This book was released on 1996-12-20 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on National Statistics and the Committee on Population, at the request of the NIA, convened a workshop in March 1996 to discuss data on the aging population that address the emerging and important social, economic, and health conditions of the older population. The purposes of the workshop were to identify how the population at older ages in the next few decades will differ from the older population today, to understand the underlying causes of those changes, to anticipate future problems and policy issues, and to suggest future needs for data for research in these areas. The scope of the workshop was broader than that of the 1988 CNSTAT report, including not only data on health and long-term care, but also actuarial, economic, demographic, housing, and epidemiological data needs for informing public policy.

Book Synopsis Economic Strategies for Mature Industrial Economies by : Peter Karl Kresl
Download or read book Economic Strategies for Mature Industrial Economies written by Peter Karl Kresl and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy has transformed during the last few decades. Though the changes have benefited some, many mature industrial economies (MIEs) have not been treated well by the changes they have seen and have been forced to adapt to dramatically changed circumstances. In this collection of original papers, economists and geographers from Asia, North America and Europe examine the policy initiatives that have succeeded in their countries. The analyses address issues such as local, state and federal governance, aging populations, inter-city cooperation and loss of dominant firms. Additionally, the authors discuss policy issues such as industrial tourism, the roles of education, knowledge and culture, and repositioning a regions place in the global economy. The volume also includes an empirical estimation of the competitiveness of major cities. The contributors to this book hold that it is possible for the overwhelming majority of MIEs to shape their policy in such a way that many of the objectives that will yield the most prosperity will fall within their reach. In that spirit, this book offers the elements for generating economic strategies for mature industrial economies. Suggesting frontier polices to help cities chart a course for future developmental success, this stimulating work is ideally suited to economists, policymakers, city planners, students and scholars of business, economics, urban studies and public policy, and all those concerned with creating equity for the cities of tomorrow.

Download or read book Elderburbia written by Philip B. Stafford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informed and often moving account of the crucial role of place in the lives of elders and what researchers and city planners are doing—and need to do—to make communities more age-friendly. Elderburbia: Aging with a Sense of Place in America argues that aging is not about time and the body, but about place and relationships. Drawing on the fascinating, multidisciplinary field of ethnography, it gives readers a deeper understanding of how the aging experience is shaped by where people call home, as well as a look at what makes a place well-suited for post-retirement living. Elderburbia combines cutting-edge scholarship with practical advice. The book provides an introduction to pivotal research on the broad subject of aging and place, including studies of migration and relocation. It also takes readers inside innovative elder-friendly community planning around the United States, particularly AdvantAge—an initiative to help counties, cities, and towns prepare for the growing number of older adults who are "aging in place," as opposed to moving to retiree-only communities. Everyone from individuals and families to social workers, activists, and city officials will find this a helpful, enlightening resource.

Download or read book Medical Caregiving and Identity in Pennsylvania's Anthracite Region, 1880–2000 written by Karol K. Weaver and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about immigrant traditions, music, food culture, folklore, and other aspects of ethnic identity, little attention has been given to the study of medical culture, until now. In Medical Caregiving and Identity in Pennsylvania’s Anthracite Region, 1880–2000, Karol Weaver employs an impressive range of primary sources, including folk songs, patent medicine advertisements, oral history interviews, ghost stories, and jokes, to show how the men and women of the anthracite coal region crafted their gender and ethnic identities via the medical decisions they made. Weaver examines communities’ relationships with both biomedically trained physicians and informally trained medical caregivers, and how these relationships reflected a sense of “Americanness.” She uses interviews and oral histories to help tell the story of neighborhood healers, midwives, Pennsylvania German powwowers, medical self-help, and the eventual transition to modern-day medicine. Weaver is able to show not only how each of these methods of healing was shaped by its patrons and their backgrounds but also how it helped mold the identities of the new Americans who sought it out.
