It was developed for use with students with diverse academic needs, including English language learners. Although other programs emphasize peer-to-peer learning strategies that can be utilized in classrooms, this report focuses on "Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies" because of its possible usefulness with students with diverse academic needs, including English language learners with learning disabilities. One study of "Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies" for English language learners met the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards. The study included 132 Spanish-speaking English language learners from grades 3-6 in South Texas. The WWC considers the extent of evidence for "Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies" to be small for reading achievement. No studies that met WWC standards with or without reservations addressed math achievement or English language development. Book excerpt: "Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies" and a similar program known as "Peer-Assisted Literacy Strategies" are peer-tutoring programs that supplement the primary reading curriculum (Fuchs, Fuchs, Kazdan, & Allen, 1999; Mathes & Babyak, 2001). This review uses the acronym "PALS" to encompass both programs and their respective full names when referring to a specific program. Students in "PALS" classrooms work in pairs on reading activities intended to improve reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Students in the pairs--who alternately take on the role of tutor and tutee--read aloud, listen to their partner read, and provide feedback during various structured activities. Teachers train students to use the following learning strategies: passage reading with partners, paragraph "shrinking" (or describing the main idea), and prediction relay (predicting what is likely to happen next in the passage). "PALS" includes separate versions for kindergarten and grade 1. "Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies" also includes versions for grades 2-3 (which are part of a larger set produced for grades 2-6). Forty-five studies reviewed by the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) investigated the effects of "PALS" on beginning readers. Two studies (McMaster, Fuchs, Fuchs, & Compton, 2005; Stein, Berends, Fuchs, McMaster, Saenz, Yen, & Compton, 2008) are randomized controlled trials that meet WWC evidence standards. One study (Mathes & Babyak, 2001) is a randomized controlled trial that meets WWC evidence standards with reservations. These three studies are summarized in this report. The remaining 42 studies do not meet either WWC eligibility screens or evidence standards. Appended are: (1) Research details for McMaster et al. (2005); (2) Research details for Stein et al. Book excerpt: English language learners are students with a primary language other than English who have a limited range of speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills in English. English language learners also include students identified and determined by their school as having limited English proficiency and a language other than English spoken in the home. This review focuses on programs to improve the English language literacy and/or academic achievement of elementary school students who are English language learners. For a program to be included, the majority of instruction has to be conducted in English (approximately 80%) but teachers might occasionally provide some native language support. The review focuses on programs for English language learners in grades K-6. It also includes studies in which students may no longer be considered to have limited English proficiency by their school but still have limited English language skills. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) looked at 73 studies of 32 programs that qualified for review. Of these, 16 studies of 12 programs met WWC's evidence standards--8 without reservations, and 8 with reservations. Twenty programs reviewed had no studies meeting WWC evidence screens, three of which were eligible for inclusion in this topic review but did not have studies. Additionally, 20 studies could not be categorized by an intervention and are not cited in the report. (The initial identification of eligible programs, practices, and studies ended in March 2006.) The review focused on three outcome domains: reading achievement, mathematics achievement, and English language development. In looking at the three outcome domains for the 12 interventions, the following produced potentially positive effects on reading achievement and English language development: (1) Bilingual Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition; (2) Instructional Conversations and Literature Logs; and (3) Vocabulary Improvement Program. Eight other programs and practices had potentially positive effects in one domain. One program had no discernible effects in two domains. (Contains 2 tables, 2 figures, and 1 footnote.) Book excerpt: Currently, many states are adopting the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or are revising their own state standards in ways that reflect the NGSS. For students and schools, the implementation of any science standards rests with teachers. For those teachers, an evolving understanding about how best to teach science represents a significant transition in the way science is currently taught in most classrooms and it will require most science teachers to change how they teach. That change will require learning opportunities for teachers that reinforce and expand their knowledge of the major ideas and concepts in science, their familiarity with a range of instructional strategies, and the skills to implement those strategies in the classroom. Providing these kinds of learning opportunities in turn will require profound changes to current approaches to supporting teachers' learning across their careers, from their initial training to continuing professional development. A teacher's capability to improve students' scientific understanding is heavily influenced by the school and district in which they work, the community in which the school is located, and the larger professional communities to which they belong. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact and effect of PALS among a group of kindergarten and first grade students. Subjects consisted of 20 kindergarten and first grade students who had been identified by the school district as eligible for special education services or at-risk with academic concerns using the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. Assessment tools were used to identify and target intervention needs. The results indicated that PALS was effective as a tier II supplementary intervention for all kindergarten students at-risk and some students with disabilities. PALS was not equally as effective with first grade students.
