Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men, Women, and God(s) is a pioneering study of the Arab world's leading feminist and most controversial woman writer, Nawal El Saadawi. Author of plays, memoirs, and such novels as Woman at Point Zero and The Innocence of the Devil, El Saadawi has become well known in the West as well as in the Arab community for her unforgettable female heroes and explosive narratives, which boldly address sexual violence, female circumcision, theology, and other politically charged themes. Her outspoken feminism and critique of patriarchy have also earned her the wrath of repressive forces in the Middle East. Imprisoned in her native Egypt under Sadat, El Saadawi is now among those on the death lists of Islamic religious conservatives. In Men, Women, and God(s) Fedwa Malti-Douglas makes the work of this important but little-understood writer truly accessible. Contending that El Saadawi's texts cannot be read in isolation from their Islamic and Arabic heritage, Malti-Douglas draws upon a deep knowledge of classical and modern Arabic textual traditions—and on extensive conversations with Nawal El Saadawi—to place the writer within her cultural and historical context. With this impassioned and radical exegesis of El Saadawi's prolific output, Malti-Douglas has written a crucial study of one of the most controversial and influential writers of our time. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1995.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why did you get that tattoo? Every tattoo tells a story, whether the ink is meaningful or the result of a misguided decision made at the age of fourteen, representative of the wearer's true self or the accidental consequence of a bender. These most permanent of body adornments are hidden by pants legs and shirt tails, emblazoned on knuckles, or tucked inside mouths. They are battle scars and beauty marks, totems and mementos. Pen & Ink grants us access to the tattoos of writers Cheryl Strayed, Tao Lin, and Roxane Gay; rockers in the bands Korn, Otep, and Five Finger Death Punch; and even a porn star. But it also illuminates the tattoos of the ordinary people living in our midst--from professors to thrift store salespeople, cafe owners to librarians, union organizers to administrators--and their extraordinary lives. Curated and edited by Isaac Fitzgerald, who sports ten tattoos himself, each story features Wendy MacNaughton's stylish full color illustrations of the tattoos on black-and-white drawings of the bearer's body. At its heart, beneath its colorful skin, Pen & Ink is an exploration of the decision to scar one's self with a symbol and a story"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Americans at Home, Vol. 2 of 2: Pen-and-Ink Sketches of American Men, Manners and Institutions The ruin caused by the war is accelerating the change, by compelling many Of the most cultured'and aristo cratic people in the South to enter the lists. This of itself is enough to produce a revolution in Southern feeling. Slavery tended to brand labour with degrada tion these men will help to put upon it the stamp Of nobility. General Lee advised his Officers and men wisely on this point. He foresaw the change that was before the defeated South; he perceived that her best hope was to prepare herself for it without delay; and he accordingly urged his soldiers to cast aside all feel ings Of hostility engendered by the conflict, act as loyal citizens, and apply themselves at once to honest work. He himself, refusing the Offers Of pecuniary assistance made to him by friends on both sides Of the Atlantic, addressed himself to the task Of self - support; and I was told at Richmond that one Of his sons, who held the rank Of major-general in the Confederate army, drove into the city from his farm, a few weeks after the surrender, with a waggon-load Of hay. Examples Of this sort, backed up by the pressure Of external circum stances, can scarcely fail to launch the South upon a new career; and when once the energies that amazed the world during the late war are turned into the channels Of social and political progress, what is there too great to expect of such a people in such a country? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River of Tears is the first ethnography of Brazilian country music, one of the most popular genres in Brazil yet least-known outside it. Beginning in the mid-1980s, commercial musical duos practicing música sertaneja reached beyond their home in Brazil’s central-southern region to become national bestsellers. Rodeo events revolving around country music came to rival soccer matches in attendance. A revival of folkloric rural music called música caipira, heralded as música sertaneja’s ancestor, also took shape. And all the while, large numbers of Brazilians in the central-south were moving to cities, using music to support the claim that their Brazil was first and foremost a rural nation. Since 1998, Alexander Sebastian Dent has analyzed rural music in the state of São Paulo, interviewing and spending time with listeners, musicians, songwriters, journalists, record-company owners, and radio hosts. Dent not only describes the production and reception of this music, he also explains why the genre experienced such tremendous growth as Brazil transitioned from an era of dictatorship to a period of intense neoliberal reform. Dent argues that rural genres reflect a widespread anxiety that change has been too radical and has come too fast. In defining their music as rural, Brazil’s country musicians—whose work circulates largely in cities—are criticizing an increasingly inescapable urban life characterized by suppressed emotions and an inattentiveness to the past. Their performances evoke a river of tears flowing through a landscape of loss—of love, of life in the countryside, and of man’s connections to the natural world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt Illustrated: With Pen and Pencil Very naturally, this series of events did not pass without wide differences of Opinion as to the policy and the justice of the part played by England. The extremes are represented. On the one hand by those who hold that England had no right to go near Egypt at all and on the other by those who think that England ought to take Egypt and govern it in the interest of the natives, as she has done in India. But with all such divergencies of view we have nothing to do here. We allude to the series of events only because it is impossible in any work on Egypt to ignore them. The blood and treasure which England has spent during the last ten years in that ancient land have necessarily deepened the interest felt in it by all thoughtful readers. Deeds of bravery and heroism have not been lacking, whether we deem them to have been done in a righteous cause or not. And this volume, in its new and improved form, will help to make clear to those at home the land and the people on whose behalf they were done.
