Book Synopsis Emperor and Aristocracy in Japan, 1467–1680 by : Lee Butler
Download or read book Emperor and Aristocracy in Japan, 1467–1680 written by Lee Butler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An institution in decline, possessing little power in an age dominated by warriors? Or a still-potent symbol of social and political legitimacy? Emperor and Aristocracy in Japan traces the fate of the imperial Japanese court from its lowest point during the turbulent, century-long sengoku, when the old society, built upon the strength and influence of the court, the priesthood, and a narrow warrior elite, was shaken to its foundations, to the Tokugawa era, when court culture displayed renewed vitality, and tea gatherings, flower arranging, and architecture flourished. In determining how the court managed to persist and survive, Butler looks into contemporary documents, diaries, and letters to reveal the court's internal politics and protocols, hierarchies, finances, and ceremonial observances. Emperor and courtiers adjusted to the prominence of the warrior elite, even as they held on to the ideological advantages bestowed by birth, tradition, and culture. To this historical precedent the new wielders of power paid dutiful homage, ever mindful that ranks and titles, as well as the political blessing of the emperor, were advantageous marks of distinction.
Book Synopsis Japan in Transition by : Marius B. Jansen
Download or read book Japan in Transition written by Marius B. Jansen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book social scientists scrutinize the middle decades of the nineteenth century in Japan. That scrutiny is important and overdue, for the period from the 1850s to the 1880s has usually been treated in terms of politics and foreign relations. Yet those decades were also of pivotal importance in Japan's institutional modernization. As the Japanese entered the world order, they experienced a massive introduction of Western-style organizations. Sweeping reforms, without the class violence or the Utopian appeal of revolution, created the foundation for a modern society. The Meiji Restoration introduced a political transformation, but these chapters address the more gradual social transition. Originally published in 1986. Book Synopsis The End of the Shoguns and the Birth of Modern Japan by : Mark E. Cunningham
Download or read book The End of the Shoguns and the Birth of Modern Japan written by Mark E. Cunningham and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the end of the shoguns pave the way for modern Japan? Between the eighth and twelfth centuries, emperors ruled Japan. But powerful families gained the loyalty of the samurai - the emperors warriors. In 1185 one local lord took control as shogun, leader of the samurai armies. For the next seven hundred years, the emperors were ceremonial figures, and the shoguns ruled Japan, banning interaction with the Western world. In the nineteenth century, Westerners demanded that Japan open to trade under the threat of invasion. Japan s shogunate realized it didn t have the military technology to fight them. When the shogun government made concessions to the Westerners, Japanese lords were outraged and returned their support to the emperor. The shogunate crumbled. In 1868 Emperor Meiji became ruler of Japan. He opened Japan to modern technology, and his military advisers created a global fighting force. The end of the shoguns, which led to the birth of modern Japan, was one of the world s pivotal moments.

Book excerpt: One of the first European-originated histories of Japan to appear in the English language, this remarkable work revealed many of the Asian nation's ancient secrets to the world-many of which have once again been lost in the mists of time and political correctness. The author tells the story of Japan from its earliest recorded time, but focuses in particular on its relations with the outside world and the effects of its interactions with European nations in particular. Among the amazing revelations in this book: -That writing was introduced to Japan from China via Korea, -That the Japanese believed that trade missions from Europe were a precursor to a white invasion and waged an intense race war to halt them, including the promotion of attacks and murders on European explorers and traders, - That only after leading Japanese nobles went to Europe 'under cover' as humble servants to spy on European intentions, was it realized that there was no white plan of conquest, - That the Japanese leadership made a conscious decision to send delegations to the various European nations to select the best of each country's institutions (social, political and economic) to copy and transplant them to Japan, - That the almost overnight transformation of Japanese society from an antiquated rural society into an industrial giant was achieved by copying European technology. - How the Japanese brutally suppressed attempts by Christian missionaries to import Christianity to that nation, - The measures taken by the Japanese nobility to protect the racial homogeneity of their nation and their restrictions on European influence, and - The dramatic story of how superior European warfare technology eventually broke the Japanese isolation and their subsequent embracing of that technology. A fascinating account of Japanese history written from a European perspective.
