In America specifically, the number of individuals aged 65 and older is estimated to increase from 35 million in 2000 to 71 million in 2030. Additionally, about 1.4 million adults aged 65 or older currently reside in a nursing home (CDC, 2003). As the demand for long-term care increases, so does the plea for higher quality. The culture change movement strives to change nursing homes from impersonal medical models to home-like environments which provide care tailored to each unique individual (Koren, 2010). Being aware of resident preferences is crucial to providing high quality care (Towsley, Hirschman & Madden, 2015). It is vital to use resident preferences to individualize care and shift the care model from an impersonal, medical model to a person-centered model (Koren, 2010).A study which aimed to understand resident preferences found that being shown care and respect were two of the most important aspects of care to nursing home residents (Bangerter, Van Haitsma, Heid, & Abbott, 2015). Therefore, it is imperative to analyze what respect and care mean to residents. The present study uses qualitative analysis to analyze the responses to the questions "how would you like staff to show you respect?" and "how would you like staff to show they care about you?" from a sample of 39 residents. The first item yielded 9 theoretically distinct categories while the latter yielded 11 categories. Understanding resident perspectives and preferences will allow nursing homes to show the respect and care that residents define, as well as implement strategies to honor these preferences, thus truly offering person-centered care.
