Book excerpt: Jamaica, Queens, has long occupied a commanding position in the political, social, and industrial life of Queens County. Indigenous people created a trail, used by various tribes to trade furs and other goods, through the woods that later became Jamaica Avenue, the main street of the village. Jamaica was witness to the evolution of change, receiving a charter from Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant in 1656, becoming an English colony in 1664, and winning freedom in the American Revolution with the Jamaica Minutemen. The area is richly steeped in history: George Washington slept here; and Walt Whitman, Susan B. Anthony, Rufus King, Jacob Riis, and many more have left their mark on Jamaica. Jamaica is an astounding visual journey documenting the unique history of this remarkable community over more than 350 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queens, New York, boasts a rich history that includes dozens of poorly publicized but historically impressive houses. A mix of farmsteads, mansions, seaside escapes, and architecturally significant community dwellings, these homes were owned by America's forefathers, nouveau riche industrialists, Wall Street tycoons, and prominent African American entertainers from the Jazz Age. Rufus King, a senator and the youngest signer of the US Constitution, operated a large family farm in Jamaica, while piano manufacturer extraordinaire William Steinway lived in a 27-room, granite and bluestone Italianate villa in Astoria. Local musicians include Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne. Through more than 200 photographs, Historic Houses of Queens explores the borough's most notable residences--their architecture, owners, surrounding neighborhoods, peculiarities, and even their fates as some vanished due to financial problems or fires.

Book excerpt: The Jamaica Estates community evolved with the advent of the 20th century. The verdant hills north of the colonial village of Jamaica were blanketed with forests of deciduous trees and dotted with crystal clear glacial lakes. The area's country beauty and tranquility offered people an escape from the congestion of the crowded city. As the Queensborough Bridge neared completion in 1907, two wealthy real estate speculators, Ernestus Gulick and Felix Isman, envisioned a unique community. Together they imagined a residential park offering people the ability to have homes in an area of breathtaking country beauty while working in the city.

Book excerpt: Based on police wiretaps and exclusive interviews with drug kingpins and hip-hop insiders, this is the untold story of how the streets and housing projects of southeast Queens took over the rap industry. For years, rappers from Nas to Ja Rule have hero-worshipped the legendary drug dealers who dominated Queens in the 1980s with their violent crimes and flashy lifestyles. Now, for the first time ever, this gripping narrative digs beneath the hip-hop fables to re-create the rise and fall of hustlers like Lorenzo “Fat Cat” Nichols, Gerald “Prince” Miller, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, and Thomas “Tony Montana” Mickens. Spanning twenty-five years, from the violence of the crack era to Run DMC to the infamous murder of NYPD rookie Edward Byrne to Tupac Shakur to 50 Cent’s battles against Ja Rule and Murder Inc., to the killing of Jam Master Jay, Queens Reigns Supreme is the first inside look at the infamous southeast Queens crews and their connections to gangster culture in hip hop today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queen of Jamaica examines our relationship with the crown and explores the possibilities for our future as a people and that of monarchy in Jamaica. It is proposed that now is the time for Jamaica to say good-bye to Britains Queen Elizabeth as our monarch. Before we close this chapter on the British Crown, there are a few questions to consider: Are we ready for complete independence? Is Jamaica inspired enough to take great strides forward on our own? Are we prepared to outline a long-term strategy for sustainable development and see it to fruition? Can we reform Jamaica from within, to create a powerhouse of progress and prosperity? What will happen to Jamaicans who hold British passports? What does it mean to be a Jamaican? How will separation from the crown affect our identity as a people? Will there be unexpected consequences to going it alone? Do we really want to be a republic? Is this form of government in keeping with our traditions in governance? What will be gained by adopting this model for our political future? What will be lost by abandoning the monarchy? Why not choose to have our own working monarch? Have we grown accustomed to having a lofty figurehead to look up to? Are our national interests best served by having such a person for the people to focus on as an example of what a fine and upstanding Jamaican should be? Would having such a leader that reflects our nation inspire greatness in our people? Learn more about the road to Jamaicas future in The Queen of JamaicaA Crown for Our Empire.
