Book excerpt: Providing high-quality streaming over peer-to-peer (P2P) systems faces multiple challenges such as limited upload capacity of peers and high heterogeneity of receivers in terms of download bandwidth and screen resolutions. In this thesis, we present the design of a P2P live streaming system that uses scalable video coding (SVC) as well as network coding. The proposed design enables flexible customization of video streams to support heterogeneous receivers, highly utilizes upload bandwidth of peers, and quickly adapts to network and peer dynamics. The proposed design is simple and modular. Therefore, other P2P streaming systems could also benefit from various components of the proposed design to improve their performance. We conduct an extensive quantitative analysis to demonstrate the expected performance gain from the proposed design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have emerged as a promising and cost-effective transport solution for streaming video to a group of users in the Internet. In the P2P architecture, users not only consume video, but also forward it to other users. Thus, P2P systems scale better than client-server systems as users bring resources to the system. The challenge is to achieve low-latency and robust video dissemination by overcoming a number of adversarial aspects and challenges -- peer dynamics, heterogeneous uplink bandwidth of peers, heterogeneous hardware and capabilities of peers, and peer-wise connection restrictions due to NATs/firewalls. This dissertation presents Stanford Peer-to-Peer Multicast (SPPM), a P2P video streaming system. SPPM is designed to achieve low-latency and robust streaming by constructing an overlay of multiple complementary trees and dynamically rearranging the position of peers by Active Overlay Management in a distributed fashion. Next, we extend SPPM for providing playback control to users by time-shifted streaming. To perform time-shifted streaming, peers store past portions of video and forward them to other users when requested, thereby reducing server load. To further alleviate server load, we propose fast prefetching, by which peers can disseminate content quickly. Finally, we present a way to accommodate mobile users. Video transcoding is often required to adapt video for the mobile users. We propose interleaved distributed transcoding (IDT), which allows a video stream to be transcoded at multiple peers that are more capable than mobile users. IDT is shown not only to reduce computation required at a peer but also to achieve higher error resilience in case of peer failure or packet loss.

Book excerpt: The number of users who rely on the Internet to deliver multimedia content has grown significantly in recent years. As this consumer demand grows, so, too, does our dependency on a wireless and streaming infrastructure which delivers videos, podcasts, and other multimedia. Streaming Media with Peer-to-Peer Networks: Wireless Perspectives offers insights into current and future communication technologies for a converged Internet that promises soon to be dominated by multimedia applications, at least in terms of bandwidth consumption. The book will be of interest to industry managers, and will also serve as a valuable resource to students and researchers looking to grasp the dynamic issues surrounding video streaming and wireless network development.

For example, the collective sum of videos would be accounted for 86% of the global traffic by 2016. As the bandwidth requirement rises, the distribution costs will increase and hence an efficient strategy for supporting video distribution is essential. The distribution mechanisms that aim to be scalable, fault-proof, and cost-efficient, like P2P systems, have therefore become very popular. At present, videos of different qualities are available to ensure that various types of end-user terminals can be supported. Layered coding schemes allow the encoding of content into several qualities within a single stream, providing the viewer with the best quality depending on his needs and capabilities. This project aims to study and optimize the intersection between distributed Peer-to-Peer streaming approaches, centralized systems using Content Delivery Networks (CDN), and layered content using Scalable Video Coding. As a result, we propose a complete system that merges the three technologies and takes benefit from all its advantages. We propose a network organization with low delay and incentives to contribute, defining also an algorithm to reconstruct precedent network topologies and reducing the time to find good peers. A new mechanism has been designed in order to select the scalable layers to download according to the bandwidth available, with more stability and precision than other existing proposals. Finally, we defined the policies of the content to store in the Content Delivery Network, being firsts at taking advantages of both the layered content and the Peer-to-Peer network.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is the scalable extension of H.264/AVC which extends spatial, temporal and quality scalability on the H.264 video stream. In this thesis, a fast priority index (PID) assignment algorithm is first developed for the MGS (Medium Grain Scalability) packets in SVC. We formulate the index assignment problem as the quantization of the rate-distortion (R-D) slopes of MGS packets, and use the Lloyd-Max algorithm to find the optimal solution. The slope quantization index of a packet is used as its PID. The complexity of our method is much lower than existing method. The quantization-based PIDs facilitate the comparisons of packets from different video streams. Video multiplexing results show that the overall PSNR can be improved up to 1 dB. A fair Peer-to-Peer (P2P) scalable video streaming scheme is also proposed in this thesis. To improve the quality fairness of multiple video streams, we modify our fast PID assignment method where the base-layer quality is also embedded in the Supplemental Enhancement Information (SEI) message of the SVC bit stream, in addition to the quantized rate-distortion slope of each MGS packet. To build a fair "contribute-and-reward" mechanism for P2P video streaming, we propose a multi-hierarchical topology that is based on peers{u2019} uploading bandwidth. Finally, we combine these two parts to build a SVC-based P2P network, which fully utilizes the quality scalability of SVC, and the end-user quality is determined by its uploading bandwidth contribution. We also propose a caching mechanism for SVC video streaming in the P2P network based on the instant supply and demand estimation. We generalize the previous work from the literature into the SVC case and get the estimation formulation of the supply and demand in SVC video streaming on P2P network. We found that SVC video streaming can further reduce the normalized traffic load from the server compared with AVC video streaming in the same caching strategy set-up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's multimedia systems, clients are getting quite heterogeneous in terms of connection bandwidth, processing power, and display resolution. Scalable video coding techniques can support this heterogeneity by enabling us to encode a video stream once and extract/decode it in several ways according to receiver's capabilities. We study secure and efficient delivery of scalable streams. First, we propose an authentication scheme for end-to-end secure delivery of scalable video streams, which supports their full flexibility: it enables verification of any possible substream extracted from the original stream. Then, we consider streaming of scalable videos over peer-to-peer networks, and study efficient management of seed servers resources in these networks. We prove the hardness of optimally allocating these servers and propose two approximation algorithms to solve it. We evaluate both our security and resource allocation solutions and show their efficiency analytically and through simulations.
