Book excerpt: The researcher sought out to analyze the perceived leadership style of a collegiate coach for an elite level collegiate volleyball program, and how athletes within that program perceive those behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to compare the self-perceived leadership behaviors of a head coach at the collegiate level and compare this self-perception to the athlete’s perception of the coach’s behaviors and leadership style. The Coaching Behavior Score for Sport (CBS-S) was administered to the collegiate student-athletes and support staff members once the season was completed. The self-perceived survey of the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) was administered once to only the Head Coach after the season was completed. Results from the LSS showed higher scores in Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback. Results also showed lower scores in Democratic Behavior and Autocratic behavior. The subgroup which was scored around average was Social Support. Results from the CBS-S showed significant scores confirming the coach’s self-perception of leadership in the subscale groups of physical training and conditioning, technical skills, and competitive strategies. The results from the CBS-S and LSS offered a unique finding where the Head Coach the lower end scores in the subgroups Democratic and Autocratic behavior, the CBS-S results showed how the participants perceived the Head Coach higher in the subscale groups Personal Rapport, Goal Setting, and Mental Preparation. These results provide insight into a leader who can achieve a high level of task-oriented behaviors while also being perceived to be athlete oriented.

The purpose of this research was to examine the ways in which perceived coach leadership behaviors impact perceptions of coaching performance, individual athlete performance, team performance, and lifelong outcomes. In this study, two hundred seventy nine former student-athletes were asked to recall and report on the experiences they had as an athlete during high school along with specific lifelong outcomes (e.g., confidence, control etc.). Student judgment of their coaches' types of behavior, (e.g., Democratic vs. Autocratic) was compared with perceptions of their coach's performance, their individual performance, their team's performance and various lifelong outcomes. Results revealed that Training and Instruction, Social Support, and Positive Feedback were related to Coach Performance. Training and Instruction and Democratic Behaviors were related to Individual Athlete Performance. Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback were related to Team Performance. Social Support structures were related to Athlete Challenge. Training and Instruction was related to Athlete Confidence in Abilities and overall Lifelong Outcomes. Autocratic Behaviors were related to Athlete Control of Emotions. Training and Instruction was found to be related to every short-term performance component. Coaches seeking to impact performance of their teams can do so by utilizing these leadership behaviors. Many of these behaviors also have a long-term positive effect on the individual. Sport managers seeking to satisfy the goals of the organization may employ these leadership behaviors to select, train, and evaluate staff members to increase the overall effectiveness of the organization.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the hitting and serving percentages of collegiate volleyball players and perceived coaching behaviors of their respective coaches. The study included 23 participates [sic], 18 to 22 years old, from Oklahoma City University's (n = 11) and the University of Central Oklahoma's (n = 12) varsity volleyball teams. The subjects' hitting and serving percentages were recorded after each match during their pre-season competition. Once the pre-season was over, the researcher administrated the Coaching Behaviour Scale for Sports (CBS-S) survey which measured perceived coaching behaviors for each athlete in six different categories. A Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationships among all the categories of the survey and the hitting and serving percentages for both schools. The results indicated that there were no significant relationships between the perceived coaching behaviors and the hitting and serving percentages of the collegiate volleyball players from either program."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to begin testing assumptions about coaches' leadership and team communication by starting with examination of the relationship between a head coach's perception of his leadership behavior and his perception of the effectiveness of his team's communication. The sample in the study consisted of fifty NCAA Division I Men's Head Hockey Coaches during the 2006-2007 season. Demographic data reported included the following: the participants' age, education level, nationality, number of year as a head coach, number of years as an assistant coach, 2006-2007 record, and number of years as head coach at their current school. A survey methodology was used to test three hypotheses and combined two scales used in similar research; The Leadership Scale for Sport (Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980) and The Scale for Effective Communication in Team Sports (Sullivan & Felts, 2003). Results indicated that coaches who regularly provide training and instruction perceive their team members to accept each other, have distinct identities, and engage in positive conflict. In addition results showed that coaches who regularly provide positive feedback perceived their team members to accept each other and engage in positive conflict.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the perceptions of leadership style of Division III head basketball coaches and whether it had an effect on the perceived cohesion of the team. The relationships of leadership and cohesion with both success and satisfaction were also explored. In addition, this study also examined variables such as gender and player status (starters or non-starters) to determine if they had an effect on leadership and cohesion. A combination of convenience and random sampling was used to select potential participants for the study. After receiving the agreement to participate, packets containing a questionnaire for each athlete and head coach, as well as an explanation of the study and instructions, were mailed to the teams. Fourteen of the 21 teams returned their questionnaires, with 13 coach and 145 athlete questionnaires being usable. Athlete questionnaires consisted of 35 items from the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS), examining four behaviors of leadership: Training and Instruction, Social Support, Democratic Behavior, and Positive Feedback. Also on the athlete questionnaire were 18 items from the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ), which measure four dimensions of cohesion: Attraction to Group - Task, Attraction to Group - Social, Group Integration - Task, and Group Integration - Social. One item for measuring overall satisfaction was included, as well as nine demographic items. Coach questionnaires included only the 35 leadership items and seven demographic items. Results showed a significant relationship between leadership and cohesion, specifically between Training and Instruction behaviors and three of the four cohesion dimensions (Attraction to Group - Task, Group Integration - Task, Group Integration - Social). Other noteworthy findings included the significant relationships found between leadership and success, leadership and satisfaction, cohesion and success, and cohesion and satisfaction. Also, there was a significant difference in perceived cohesion between starters and non-starters; no significant difference in perceive leadership behavior was found between these groups. There was a significant difference between genders on leadership behaviors, with men rating each behavior higher. No significant difference was found between genders on cohesion. A discussion of the results includes practical implications for collegiate coaches and athletes and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: Partial Least Squares (PLS) is an estimation method and an algorithm for latent variable path (LVP) models. PLS is a component technique and estimates the latent variables as weighted aggregates. The implications of this choice are considered and compared to covariance structure techniques like LISREL, COSAN and EQS. The properties of special cases of PLS (regression, factor scores, structural equations, principal components, canonical correlation, hierarchical components, correspondence analysis, three-mode path and component analysis) are examined step by step and contribute to the understanding of the general PLS technique. The proof of the convergence of the PLS algorithm is extended beyond two-block models. Some 10 computer programs and 100 applications of PLS are referenced. The book gives the statistical underpinning for the computer programs PLS 1.8, which is in use in some 100 university computer centers, and for PLS/PC. It is intended to be the background reference for the users of PLS 1.8, not as textbook or program manual.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived coaching behaviors and the changes that occur in college athletes' perceptions of team cohesion and collective efficacy during a season. Additionally, the strength and direction of the relationship between collective efficacy and team cohesion was tested. To test these relationships, a series of questionnaires were administered to 180 collegiate athletes in the early season and late season. Multivariate multiple regression analyses indicated that increases in athletes' perceptions of team cohesion and collective efficacy over the season were positively correlated with perceptions of their coach exhibiting higher levels of democratic behavior, training and instruction, social support, positive feedback (LSS), and positive and informational feedback (CFQ) and lower levels of autocratic behaviors, punishment-oriented feedback, and non-reinforcement/ignoring mistakes. A significant relationship was also found between team cohesion and collective efficacy at the early season and especially at the late season measurement.
