Book excerpt: All throughout his life, Jose Martinez had been plagued by Demons and the Horrors of life. He has fought many battles. Not battles of war but battles of the mind and spirit. He has fought his way through life to stay alive and better himself through all his tribulations. He saw that God was great and that God never once gave up on him. The man who once ran the streets was now running the Grace of God through his prayers and his sermons. The one who once belonged to a gang, now belongs to God. Jose Martinez now a Chaplain and a Youth Pastor, challenges people to change their lives for the better. The fate of the world hangs on us.This is a true life story and with this remarkable testimony, it will not only open your mind to the ways of the world, but it will touch your heart and challenge you to change your life for the better... Challenge you to be Radical."Throughout my life, I believed in God but did not know or fully understand God. For the first time in my life, Thanks to Jose, I am starting to understand. I realized not too long ago that God placed him into my life when he did for a reason. He placed a man who could save my life into my life when the worst part of my life was about to occur before I even knew it was coming."Wayne R. LaPointe

Book excerpt: Fourteen-year-old John Barron is asked, like his father and grandfather before him, to spend the summer taking care of their sheep in the haymeadow. Six thousand sheep. John will be alone, except for two horses, four dogs, and all those sheep. John doesn't feel up to the task, but he hopes that if he can accomplish it, he will finally please his father. But John finds that the adage "things just to sheep" is true when the river floods, coyotes attack, and one dog's feet get cut. Through it all he must rely on his own resourcefulness, ingenuity, and talents to survive this summer in the haymeadow.

Book excerpt: Lila's House: Male Prostitution in Latin America presents insight into male prostitution in a truly global array of Latin American countries. This study focuses on a very specific sexual culture within the realm of male prostitution: the young men of a lower/middle-class brothel catering to a broad range of clients. You will explore the culture of juvenile prostitution and learn from the immediate intervention program that was implemented. Twenty-five young men between the ages of 13 and 27 were interviewed for this study. They share with you their views on: sexual initiation sexual definition sexual orientation love drug use prostitution family relationships relationships with men and women The young men interviewed for this study are in serious danger of being exposed to the AIDS virus and of becoming addicted, if they are not already, to cocaine, crack, or alcohol. Those conducting the study initiated a campaign to supply condoms and raise the young men's awareness about AIDS and drugs and began an immediate support program. The project resulted in the establishment, in June 1997, of an alternative home for juvenile prostitutes, which offers various opportunities for education and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Mistress of Jose Rizal is a collection of stories that focuses on multigenerational tales of intertwined Filipino families. Set in the huge yet relatively overlooked and misunderstood Filipino diaspora in the United States, this book follows characters who live in the shadow of the histories of the United States and its former colony in Asia, the Philippines. The impact of immigration and separation filters through the stories as a way of communing with or creating distance between individuals and family, country, or history. Roley’s work has been praised by everyone from New York Times literary critics to APIA author Helen Zia for his bare, poetic style and raw emotionalism. In the collection’s title story, a woman living with her daughter and her daughter’s American husband fears the loss of Filipino tradition, especially Catholicism, as she tries to secretly permeate her granddaughter’s existence with elements of her ancestry. In "New Relations," an American-born son introduces his mother to his Caucasian bride and her family, only to experience his first marital discord around issues of politesse, the perception of culture, and post-colonial legacies. Roley’s delicately nuanced collection often leaves the audience with the awkwardness that comes from things lost in translation or entangled in generational divides.

Book excerpt: A wonderful look at the stories of a family trying to make it in the United States. It chronicles a Dominican man who immigrates to America during the post-World War II era, and subsequently shares most of the twentieth century's second half working to achieve his family's American Dream. In the words of the author, "This story is one of perseverance, which exemplifies the American dream, and love, which is the magic behind spirituality. It can be recognized in many families who have had forefathers that sacrificed much to bear the fruits they enjoy today. It is a tale that needs to be told to remind us of where we come from." The story is set to the backdrop of events of American Major League Baseball, a major reason for the connection of generations and cultures. It recounts the history of Baseball in the United States for the last half of the twentieth century, in a way that reflects the principles of that period. The writer takes the reader though his observations of those Baseball seasons, and how they helped shape his perspective on family and teamwork. Filled with personal anecdotal stories, poingant stories, and opinions, the story attempts to make the reader laugh, cry, and think.
