Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) 2007 is an international, multidisciplinary conference for the presentation and discussion of current research in the theory and application of computational methods in problems of biological significance. Presentations are rigorously peer reviewed and are published in an archival proceedings volume. PSB 2007 will be held January 3OCo7, 2007 at the Grand Wailea, Maui. Tutorials will be offered prior to the start of the conference. PSB 2007 will bring together top researchers from the US, the Asian Pacific nations, and around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of computational biology. It is a forum for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modeling, and other computational methods, as applied to biological problems, with emphasis on applications in data-rich areas of molecular biology. The PSB has been designed to be responsive to the need for critical mass in sub-disciplines within biocomputing. For that reason, it is the only meeting whose sessions are defined dynamically each year in response to specific proposals. PSB sessions are organized by leaders of research in biocomputing''s OC hot topics.OCO In this way, the meeting provides an early forum for serious examination of emerging methods and approaches in this rapidly changing field. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Protein Interactions and Disease (106 KB). Contents: Protein Interactions and Disease; Computational Approaches to Metabolomics; New Frontiers in Biomedical Text Mining; Biodiversity Informatics: Managing Knowledge Beyond Humans and Model Organisms; Computational Proteomics: High-Throughput Analysis for Systems Biology; DNA-Protein Interactions: Integrating Structure, Sequence, and Function. Readership: Academia and industry in the fields of biocomputing, bioinformatics and computational biology."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galanin is a neuropeptide found both in the central and peripheral nervous system. The 29-amino acid peptide (named after its N-terminal glycine and C-terminal alanine) was identified in 1983 by its C-terminal amidation. This 'reverse' approach, that is to discover a substance through a distinct chemical feature, and only subsequently to characterize its biological activity, was novel and has been successful in the identification of several other peptides. After the structure of galanin was determined in 1983, functional studies were performed with material purified from natural sources until the synthetic form of the peptide became available. Galanin can act as transmitter, modulator and trophic factor, and is involved in a number of physiological processes such as hormone secretion, cardiovascular mechanisms, feeding and cognition. This peptide may also be of significance for a number of pathological processes/disorders including pain, depression, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, addiction and cancer. This wide diversity of actions is mediated by three galanin receptor subtypes. The studies reviewed in this volume give a fairly complete overview of the spectrum of the biological actions and functions of galanin and its receptors and on possible therapeutic applications in a number of pathological conditions.

Book excerpt: Proteomic and Metabolomic Approaches to Biomarker Discovery, Second Edition covers techniques from both proteomics and metabolomics and includes all steps involved in biomarker discovery, from study design to study execution. The book describes methods and presents a standard operating procedure for sample selection, preparation and storage, as well as data analysis and modeling. This new standard effectively eliminates the differing methodologies used in studies and creates a unified approach. Readers will learn the advantages and disadvantages of the various techniques discussed, as well as potential difficulties inherent to all steps in the biomarker discovery process. This second edition has been fully updated and revised to address recent advances in MS and NMR instrumentation, high-field NMR, proteomics and metabolomics for biomarker validation, clinical assays of biomarkers and clinical MS and NMR, identifying microRNAs and autoantibodies as biomarkers, MRM-MS assay development, top-down MS, glycosylation-based serum biomarkers, cell surface proteins in biomarker discovery, lipodomics for cancer biomarker discovery, and strategies to design studies to identify predictive biomarkers in cancer research. - Addresses the full range of proteomic and metabolomic methods and technologies used for biomarker discovery and validation - Covers all steps involved in biomarker discovery, from study design to study execution - Serves as a vital resource for biochemists, biologists, analytical chemists, bioanalytical chemists, clinical and medical technicians, researchers in pharmaceuticals and graduate students
