Book Synopsis The Pentagon’s Battle for the American Mind by : Lori L. Bogle
Download or read book The Pentagon’s Battle for the American Mind written by Lori L. Bogle and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has historically believed itself to be the institution best suited to develop the character, spiritual values, and patriotism of American youth. In Strategy for Survival, Lori Bogle investigates how the armed forces assigned itself the role of guardian and interpreter of national values and why it sought to create “ideologically sound Americans capable of defeating communism and assuring the victory of democracy at home and abroad.” Bogle shows that a tendency by some in the armed forces to diffuse their view of America’s civil religion among the general population predated tension with the Soviet Union. Bogle traces this trend from the Progressive Era though the early Cold War, when the Truman and Eisenhower administrations took seriously the battle of ideologies of that era and formulated plans that promised not only to meet the armed forces’ manpower needs but also to prepare the American public morally and spiritually for confrontation with the evils of communism. Both Truman’s plan for Universal Military Training and Eisenhower’s psychological warfare programs promoted an evangelical democracy and sought to inculcate a secular civil-military religion in the general public. During the early 1960s, joint military-civilian anticommunist conferences, organized by the authority of the Department of Defense, were exploited by ultra-conservative civilians advancing their own political and religious agendas. Bogle’s analysis suggests that cooperation among evangelicals, the military, and government was considered both necessary and normal. The Boy Scouts pushed a narrow vision of American democracy, and Joe McCarthy’s chauvinism was less an aberration than a particularly noxious manifestation of a widespread attitude. To combat communism, American society and its armed forces embraced brainwashing—narrow moral education that attacked everyone and everything not consonant with their view of the world and how it ought to be ordered. Exposure of this alliance ultimately dissolved it. However, the cult of toughness and the blinkered view of reality that characterized the armed forces and American society during the Cold War are still valued by many, and are thus still worthy of consideration.

It is the single most important philosophy that has driven America's success since the beginning. Freedom, however, is an expensive luxury to secure, and that is why America strives to be the leading force in military might and power. Americans are accustomed to this luxury and in ways they have taken it for granted. The dreaded day of 9/11 opened the eyes of millions of Americans when the US homeland was attacked. Its enemies exploited a weakness in general security and utilized that weakness to promote fear and chaos! The enemy took decisive action against its American foe; lending to the shocking realization that America is not immortal. Imagine if America's other weaknesses were exploited...Imagine if the next attack wasn't targeted at civilians but at the American government... Pentagon's Hammer is a story following a highly intelligent group of terrorists that have infiltrated the core of America's defense structure and are now utilizing this great wealth of knowledge against its sworn nemesis. Book Synopsis A Month of Prayer by : W. Douglas Hood
Download or read book A Month of Prayer written by W. Douglas Hood and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this collection of meditations and prayers, the authors hope to provide a pathway to a deeper experience of prayer—an experience that flows organically from a deeper grasp of what Scripture teaches on the form, content, and practice of prayer. Herman Melville, the author of the novel Moby Dick, observed that “to produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” The mighty theme of Jesus’ life was prayer. Prayer requires time to cultivate; prayer demands extraordinary perseverance. But once Jesus’ approach to prayer is mastered, don’t be surprised if others approach and ask, “Teach me to pray like that.”
Book Synopsis Overthrow a Fascist Regime on $15 a Day by : Wayne Madsen
Download or read book Overthrow a Fascist Regime on $15 a Day written by Wayne Madsen and published by Trine Day. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 347 pages. Book excerpt: The highs and lows of the Bush administration from the vantage point of a political dissenter are revealed in this undaunted analysis of American government. Formerly an executive at a Fortune 500 company, Wayne Madsen quit his job and moved to Washington, DC, in 2000 to launch a journalistic, grassroots campaign that sought to cut through media hype and unveil the truth behind the politics. Selections of his writings are included, covering issues ranging from 9/11 and the Iraq war to the ousting of Bill Frist and Rick Santorum. As Madsen’s whistle-blowing became more pronounced, his financial support from sources within the capital dwindled. But as this riveting account shows, some battles can be fought even on a shoestring budget.
Download or read book The Family written by Jeff Sharlet and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist's penetrating and controversial look at the untold story of Christian fundamentalism's most elite organisation- a self-described 'invisible' global network dedicated to a religion of power for the powerful. They are 'the Family' - fundamentalism's avant-garde, waging spiritual war in the halls of American power and around the globe. They consider themselves the 'new chosen'- congressmen, generals and foreign dictators who meet in confidential 'cells', to pray and plan for a 'leadership led by God', to be won not by force but through 'quiet diplomacy'. Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside its walls. The Family is about the other half of American fundamentalist power - not its angry masses, but its sophisticated elites. In public, they host Prayer Breakfasts; in private they preach a gospel of 'biblical capitalism', military might and American empire. Citing Hitler, Lenin and Mao as leadership models, the Family's current leader, Doug Coe, declares, 'We work with power where we can, build new power where we can't'. Part history, part investigative journalism, The Family is a compelling account of how fundamentalism came to be interwoven with American power and the no-holds-barred economics of globalisation. No other book about the Right has exposed the Family or revealed its far-reaching impact on democracy, and no future reckoning of fundamentalism will be able to ignore it.

Download or read book Hollywood, the Pentagon and Washington written by Jean-Michel Valantin and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood and the Pentagon: on one side a great industry, 'the makers of dreams', on the other the US Defence department. What relations unify these two potent symbols of American power? This extensive analysis of mainstream Hollywood movies lifts the lid on the interdependence between these two institutions. The movie industry is exposed as a key protagonist in the US strategy debate through the production of films on national security across many genres, from comedy to thriller, from sci-fi to war movies. This timely book also explores prevailing ideas on the lsquo;threatrsquo; to homeland USA that is put forward by the national security network, a threat that is seen as the justification for and legitimization of Americarsquo;s military operations and strategic choices. This book reveals how in the last 20 years there has been a consistent collaboration between these two industries: enormous contracts have been exchanged between the studios and the defence department. It shows how Hollywood is completely penetrated by the ideological and political thinking of Washington, which in turn appears to be directly inspired by the productions of Hollywood.
