Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania at Chickamauga and Chattanooga: Ceremonies at the Dedication of the Monuments Erected by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; To Mark the Position of the Pennsylvania Commands Engaged in the Battles Under date of December 20, 1893, General J. S. Fullerton, Chairman of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commission, addressed a communication to the Chief Executives of such states as were represented by military organizations in the battle of Chickamauga, and the various other engagements in the vicinity of Chattanooga, Tennessee, asking their co-operation in the work of correctly locating the positions of the organizations so engaged. In response to this request, His Excellency, Governor Robert E. Pattison, on the 30th day of April, 1894, appointed a Commission from the survivors of these regiments and batteries to aid in this work on behalf of the State of Pennsylvania. Promptly within two weeks after such appointment, the gentlemen so selected met at Harrisburg for organization and the transaction of other business. The record of this initial meeting which led up to all the important work which has since been done to perpetuate the history of Pennsylvania troops on these fields, is best told in the report of Captain Waltman, recording secretary, which is here inserted in full. The Pennsylvania Delegation to the Chickamauga-Chattanooga Battlefields Commission. An Account of the appointment, organization and proceedings of delegates commissioned by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to act with the United States Commissioners, for the establishment of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, in locating the positions of Pennsylvania troops engaged in the battle of Chickamauga and the battles about Chattanooga, in the year 1863 of the War of the Rebellion. His Excellency, Robert E. Pattison, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, having commissioned ninety-six of the survivors of the Pennsylvania troops engaged in the battle of Chickamauga and the battles about Chattanooga, to act with the United States Commission for the establishment of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park, in locating the positions of the Pennsylvania troops in those engagements, the following list of the persons thus commissioned has been prepared, alphabetically, with rank, organization and present address of each delegate. Book excerpt: Winner of the Laney Book Prize from the Austin Civil War Round Table: “The post-battle coverage is simply unprecedented among prior Chickamauga studies.” —James A. Hessler, award-winning author of Sickles at Gettysburg This third and concluding volume of the magisterial Chickamauga Campaign trilogy, a comprehensive examination of one of the most important and complex military operations of the Civil War, examines the immediate aftermath of the battle with unprecedented clarity and detail. The narrative opens at dawn on Monday, September 21, 1863, with Union commander William S. Rosecrans in Chattanooga and most of the rest of his Federal army in Rossville, Georgia. Confederate commander Braxton Bragg has won the signal victory of his career, but has yet to fully grasp that fact or the fruits of his success. Unfortunately for the South, the three grueling days of combat broke down the Army of Tennessee and a vigorous pursuit was nearly impossible. In addition to carefully examining the decisions made by each army commander and the consequences, Powell sets forth the dreadful costs of the fighting in terms of the human suffering involved. Barren Victory concludes with the most detailed Chickamauga orders of battle (including unit strengths and losses) ever compiled, and a comprehensive bibliography more than a decade in the making. Includes illustrations

Book excerpt: The best way to bring an event from the past into vivid life is to see it through the eyes of someone who lived it. In this book the reader sees the Civil War through the eyes of four Union soldiers who, although they were all from south central Pennsylvania, experienced the war in radically different ways. The journals of the four--Lt. William Glison of the 6th Ohio Infantry, Sergeant Will Duncan of the 2nd Pennsylvania Militia Battalion, John M. Kelly of the 39th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and Private George Schmittle of the 13th Pennsylvania Calvary--give the reader a glimpse into the daily life of the soldier. Written primarily during 1863 and 1864, entries are in each soldier's own words (including idiosyncrasies of grammar and spelling). Commentary is added when necessary to elaborate or clarify as well as to fix each experience on the canvas of the war as a whole. A capsule history and muster roll are included for each company along with an appendix listing all the corps of the Federal army and giving a brief history of each corps' service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When North and South met among the desolate mountains of northwestern Georgia in 1863, they began one of the bloodiest and most decisive campaigns of the Civil War. The climactic Battle of Chickamauga lasted just two days, yet it was nearly as costly as Gettysburg, with casualties among the highest in the war. In this study of the campaign, the first to appear in over thirty years and the most comprehensive account ever written on Chickamauga, Peter Cozzens presents a vivid narrative about an engagement that was crucial to the outcome of the war in the West. Drawing upon a wealth of previously untapped sources, Cozzens offers startling new interpretations that challenge the conventional wisdom on key moments of the battle, such as Rosecrans's fateful order to General Wood and Thomas's historic defense of Horseshoe Ridge. Chickamauga was a battle of missed opportunities, stupendous tactical blunders, and savage fighting by the men in ranks. Cozzens writes movingly of both the heroism and suffering of the common soldiers and of the strengths and tragic flaws of their commanders. Enhanced by the detailed battle maps and original sketches by the noted artist Keith Rocco, this book will appeal to all Civil War enthusiasts and students of military history.
