of that study, and the implications this has not only for teachers, but also for the pupils they teach. Cary Cooper and Cheryl Travers' book: * helps to identify which teachers are currently at risk of stress * explores how teacher's problems vary according to where they work, their grade, whether they are male or female and the age range they teach * suggests ways in which the problems of teachers can be helped * suggests preventative action to minimise stress and maximise educational experience

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underemployment – when people are employed in some way that is insufficient, such as being overqualified or working part-time when one desires full-time employment – is a challenge faced by all industrialized nations and their organizations and individuals. Just like unemployment, some level of underemployment exists even in the best of times, but it becomes more pervasive when the job market is weak. Given the current economic climate in North America and abroad, researchers and scholars in various disciplines (psychology, business, sociology, economics) are becoming more interested in investigating the effects of underemployment and identifying possible practical solutions. Underemployment synthesizes the current understanding of the phenomenon by bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives and expertise with the aim of informing and guiding the next generation of underemployment research.

Book Synopsis Examining the Effect of Network Centrality on Turnover Intentions Through a Social Support Lens by : Brian LaValley
Download or read book Examining the Effect of Network Centrality on Turnover Intentions Through a Social Support Lens written by Brian LaValley and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employee Turnover has long been a topic of inquiry in the academic literature in management and social science beginning with the seminal work of March and Simon (1958) who proposed a turnover model based on perceived desirability of the job (i.e., job satisfaction) and individual characteristics that promoted ease of movement between organizations. A recent line of research in organizational communication by Feeley and Barnett (1997) was the first to suggest that an employee's centrality in one's communication network predicts turnover. This study at a large non-profit in New England continues the process of examining how network centrality, strength of ties and specifically social support affect the turnover intention process. Results from the study indicated that social support and strength of ties are significant predictors of turnover intention in the workplace, but unlike earlier studies did not find in-degree centrality to be similarly related. In addition, level of stress also significantly predicted turnover intention. The study introduced a new 3-question scale to measure social support in the workplace. It represents the first formal test of the Workplace Social Support Sub-scale (WSSSu).
