Book excerpt: Research has explored the impact of vicarious trauma on social workers and other helping professionals, but not specifically within the field of child welfare. This study aims to explore the different coping strategies that Los County Department of Children and Family Services' social workers use in dealing with a difficult work day. Fifty-six Children's Social Workers at the Lakewood Office participated in the study by completing a survey that assesses their level of vicarious trauma using a standardized instrument, ProQOL R-IV, as well as their self-reported coping strategies. Results found that child welfare workers in Los Angeles have high levels of job effectiveness (74.1%), high levels of potential professional burnout (75.9%), and moderate levels of vicarious trauma (35.2%) and those workers who self-report using more positive coping strategies were experiencing lower levels of the trauma.
